but somewhere along the line I've lost sound there used to be a little Icon at bottom of screen that I could mute or have sound on but thats dissapeared ever since I had to deleat everything off puter and then did the recovery thing To get the Volume icon back in your system tray: Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio devices; this will open up a window with some sound settings. Click the check box that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar." then click OK. You should now see the little speaker thingy by the time again.

How do I put little icons into the bar at the bottom of the screen. On the old pc I had Excel and Word icons at the bottom and could just click. Can't seem to do it on this laptop. Also where do I get the Google BBM thingy from again Cy?

How do I put little icons into the bar at the bottom of the screen. On the old pc I had Excel and Word icons at the bottom and could just click. Can't seem to do it on this laptop. Do you mean putting them in the quick launch (by the Start button and next to all the rectangles of your open programs)? First, make sure you have the quick launch toolbar showing by right clicking on an empty area down there and go up to Toolbars and make sure Quick Launch has a check mark by it. If it does not have a check mark, click it and that will make it have one, and you should then see it appear by the start button with probably the "show desktop" and IE icons. Right click near one of them and click open folder. Ok now that the folder is open, leave it there for now. Go to start > programs > microsoft office and then right click on your Word icon and click Copy with left button. Now go to the folder that is open and right click and then left click click Paste. Repeat for each program you want there. Close the folder when done. Also where do I get the Google BBM thingy from again Cy?I don't like any other now Google BBM thingy? Not sure what you mean by that. But if you're talking about the Google Toolbar, it's here: toolbar.google.comand also do you still have the Bloody Spikeless anchor? hmmm yeah you know I keep everything; I just have to find it. Ahh here we go: pages.suddenlink.net/cyrus7/dittoanchor.gifI hate this laptop. I've got a stupid woman with a big gob on the desktop. She has to go. alllllrighty.

Thanks bunches Cy, now I'll just have to give all that a whirl. Hope I can do it. I'm missing my Brokeback Mountain blue search Google page with a pic of Jack/Ennis that automatically opened when I clicked the big 'E' for Explorer on the desktop and it also opened if I clicked the little 'house' on the Explorer toolbar. You gave me the link ages ago saying I'd like it and I do. I really miss it. Ohhhhh I gotcha ... hmm lemme see if I can find it... ah ha! here you go: www.awesomestart.com/brokebackmountain/To set it as your homepage, go to the link, then in your IE menu click on Tools > Internet Options > click the button that says Use Current > click OK. Close and reopen IE and you should have it!

Cy, can you tell me why...on Explorer the history doesn't show up? That address bar at the top, if I click the down arrow at the side, it shows some previous addresses, but they're from ages ago.

Go to Tools > Internet Options and tell me how many days it says to save History for.
Also, are you on dial-up or a broadband internet connection? I ask because if you are on a high-speed connection, you could enable Remote Assistance and I could actually see and control your pc.

Takes me ages to do anything, waiting for web pages to load and waiting for the little bar at the bottom to get all the way across....

*sigh* Go to this site: www.speedtest.net and when it loads and you see the little yellow spinning pyramid, click on it and it will run an internet speed test to see what your internet download and upload speeds are. Then paste the link to the pic here. To past the pic here, after the speed test finishes it will come up with a box with the results and to the left is 3 links you could copy. Do the one that says "Forum link (for most forums)" and just paste it in the message window here. Like mine:

Looks like you're probably subscribed to a package that has a maximum download speed of 1 Mb and maximum upload speed of 256Kb (0.25Mb). As for good or bad... kinda depends on how much you're paying for it. I'd not want a connection that slow at my house but that's cuz I like it fast. The speed I'm subscribed to is a maximum 9Mb download and 1Mb upload. Translation: my subscribed download speed is 9x faster than yours, and my subscribed upload speed is 4x faster than yours. Technically, they can call yours high-speed though, as it is way faster than dial-up. Looking at your test results, you do have a high latency time though. Compare yours and mine. That's a number that lower is better. If you're actually subscribed to a package that is supposed to be faster than 1Mb down / 256Kb up, you should be complaining to your ISP. Oh, and the speed test I posted in this thread was run from work, which is why it shows my download speed at like 30Mb. The one in my LJ was run from home. I just ran a test at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ from work and have: Download Speed: 33477 kbps (4184.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 12548 kbps (1568.5 KB/sec transfer rate) So that's about 33Mb download, 12.5Mb upload. W00t!!!

It doesn't feel faster than dial-up. I used that for years and was okay with it, but this is driving me crazy. I can feel my blood pressure rising...

The speed test you ran has you downloading at about 1Mb, so if it really seems that much slower than dial-up, you could have a pc issue. Is it slow doing everything, or just internet stuff?
