Nothing much to report yet, apart from the word being that Drew Goddard and Steve DeKnight are writing this ep (as posted at Drew's site).

Casting sides are out but I haven't had time to read them yet. So here is a summary from Clairel at ASSBCasting sides for 5.13
This seems like a really strange episode. I'm going to just summarize very briefly and leave out a lot of details. There are many, many roles being cast. Two are for vampires, one is for a WWII-era Nazi soldier named Heinrich, and the others are for WWII-era American navy men.
Somehow Angel and Spike have ended up on a WWII-era German submarine which is crewed by Americans except for the one Nazi, Heinrich. Angel and Spike seem like their present-day selves, so it's as if the sub has gone through a time warp or has been frozen in time somehow.
The two new vampire characters, a Russian vampire from the early 20th century named Nostroyev (he says he was Rasputin's lover), and an ancient ugly vampire (like the Master or Kakistos) named The Prince of Lies, are on the sub because the Nazis were collecting vampires to do experiments on them, cut into their brains, and control the vampires minds so that they could have an invincible vampire army. When Spike and Angel hear this they conclude this is why they are there--because the Nazis were trying to get the vampires with the baddest reps. Angel tries to intimidate Nostroyev and the Prince of Lies by introducing himself as Angelus. They've heard of Angelus and are somewhat impressed.
There is a lot of talk among Angel, Spike, and the two other vampires about how they mustn't kill the human crew because only the humans know how to pilot the submarine. Nostroyev, the Prince of Lies, and for some reason Spike seem quite bloodthirsty and eager to kill all the humans. (I figure Spike is playing along with the other two in order to seem more impressive to them. Angel gives the other vamps pragmatic reasons for keeping the humans alive--he doesn't want the others to catch on that he's really a good guy.) At one point Spike claims it'll be easy to steer the sub, and he pushes some buttons at random, causing alarms to go off.
Most of the sides take place on the submarine, but there's one short scene of an American from the sub, named Lawson, showing up in Angel's office. The bit of conversation is enigmatic and hard to make heads or tails of. There is also a short scene of Wesley looking at books and papers in his office, and finding Fred bound and gagged, tied to a chair.
Angel and Spike (maybe just Angel) end up dusting one or two of the other vampires. When the American Navy men see Angel fight, they think he's a superhero like Captain America.

