NN brought this, I'm just moving for her. Dragonball the Movie ! Twentieth Century Fox is finally moving forward with a live-action adaptation of the hugely popular manga "Dragonball," casting the stars of the movie and setting a release date of next summer.
Justin Chatwin is starring as the hero while James Marsters will play the villain in the sci-fi adventure, which will be directed by James Wong. The movie has been penciled in for a worldwide release date of Aug. 15, 2008. Stephen Chow, the filmmaker behind "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer," is producing.
"Dragonball" is one of the most successful Japanese cultural exports of all time. The manga, created by Akira Toriyama and published by Tokyo's Jump Comics, was adapted into graphic novels, video games and a phenomenally successful television series that ran in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. "Dragonball's" popularity also generated more than $4 billion in merchandising sales. In North America, the property achieved the zenith of its popularity under the name "Dragonball Z."
The story follows an adult humanoid alien named Goku, who discovers that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.
Chatwin, who will play Goku, has already begun training under the auspices of stunt performance company 87Eleven, which has executed and designed action pieces in pictures such as "The Matrix," "The Bourne Supremacy," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and "300." Marsters is playing the villainous Piccolo.

It hasn't been confirmed on JM's site yet, but I've had lots of google alerts for it. Will a Spike pop the Dragonball? Date : November 14, 2007 Writer : Clint Morris
James Marsters, best known as the bad-guy/good-guy ‘Spike’ on “Buffy” and “Angel”, is about to sink his teeth into what could be his cinematic big break.
The American – yes, he’s American; does a great British accent though doesn’t he? – actor will play the villain in Twentieth Century Fox’s hefty-budgeted “Dragonball” movie.
It’s quite the score for Marsters, whose last film was a direct-to-dvd offering called “Shadow Money” and before that, fronted a telemovie titled “Cool Money”. “Dragonball”, based on the video game of the same name, will have about ten times more money – and likely, ten times the audience – of the small-screen efforts. But in the last year, there’s been a bit of heat around Marsters – he played the recurring role of Braniac on hit “Smallville”, and won a supporting role in the new Hilary Swank/Gerard Butler comedy “P.S, I Love You”. There’s currently talk that his “Buffy” colleague Joss Whedon might be looking to reunite with him on the new series “Dollhouse” featuring Eliz Dushku. I know Marsters’ manager has been pushing him big the last couple of years too – seemingly knowing his client was a golden goose ready to be snapped up – so not surprising that he has climbed the pole in recent months.
As The Hollywood Reporter reminds us, "Dragonball" is one of the most successful Japanese cultural exports of all time.
Justin Chatwin, last seen in David Goyer’s so-so “The Invisible”, will play Goku. Marsters is playing the bad guy Piccolo.
The film will be captained by James Wong, an “X-Files” vet whose since gone on to be quite the popular genre filmmaker, having helmed “Final Destination” and “The One”. He’s currently attached to direct the supernatural thriller “The Watch”.

DBZ's Goku, Piccolo Picked Marsters and Chatwin to play duo. by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK UK, November 14, 2007 - Two major bits of Dragon Ball Z casting news for you - the roles of Goku and Piccolo have been cast.
According to Variety, Justin Chatwin will play Goku, the powerful warrior who protects the earth from endless hordes of evil creatures hell-bent on dominating the universe and harnessing the power of the titular, mystically powered orbs.
The villainous demon king Piccolo will be played by James Marsters, who made his name playing peroxide-blond bloodsucker Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Chatwin doesn't have a huge amount on his CV - he had a small role in War of the Worlds and has also popped up in Lost and Smallville.
Apparently, he has already been training with 87Eleven, the stunt performance company behind the action sequences in The Matrix, 300 and The Bourne Supremacy.
Since the end of Buffy meanwhile, Marsters has been playing Professor Milton Fine in Smallville, and will also appear in the rom-com P.S., I Love You with Hilary Swank. IGN

It's certainly generated an enormous amount of interest, hasn't it. I'm kinda perplexed, never having really heard of it before, but it seems to be huge!

