/archives/005319.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com//archives/005319.htmlThank you, WB, for Spike-ing your fall schedule! James Marsters is back, ladies and gentlemen -- well, mostly ladies, from what I can glean from your e-mails.
Marsters as SpikeAt some point last week, I began receiving a number of requests as to whether the actor formerly known as "Buffy's" boy toy Spike would be showing up on the tube again soon.
Well, about two hours ago, Tom Welling (a.k.a. young Clark Kent) sauntered before us to settle those rumors. Marsters is joining the cast of "Smallville" next season as professor Milton Fine, whom comic book geeks know as Brainiac, one of Superman's greatest foes. He has committed to a number of episodes, according to the accompanying press release. The series premieres at 8 p.m. September 29, and no, Marsters isn't bringing that sexy British accent with him.
For all you "Buffy" fanatics keeping track, that means Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Seth Green (Oz), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), David Boreanaz (Angel) and Marsters all have a regular presence on your television screen this fall.
Marsters' casting may be sweetest of all, since it brings him back to the network that launched him to fame. And frankly, The WB can use his help. It's no secret that the network formerly known as The Frog did not enjoy its best season in 2004-2005.
This year, The WB wants to reclaim its cool by any means necessary, using strategic hires as a start. Marsters' return was only one of several surprising casting announcements. Welling also revealed that Tom Wopat would be joining the cast, reuniting him with his "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star John Schneider, who plays Clark's dad.
Then Welling added that this year, "Smallville" is digging deeper into the comic book's lore by having Clark explore the Fortress of Solitude and meet the lamest superhero ever, Aquaman. That Welling, he's a talkative guy.

Prepare to be even more excited, the slash fiends amongst us... although we know they mean figuratively rather than literally Smallville Has Marsters And More
James Marsters, best known as the blond, British vampire Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, will be making a guest appearance in the upcoming season of Smallville, the WB network announced. At the Television Critics Press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., Smallville star Tom Welling announced that Marsters would be playing a character from the original DC comic-book series. "Joining us this season will be another famous character from Superman lore, Milton Fine, also known as Brainiac," Welling told critics. "Brainiac, the ultimate villain, will be played by someone you are very familiar with, James Marsters of Angel, but this time without the British accent and the blond hair, which I'm kind of sad about, but we'll see."
In an interview with SCI FI Wire, executive producer Al Gough said that he and the other writers had been wanting to introduce the character for a while, and always had Marsters in mind for the role. "We always thought he was fantastic in Buffy and then in Angel, and he just felt like he'd be a good fit for this character," he said. "He was always sort of the first guy we wanted, and we met with him and told him the arc for what we wanted for Milton Fine as Brainiac."
Brainiac will be introduced as a college professor who tries to turn Clark against humanity, according to Gough. "He's a wonderful actor beyond being Spike, so I think he'll bring all of that to the role," he said. "We've talked about it, and what's nice is, he's going to be one of Clark's college professors. ... It's more of the grand seduction of Clark Kent rather than someone coming in and them throwing each other around. And I think James is really up for the challenge." <snip> Sci-fi WireThat gives me a warm fuzzy feeling

heh Richard just IMed me... [20:07:33] Richard: spike went ot smallville [20:07:41] Cyrus: no he didn't [20:07:47] Cyrus: James Marsters went to Smallville [20:08:03] Richard: In other news, my wife just began drooling - In a bit of news that bodes well for the morass of tedium SMALLVILLE was threatening to become last season, James "Spike" Marsters will be joining the cast this year as the show's riff on Braniac. No word yet on whether he'll be green or sporting those funny little head dots, but I'll bet dollars to 12th-level-intelligences that the writers find some way to get him into leather pants before his stint is over. At any rate, at least he'll be on a better show than poor David Boreanaz over on BONES… [20:08:45] Cyrus: yeah ok... where'd you get that? I already know of course, but wondering where that paragraph came from [20:09:03] Richard: www.cinescape.com[20:09:15] Cyrus: ok [20:09:36] Richard: you already knew huh [20:09:42] Cyrus: duh [20:09:58] Richard: didn't know you was privy to that kind of info [20:10:04] Cyrus: yeah of course ;D ok I hunted down the actual link at cinescape here in the middle of the page... scroll down a bunch lol dang if I can get the url tags right

Ouch, poor David. And why would they try to make JM wear leather pants? Methinks they are getting their Jossverse vamps mixed up. Brainiac in leather pants? That'd be .... interesting ;D

For those over Steve H announcing that James is playing Agent Dox, Vril Dox is another of Brainiac's names (why is he so goddamn complicated, lol!). And at some point Vril Dox had a son, unsurprisingly named Vril Dox II, who is as baaaad as he was, apparently!! ;D