Tensai at Spoiler Slayer has also done a sides summary: www.spoilerslayer.com/archives/002559.phpATS: Episode 13 Info
Just as I was about to call it a night, news started coming in about Episode 13. I'll give them credit, for a show that supposedly was going to have a hard time doing flashback episodes, they're certainly going all out. Due to time constraints, I'm not going to have time to do a full detailed rundown tonight. However, I'll hit the highlights below and update it with full details tomorrow. Angel: Episode 13
The episode features an extended flashback to the days of World War II. It opens on a German U-Boat, where a mainly American crew is being attacked by unknown creatures (my guess is that the American's have just captured the sub).
In the present day, Wesley walks in on a bound and gagged Fred, while Angel receives an unexpected visitor in his penthouse. An older gentleman, Lawson, who features prominently in the flashback as well. Back to the past, and Lawson and the remaining crew have holed up in a forward compartment. They hear ominous noises on the exterior of the hull, and discover Angel has worked his way into the torpedo tubes. They release him and together they eventually regain control of the ship. (although I'm not clear on this, I seem to get the impression that Angel is working for the United States government during the war).
This is mainly done by Angel negotiating with who is now in control of the sub. Which would be Spike, and two other vampires (Nostroyev and The Prince Of Lies). Angel convinces Spike and the others not to kill the remaining humans, as they are the only ones who can pilot the sub. It appears that all of the vampires, including Angel, were captured by the Germans and imprisoned on the sub. One of the Nazi soldiers is still around, Heinrich, though he is not forthcoming with information.
While the crew is trying to get the sub to land, The Prince Of Lies discovers what the Germans were up to. He tries to kill Heinrich, but Angel stakes him. (The American's are a bit in awe of Angel, likening him to Captain America). Spike discovers that the Prince had discovered what the Germans intended to do. Essentially, a twisted version of The Initiative's plans, to implant devices in vampires brains to control them. Which gets even more interesting when it's insinuated that the United States has similar ideas about vampire soldiers.
Last bit has the sub under depth charge attack from several destroyers.
Haven't had the time to digest all the info, but I think this give an overall view of what's going to happen. Definitely not a time-travel story, which means that we will be seeing the old pre-soul and pre-chip Spike. Angel is more intriguing, as it goes quite a bit against the accepted canon for his souled years before Buffy. This is the vampire who didn't care about anyone in the 50's, but he's apparently working for the United States government and being quite the champion during World War II.
Oh, I'm not sure about this being flashbacks.... although I haven't read them yet so I can't say anything about the tone and feel of the info. Angel and Spike are supposed not to have seen each other for a majorly long time before School Hard, are they?! I mean, what evidence has there been for them being together since 1900?! Angel was going through lots of shit in the 20th century, and it has never been hinted before that they ran into each inbetween (and this would be more than running into...). Tensai himself says as much. Oh look, and rather than me go over it again, here is what Clairel says later in the thread linked in the previous post: Before someone suggests this really could have happened to Angel and Bad Spike in the 1940s, I wanted to explain the reasons I think Spike and Angel are their present-day selves:
(1) Lawson, an American from the sub, visits Angel's office in the present;
(2) The Americans on the sub comment on Angel's strange haircut, which I figure is his present-day haircut, since he was probably a conformist in the 1940s and would have had a normal 1940s haircut back then;
(3) If Spike and Angel had met on this submarine in the 1940s they would have remembered it, but I always thought they never met between 1900 China and 1997 Sunnydale;
(4) When Spike and Angel hear from Heinrich about the Nazis'experiments to control vampires' minds by cutting into their brain, there is specific mention of Spike's angry reaction. I took that to mean he was thinking about his bad experience with the Initiative, and so it must be present-day Spike, not 1940s Spike.

Okay, I have read the suckers now and can I just WTF?! It's a mind fuck, and no mistake. But basically it is the Initiative in jackboots and boys and their toys, lots of gay imagery, and confuzzlement. But the impression I got from reading the sides was that we are seeing flashbacks afterall! These Rasputin shaggin' embryonic Nazi vampires have given me a nasty headache...

Some more sides have come out and guess what.... my crack about the Inititative was actually not a joke! A character called Petrie heads it up... Doug Petrie anyone?! These guys are either deliberately spoofing us or have been smokin' waaaaay too much of the good stuff lately! Anyway, the new sides involving the Initiative explain how Angel is involved in all the aforementioned shenanigans in the first place. He was sitting gently brooding in his New York apartment in 1943, paying no attention to world politics and war, when these guys burst in, tooled up with crossbow and threats. Doug... er, Commander Petrie tells him about the German sub taken over by Americans (being naive in nautical methods of warfare, is this feasible? I mean, did this kinda thing happen? How do you get rid of the original crew and take over an enemy sub? Well, maybe when it isn't voyaging I suppose.... ). Anyway, they then received a distress call from the sub sounding like they were being attacked, but they need that sub and also want to save their men. Conventional methods would take too long, besides which they think Angel is the man for the job..... They have been watching him, apparently..... Angel doesn't want to get involved but he is told he has no choice - if they tie enough weight to him he’ll sink whether he wants to or not. Petrie reckons Angel can help because of the sub's cargo *dun dun duuuunnnn* He hands Angel some documents about the cargo.... So, we are def in flashback heaven afterall. It has been suggested elsewhere that maybe they came up with this idea when James was meant to be off in Italy, living under the Fascists in WWII... maybe to do with having his hair done differently for the movie.... and then when it didn't happen they thought hey, let's go with it anyway. Coz it's FUN! Do you know, I wouldn't be at all surprised