Hee, the mind boggles doesn't it M. Mind you, Brainiac was green and bald in the comics and JM so wasn't. Okay, I'm posting this one as they are excited about James 'DRAGONBALL' TO STAR CHATWIN AND MARSTERS The former 'BUFFY' actor will play the villain Piccolo (natch) while Chatwin plays Goku

LOCATION: Wherever fine dragonballs are sold
THE SKINNY: There’s casting, and then there’s Casting. This piece of news qualifies under the latter category:
Twentieth Century Fox is going forward with its live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga series DRAGONBALL, which spawned the hit series DRAGONBALL Z. The movie will be directed by James Wong, who did KUNG FU HUSTLE and SHAOLIN SOCCER.
But that’s not the best news. No, the best part is that James Marsters, best known for his portrayal of evil-vamp-turned-good guy Spike on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, will be playing the villainous Piccolo. (What did you expect, it’s a Japanese character. It could’ve been worse, after all – he could’ve been named Oboe.) Justin Chatwin, who played the older brother in the Spielberg version of WAR OF THE WORLDS, will play Goku. He’s got the hair for it already – it just needs to be gelled up into spikes.
The movie will begin production later this year (which, at this point, probably means “December”), and it’ll be out next summer. Let the dragonballs roll!

Spiking the Dragon Ball punch: I'm no fan of Dragon Ball Z. I love the concept but the actual story has just a few too many of the quirks that annoy me about shounen manga. However, the live-action Dragon Ball movie certainly has my attention now that they've cast James Marsters as Piccolo. Hm, if they put Marsters in green make-up, what do you think the chances are that he'll become the male equivalent of the Orion Green Girl? After Elton

He was so wanting to talk about this but he is banned by Steve. ;D So he told us about his son's reaction instead. I hope they don't paint him green. They didn't for Brainiac did they? So hopefully they won't.

By now most people who care will know that a big budget, Hollywood Dragonball movie is on its way, but details have been sketchy in coming though. However, a local tourism chief in the city of Durango, Mexico recently spilled the beans that the cameras would start to roll on January 7th and that most of the production will take place at soundstages and locations in his home town.
The movie will be directed by James Wong, veteran of the Jet Li vehicle The One and a couple of Final Destination movies. Better still, veritable God Among Men Stephen Chow will be overseeing things as producer, and not a mere executive producer either. On the starring side of things, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cult hero James Marsters is on board as Piccolo, and Justin Chatwin, Tom Cruise's grumpy son from War of the Worlds, will be Goku.
A more recent addition to the cast is Jamie Chung, a veteran of MTV's The Real World, who'll appear as Goku's love interest Chi Chi. The final note on casting thus far is that Mexican "it girl" and actress/model Camila Sodi has auditioned for the role of Bulma.
While story details are sketchy thus far, rumour has it that the movie will loosely follow the anime's "King Piccolo Saga", the penultimate chapter of the original Dragon Ball anime. At the moment, the United States release is slated for August 15th, 2008. DVDFeed

Dragonball Set Pics and a Word From James Marsters
Most fans assumed that Stephen Chow, writer and director of the surprisingly entertaining Kung Fu Hustle, had bitten off more than he could chew when he announced that he was producing a live-action adaptation of the popular Dragon Ball manga.
However, with direction by James Wong (The One, Final Destination 3) and the added star power of award-winning actor Chow Yun Fat (The Killer, Hard Boiled), the still-in-production film has many disbelievers raising an eyebrow.
It’s not surprising that fans were skeptical when even the actors involved with the project were trepidatious. James Marsters (“Spike” on Buffy and Angel), who plays the evil warrior Piccolo, posted this comment on his Website, JamesMarsters.com:
“I'm not really allowed to talk about any of the movie details, but I can say that James Wong is obviously a gifted and insightful director! When I got the role I had doubts. The more I live with it I realize that I am going to rock this harder than I have anything in my life – I’m hungry for it.”
