I think a lot of it had to do with this con being a smaller con, and some people decided to do NYCC instead.
Mid-Ohio - LAST PART - Other things I remembered and Sunday
Things I forgot:
Saturday - James was surprised to see me back a second time for autographs. I told him I had a lot of time to make up for and James had a little laugh from that.
Evening Event - James really didn't comment on the scenes he wasn't in. It seemed like he was watching them for the first time himself. Also he described the diet he's on (I think it's called AGS), where it's 500 Calories a day and no starches at all.
Sunday
My youngest brother and I arrived way TOO EARLY (7:45AM). I'm too used to DragonCon and lining up that early. My youngest brother didn't want to hang around, so he went to the food court downstairs because it had a
set. Sorry, I couldn't get 2 more fans. Crystal from JMF was the next to arrive, guitar in hand about 9:10AM. About 10:15AM Wizard World divided the line into 2 lines: James VIP and everyone else. My youngest brother showed up with my second photos from Saturday, and he was going back to the dealer room. The VIP's were let in about 10:40AM and I got a front row seat almost in front of James. This wasn't a good idea as James sat behind the table (for once!) and had the microphone in front of his face.
Q&A Highlights (because I don't remember it all)
- I went first (got a shout-out from James) and asked about his favorite shows on PBS and what he thought of Congress cutting it's funding. He said he liked the question and the "you're going to get me in a little bit of trouble" with the answer. He likes Frontine and Nova and the short answers Congress hates PBS for exposing the Iran-Contra Affair on Frontline and basically not liking the idea of an educated America.
- Crystal went next with her plug for GOTR and
Murphy's Law, and the request for "Moonshot."
Video HereI've got to say, for being off-the-cuff James knocked it out of the park. WOW! But then he made Crystal a challenge that she would have to play "Smile" for us next year.
- I think this where his wife called up and he took her phone call (he called her "Sweetie" and "honey"). He said he was at a talkback and doing well and he'd call her back after the panel.
The rest is kind of fuzzy, but here are some things I didn't know:
- James is a member of the Green Party.
- His character in the Utah project is a villain who goes after people in love and kills them.
- In
Metal Hurlant he has a love scene with an 18 year old and that's why he's getting in shape. I think he'll have a shirtless scene in that.
- His son and his 2 younger brothers are huge
Doctor Who fans and his favorite Doctor was Eccleston, and his son's was Tennant.
- He had to audition a bunch of times for
Caprica and how in between takes he'd go off and pray.
- He'd work with anyone from the
Smallville or
Torchwood sets in a heartbeat.
- the Japanese character for
Vampire Empire is based off a character from
Powerpuff Girls and that his wife helps him with the audiobooks.
Other things I remember:
- the usual John Barrowman and "Once More with Feeling" questions
- a couple of shout-outs to people in the audience (
Example Here)
- other video questions
Here and
Here- someone had the nerve to ask for a hug which James declined saying it's too good for him and leads him down a bad road.
The rest I'll probably remember later.
Next should have been photos, but they were delayed as somebody thought it was funny to steal all of Froggy's memory cards for the day. That ended up delaying them 30 minutes, so James went to sign for a little bit before Froggy got him. While doing the photos, James peeked through the slit in the curtains and saw me and waved. I waved back. James came up with the "homage to Elvis" at the shoot and I went to the main room to get my last autograph.
After the photos James and Mark took a quick break and came back to signing a little later. Mark started taking down named for dedications and I commented he looked familiar and I asked if he'd done
. Mark answered "Yes" but he's into a different business now. I got my last autograph and I complimented him on the "Moonshot" performance and we talked about Ghost of the Robot. I asked if there'd be new merchandise/photos/etc. to which James said, "Yes, we got 2 new members, my son and Micah." I told him I might be able to swing a couple of stops (I've got relatives in L. A. & San Francisco). I think we talked a little about his son's new band (Disguise Her) and I've got to say James just glows when he talks about his son. I then started walking away when I realized I still had his present so I had to go back and give it to him.
I went looking for my youngest brother, but the last autograph he needed, the guy wasn't showing up until 2PM so I waited with
GraySunrise and
RavenU. I noticed while waiting the person ahead of me in the photo line had her picture already, so I went to get mine. My youngest brother done, I said my goodbyes to
GraySunrise and
RavenU. On the way out James and Mark were coming back from a break so I politely stopped them in the aisle, wished James a safe flight and good luck with his new projects. James gave me a last handshake, and a "Thank you for coming," and went back to signing.