Okay, Tensai has revised his summary of the sides and put things in good order. As I couldn't be bothered to wrestle with it, I'm grateful!
Angel: Episode 13
The teaser opens on the Atlantic Ocean, in the year 1943. A German U-boat is silently cruising on the surface. We have flashed back to World War II, as the crew of the sub (members of the United States Navy), are under attack by something in the sub with them. They radio desperately for help, as their crewmates including the captain, are killed.
(gap)
In the present, Fred is talking to a man named Lawson. He says he's an old friend of Angel's, but Fred has never heard of him. Lawson explains that there's a lot about Angel she doesn't know, and we flashback to...
Angel's apartment - 1943, in New York City. It's a dump, and the post-Soul/pre-Buffy Angel is staring glumly at the wall. Suddenly, the door is kicked in by two members of The Initiative (that's what they call them). After a short skirmish, Angel is held at bay with a stake and crossbow. Into the apartment strolls Commander Petrie.
(gap)
Petrie asks if Angel is up on the events in the war. Essentially, they are losing the battle with the German U-Boats. A few days ago, an American team captures one of the new-generation U-Boats that are causing the most damage. However, they received a distress call and haven't heard from them since. Since it's so deep, no human can get down there. This is why they need Angel. Since Petrie is the head of the 'Government Research Initiative', this is why they've been keeping tabs on him. They know he is souled and feels that he would be a perfect solution. Angel isn't interested, until Petrie reminds him that he doesn't have a choice. To further convince him, Petrie shows him some documents that detail what was on the sub.
Back on the submarine, Lawson, Spinelli, and the other crew members are holed up in the forward compartments. A German, named Heinreich, is tied up in a corner. Lawson is bragging that if they can bring the submarine back to America, they'll be famous. The others are a bit doubtful, as they are not in control of the sub and have a limited air supply.
They hear screaming from the other side of the bulkhead. It's the other members of the prize crew being slaughtered and Lawson wants to go out and rescue them. This forces Spinelli to pull a gun to stop him and the schnitzel is about to hit the fan when they hear a loud thud... on the outside of the hull. The sounds is something moving along the hull and towards the torpedo room.
When they arrive, they hear whatever it is knocking on the door to the torpedo tube. The knocking is morse code, and Lawson convinces the others to open it. Out pops a very wet Angel.
Meanwhile, back in the present. Wesley walks into his office to discover a bound and bruised Fred in a chair.
(gap)
Angel has just finished giving marching orders to the remaining crew. He's impressed that they are ready to follow him. The first thing, they need to get the manacles chained to Angel's feet.
Two of the crew, while getting a pair of bolt cutters, are impressed by Angel's strength. They liken him to Captain America. In the interim, Lawson fills Angel in on the remaining members of the crew.
(gap)
Angel has hooked up with Spike and two other vamps on the other side of the bulkhead. Spike is glad that Angel is there, figuring that the Germans were going after the worst vampires on the planet. Angel asks to be introduced to the others. Spike introduces Nostroyev and The Prince Of Lies to Angel. He introduces him as Angelus. Both vampires are impressed, although Nostroyev tries to one-up him with his past deeds. Bragging about his reputation, and the fact that he was Rasputin's boyfriend. Angel acts like he has never heard of him (and maybe he hasn't). Spike jumps in, explaining that he freed the others after he got loose. He explains that if he knew that Angel was imprisoned in the forward compartments, he would have freed him too. Then again, they were pretty busy killing sailors.
Spike explains that they've killed them all. They are all ready to go forward and kill the rest, but Angel talks them out of it. His logic is if they kill all the men, who will get the submarine to port. Spike figures they can do it, setting off an alarm while trying to demonstrate how easy it would be. Nostroyev figures that they can kill all but one of them. Angel tries to stop him from going forward, and when Nostroyev begins arguing, Angel dusts him. Spike and The Prince grudgingly agree not to kill the humans.
(gap)
Back in the present, Angel is going over research in his penthouse. He looks up and discovers that Lawson (a much older version), has managed to get into the building. Lawson seems impressed at how far Angel has come over the past several decades. Angel recalls that he was going to kill Lawson the next time he saw him, Lawson laughs it off and says that he's there to talk.
Back in 1943, Angel tells the others to stick tight and stay sharp as they exit the forward bulkheads. The enter the control room and discover Spike and The Prince. Angel introduces them and tells Lawson if he needs their help, he has it. Lawson and his men start getting the ship under way. Spike is goofing around, playing at being the captain. Lawson and Angel go to the engine room, where Angel asks what next. Lawson reminds Angel that he's supposed to be in control, and lets slip that he knows Angel isn't working for the Navy. Angel tries to explain, but Lawson seems fine with this fact.
(gap)
Everyone is in the control room, trying to control the sub with the few men they have. Spike is not pleased to be left out of the action. Something causes Angel and Lawson to go elsewhere, where they discover that the Prince is attacking Heinreich in the galley. The Prince has been going through some documents and is enraged at their contents. Angel tries to pull him off Heinreich, to no avail. Right as he's going to kill the German, Angel stakes him.
Heinreich mutters thanks, to which Angel hits him and knocks him out. Some of the others are shocked at the fact that the Prince 'dusted'. Lawson and Angel are trying to figure out why The Prince went mad, at which point Spike enters with more documents.
Later, the three of them begin to interrogate Heinreich. They are playing good vamp/bad vamp, with Spike in the role of bad Vamp. Heinreich is cowed a bit by seeing vamp-face Spike, but in German says that Spike could never understand. Lawson, who can speak a bit of German, asks Heinreich about the papers. He still doesn't want to talk, until Lawson explains that they can't stop Spike from killing him.
Heinreich spills, talking about the Nazi's plans to control vampires by operating on their brains. Spike realizes that this why the Prince was trying to kill the German. Heinreich reveals that they were less than a year away from commanding an undead army. Spike figures that they went for the best to start with. Lawson is disgusted at the depths that the Reich will stoop to, which causes Heinreich to chuckle. The Germans aren't the only ones with that idea, looking over at Angel. Lawson is shocked to realize that Heinreich could be telling the truth.
(gap)
Later, Spike is burning the documents, when suddenly a loud explosion rocks the ship. They are under depth charge attack from several destroyers. They begin to maneuver to avoid the attacks.

