Apparently Smallville is known for playing with Superman canon so how the Dox/Fine = Brainiac stuff will actually manifest is something we'll just have to wait for.

Poor old Kristen *snerk* From aliciajo: Smallville? How f--king fantastic is it that James Marsters is going to be on the show?
Unf--kingbelievably fantastic! James plays Milton Fine, a college professor with an alter-ego named Brainiac, who any Seth Cohen-like comic geek knows is one of Superman's first major superhumanoid enemies. I'm hearing that Brainiac is going to make the rift between Clark and Lex much worse.
From bluejoe: What is up with the WB lying about James?! What happened?
'Tis the question of the day, it seems. Here's what happened: On Wednesday, I asked the publicist for Smallville if James was joining the cast. Her response: "Huge guest star coming up on the show, but not him. You'll find out at TCA." So, as many of you saw in my column on Friday morning, I wrote that according to the WB, he was not joining the show. That very same day, Tom Welling made a surprise appearance to announce Smallville's new guest star: James Marsters. The WB rep apologized (points for that) and said her boss told her to lie to keep the information from leaking. I'd tell you how I really feel about the whole thing but will take the high road instead and say what the WB should have: no comment.
From ginamarie: Are you boycotting scoop on James? Wouldn't blame you if you do.
Thought about it, but my overwhelming love for James has won out, especially after receiving a perfectly timed delivery of chocolate-chip cookies from James fans this morning. (Thanks, guys.) Watch With Kristen

JAMES MARSTERS
"Buffy" role: Spike, the devilish vampire with hidden nobility.
New role: Brainiac, an advanced robot from another world, next season on WB's "Smallville."
Similarities: Brainy and Spike love the dark side.
Differences: Spike turned good, while Brainy will definitely be evil. Knox News

The new SFX mag missed out on the news of James joining the show... as they lurve himn so much, it'll be interesting to see if they change their tune a little in the next issue, when rating Smallville. Fine/Dox/Brainiac will sure be that old school villain shaking things up ;D

How silly re the hair JAMES MARSTERS 'Buffy' Role As Buffy's foe-friend, Spike sacrificed himself to help save the world from a legion of vampires. New Role As villain-college professor Brainiac, Marsters sacrifices his blond locks to help Smallville in its new time slot. 'Buffy' Likeness Marsters is at his best when he's nefarious, but we gotta remove a stake for losing the oddly appealing dye job. [4 stakes] Entertainment Weekly

They are all more popular in the US than they are here, though. The new US Guide has a wee piece about James joining Smallville, with a comic pic of Braniac (in his green guise) alongside a pic of Spike, and the following: Have to agree about the smart and deadly bit, but where have these people been - their obsession with James' Spike hair seems to have made them blank out of their minds his year of buzz cut (and it's not like they never knew about it - this mag carried pics of JM in The Mountain and Cool Money, for instance).

I've now watched all of two S4 Smallville's... but I've really enjoyed them both. I love the lush production values, and Lex and his dad are terrific. I like Chloe well enough too, and Lois is great - annoying ina good way (lol, yes, that's possible), nosy, feisty, and can take care of herself.
Today's episode interestingly featured a girl called Abby Fine.. and her psycho mad-scientist doctor mother... will they turn out to be any relation to the Professor, shortly to become Brainiac/Dox? Probably not, but it got my attention ;D
I'll certainly keep tuning in to get up to speed - for the Brits, it's on every day on E4, more than once.

It's very well produced, isn't it Deb. I think I only missed it before because of the weird times C4 air it. At least with E4 you keep on running into it!

The Smallville bits from James' chat with Kristin: Picking James' Brain: In case you've been living under a rock and James' fans don't yet have your mailing address, you should know that James Marsters has been cast as Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) new nemesis on Smallville in the coming season. His name? Brainiac, which is quite fitting for the man I still contend to be one of the smartest in Hollywood, a man who throws around words like verisimilitude. That said, it seems best to not let my nonsensical blathering get in the way of his words and just give it to you straight up Q&A style.
You know the fans are flipping out about you being on Smallville, right?
Yeah, and holy crap! It's so cool. I mean, I'm very excited about Smallville. God, I had the best dinner with [executive producer] Al Gough, and granted, he was trying to seduce me into signing a contract with him, but I was struck with how normal he was, how down-to-earth and how much we talked about our families, and then about art. He was interesting on a number of subjects, and I think he's got a good mind. I like his brain with the Superman mythology. You know, [Smallville] is a coming-of-age drama again, like Buffy, and those are fabulous, because we're all coming of age constantly. I'm always trying to grow up, so you know, that story never gets old for anybody. "Become yourself." When are you not gonna need to hear that? And so, I love that.
You're gonna have a completely different look than we've seen on Buffy. A tan, darker hair, no British accent. Do you ever slip back into the accent?
No. When I first got the role, I did all the time, but I don't, no. I'm so happy just to be brown-headed James, like, 'Oh, hi!' I hope people like my American accent.
Now, your character is a college professor named Dr. Fine who transforms into Brainiac, right? So, are you starting off as Dr. Fine? Will we see that transformation? You're gonna see it very early, and that's all I know. I think I'm gonna start as something almost unrecognizable and become Dr. Fine. You'll see me in the very first episode.
Do you know how many episodes you'll do?
I'm contracted for six to 10, so I hope it's 10. If I suck, it'll be six. I guess if I really suck, it'll be one. Like, "Wow, he died in the first episode?!"
Doubt that! Smallville's now on Thursdays at 8 p.m., up against Joey, Survivor and Alias. They need you.
Wow. It is? That's gonna be interesting. [Deep, Terminator-esque voice.] Oh, we will smash them, Survivor with their weak story plot points. We will smash them with fiction. We will cream them with metaphor. Verisimilitude, my junky bottom. [Laughs.] We're creating an immaculate reality that beats reality any day.
[Scratches head and reaches for dictionary.] Thanks, James! Watch With Kristin

On the WB's Smallville page they have what could be seen as spoilers to some, so I shall just bring the James/Fine bit and you can go look at the rest if so inclined The arrival of DC Comic villain Milton Fine, aka Brainiac (James Marsters, Angel), exacerbates the situation between Clark and Lex. Fine recruits Clark to be his research assistant and provides him with top-secret information about Lex's immoral Luthorcorp experiments. His arrival on Earth was no accident. Fine was born out of the spaceship that landed after the meteor shower. Who sent him and why proves to be a life-altering revelation for Clark as he finally learns why he was sent to Earth and what happened to his biological parents and home planet.