Apparently there are yet more sides out, although I haven't had my hands on 'em yet, casting for a "Mr Fury". Now come on, are these guys taking the piss or what?! This whole set of sides might be an eloborate ruse to throw us spoiler whores off the scent, and Joss, Drew and Steve are sitting smoking in their office, rolling round in their chairs, laughing their sorry butts off at us for falling for it.... When they have another exciting episode of life in the typing pool coming up, in reality.

Seems we have more info on this episode than you can shake a stick at.... Filmjerk.com article on Ep. 13 www.filmjerk.com/nuke/article721.html<br>
In a forthcoming episode of “Angel,” written by Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard, the title hero encounters an old foe that he fought alongside with in World War II. Flashing back between 1943 and the present day, the season’s (lucky) thirteenth episode – which will begin filming December 9 – reveals that Angel was once cajoled into fighting for the U.S. on a German U-Boat, trying to contain a Nazi plans to control vampires by brainwashing them.
Four days before filming is set to begin, producers are still looking for an actor to portray Nostroyev, described in casting documents as a mid-40s strapping vampire that has a Russian or Slavic accent. A revised casting call was sent out yesterday to the agents of actors for the role.
According to casting sides FilmJerk.com has obtained, the episode begins with a German U-boat cruising on the Atlantic Ocean’s surface, circa 1943. There, the members of the United States Navy crewing the sub are attacked by a vampire in the sub with them. As they radio for help, a number of the crew is killed, including the captain.
After shifting briefly to the current day, viewers are once again brought back to 1943, this time to New York City, where Angel is roused in his sparse apartment by a Commander Petrie, who asks him if he’s been up on the news of the war. When Angel admits he has not, Petrie quotes Plato, telling him that “ignorance is the root and stem of all evil.” Petrie needs him to contain a problem on the U-Boat, telling him is the only one who can rise to the occasion. In fact, he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. For those looking for a full break-out of occurs later in this episode, including how Spike plays into the 1943 conflict and how Angel is pressed briefly back into service, head over to SpoilerSlayer.com.
The episode will be directed by Terrence O’Hara.

COPYRIGHT
™ and © 2003-2004 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved. Watch Angel on The WB on Wednesdays, at 9pm
A World War II submarine sailor — the only man Angel ever turned into a vampire since regaining his soul — returns to seek his revenge.
On a captured German submarine in 1943, U.S. Captain Franklin sounds an alarm, radios for help, and orders one of his sailors, Lawson, to usher another group of men out of the control room to a forward compartment. As Lawson obliges, Franklin’s bloody body flies back at him, and an unseen monster wrestles him for it until another man finally pulls Lawson to safety and secures a hatch cover against the monster. In the present, after Angel and his friends conclude a late-night meeting at Wolfram and Hart, Lawson steps out of an elevator, looking just as he did 60 years earlier. Then he goes to Fred’s lab, where his presence, even though he says he’s an “old acquaintance” of Angel’s, makes her nervous. Back in 1943, several men break into Angel’s apartment, ask if he’s ever considered joining the war effort, and tell him about a recently captured German U-boat where something has gone very wrong. Angel asks why they’re talking to him, and they show him a list of the sub’s cargo. A bit later, aboard the submarine, Lawson and the surviving crew hear a knocking on the hull. The sound moves to the torpedo tubes, and when they investigate, they find Angel in one of the tubes. Back in the present Wesley finds Fred tied to a chair in his office, but before he can react, Lawson grabs him, too. Back on the submarine the sailors grab Angel, but he wins their trust by reciting an official security code. Lawson tells Angel that he and the few others are the only survivors of some sort of monster attack, so Angel — against Lawson’s advice — approaches the control room hatch, which opens to reveal the monster: Spike.
Spike greets Angel, explains that the Germans have been capturing the most notorious vampires, and introduces Angel to the two others aboard: Nostroyev and the Prince of Lies, whom Spike freed after first freeing himself. Spike tries to enlist Angel in killing the remaining humans, but Angel stops him, noting that they’ll be trapped underwater unless the remaining sailors get the submarine going again. Nostroyev objects and pushes Angel aside, but Angel dusts him with an axe handle, convincing Spike and the Prince of Lies to be quiet. Back in the present Lawson surprises Angel in his penthouse, but to Lawson’s surprise, Angel reacts coolly. Back on the submarine Angel brings Lawson and the crew into the control room, where they survey the carnage and sit down at the controls. Spike and the Prince of Lies hover while Angel and Lawson remove the dead bodies. When they finish, Lawson asks why Angel is letting Spike and the Prince live, but Angel says the most important thing is to get the sub moving again so they can all get home. In the present Lawson notes the irony of Angel’s promise and Angel, sensing danger, knocks Lawson down and plunges a stake at his heart, reminding Lawson that he said he’d kill him if he ever saw him again. Lawson catches Angel’s hand, saying he has something to show him. Then Lawson takes Angel to his office, revealing Wes, Gunn, and Fred bound, gagged, and strung from the ceiling on piano-wire nooses, their toes tipping precariously on chairs. As Angel reacts, Lawson assures him they’ll get through this “safe and sound.”
Angel asks what Lawson wants, and Lawson says he’s already getting it: fear in Angel’s eyes. Back on the submarine the men work to get the sub going again while Angel continues to discourage Spike from eating them. Just then, however, there’s a scream from the galley, and Angel and Lawson find the Prince of Lies attacking Heinrich, one of the original German crew. Angel dusts the Prince, which shocks the other men, and Angel is forced to admit to Lawson that the Prince was a vampire. Lawson asks what set off his rage, and Spike enters with some documents detailing the Germans’ plans for the captured ghouls. He confronts Heinrich, who admits the Germans are experimenting on vampire brains, looking for a way to control them… and says the Americans are doing the same thing. Spike turns on Lawson, who insists it’s not true, and Angel orders Spike to burn the documents, which he does. As the papers flame up, however, a depth charge booms just outside. Lawson and Angel rush back to the control room, where they learn that four destroyers are firing at them. Lawson orders a fast dive, but the boat is rocked by more explosions which knock out the lights and the propulsion motor. On Angel’s orders, Lawson runs to the engine room while Angel helps the other crew members fix leaks by crushing broken pipes with his bare hands. As they finish, however, and the depth charges fade away, they realize that Heinrich has escaped. We see him sneak up on Lawson in the engine room and stab him with a screwdriver. Back in the present Lawson tells Angel what it feels like to die. As the flashback continues, Angel finds Lawson, who’s near death, and asks for instructions to get the sub going again. Lawson insists that he’s the only one who can do it, and Angel realizes he’s right… so he vamps and sinks his teeth into Lawson’s neck, then opens a vein and forces Lawson to drink.
Angel returns to the control room, where the remaining crew are near death from lack of oxygen. Then the power comes back on as Lawson gets the engines going, and the crew begins to revive. Angel goes to the engine room and thanks Lawson as the ship begins to surface. Then Lawson says he’s hungry, vamps, and attacks Angel, who dodges easily. A few minutes later the sub surfaces, and Angel, telling Lawson there are eight hours until daylight, sends him off the boat, saying if he ever sees Lawson again, he’ll kill him. Back in the present Angel explains to Lawson that he, too, left the sub before it reached shore, and says he didn’t really want to condemn Lawson to life as a vampire. Lawson insists that taking the lives of Angel’s friends would be a fair exchange, and that the thought of causing Angel pain has been his reason to “live” all these years. Lawson asks if all of Angel’s victims feel the same pain he has, but Angel swears Lawson is the only vampire he’s sired since regaining his soul. Finally Lawson attacks Angel, and as they crash through a door, Lawson grabs a piece of wood to use as a stake. Angel grabs his hand and slowly turns the stake toward Lawson, who finally allows Angel to thrust it home, dusting him. Later, as Angel tells Spike what happened, Spike notes that Lawson must have known Angel would kill him… and Angel agrees.

By rights no, he shouldn't be bleached. They should find him/make him another wig! And he shouldn't have the duster either... but they'll probably stick a great long trench coat on him If and when promo pics emerge, you know where they'll be (and I post when and what I have updated in the Main Site section of the board)

Do you think they'll have him in a Nazi uniform that could be quite cute. I think I'd like his hair to be like it was when he was down the mine with Angelus in Fool for Love. I thought he was gorgeous in that clip.

It was a bit but I put it down to you being dazzled by the thought of Spike in shiny boots.... Uniforms do nothing good for me, so I am hoping he will be in fairly normal garb, but anything so long as it's not a long coat. I think Lindsay agrees with me too.... he seemed quite taken with the idea of Spke having somewhere to hang up his coat...

Some promo pics (none of Spike ) from mediasharx.com/index.php/news/817Lawson is not at ALL how I imagined him.... phwoar! Oh dear, Twistie may be about to get her wish afterall. And if she does I will write my first ever complaining email to the WB! Folks are jumpy about the promo for next week - we can swallow the spin that says the vampire captives are forced to help the Nazis. The spoilers haven't been saying that, just that they were kidnapped and experimented on. And that it is Angel who is forced to help the Americans... anyhoo, apparently in the teeny flash you see, Spike looks to be in a black button down shirt and short jacket, with a Nazi/SS/whatever armband on and that they have blacked up his hair and it is NOT NICE! Also, very balck eyebrows. I shall wait to see the promo for myself before I begin to vomit.

Here's the pictures I took of Spike on the last night. Sorry for the lack of quality, but pics of the telly never turn out well. Plus, Spike was only on for like a fraction of a second, which makes it difficult to get a pic! Since I took these pictures, the usual applies... don't post them anywhere without permission... though I don't know why you'd want to! WW2 Spike1WW2 Spike2Cy, I have amended so we just have the links. They were taking a long time to download. Don't think he looks too bad, actually! - PK
