Frankly, I was sceptical about the real possibility of Angel movies, promised when the WB declined to renew the show. But who knows, maybe the Saving Angel campaign made them a stronger possibility.... mediasharx.com/index.php/news/1795 Fri, 23 April 2004 13:20:55 First ANGEL Movie May Hit in September By Marcus Ferrell |
Scooper 'Daybill' returned with some news from the ANGEL front:
The WB is working on a new stand-alone telemovie, ANGEL, to air tentatively in September. The first two-hour pic is going to essentially launch the series as a sequence of films - different villain, different storyline, each one.
The first is going to tie-in with the events of the series final episode. The season ender is going to go out with a huge cliffhanger, and we'll have to wait till September to find out how it all ends.
Eliza Dushku is in talks to appear in the telemovies, as Faith, the vampire slayer. Her series TRU CALLING isn't going to be picked up for a second season, so I assume she jumped at it.
There's no titles for these Angel films yet, but all six - bi-monthly over a period of a year - will be something like ANGEL: OUTLAWED, or ANGEL: DOMINION. You get the pic.
What's interesting is, Joss Whedon's not going to have much to do with the first couple. He's apparently doing a movie for Universal. Wonder how that's going to go down with fans?
I guess that big truck - which i again saw last week driving around - did something to save this show.
How valid is this report? Well, Daybill hasn't failed us before, but September seems like too quick a turnaround for a movie, although not altogether impossible. It's possible that the first could be filmed after a short break, but I would think that the principal cast would want to get away from these characters for a while.
The finale Daybill speaks of also lines up with an April 17 report from our friends over at Spoiler Slayer, where they said that the series will likely end on a cliffhanger.
Joss Whedon's lack of involvement - I wouldn't be surprised. The movie Daybill speaks of is, of course, the film version of FIREFLY, which is being fasttracked at Universal. However, if these movies go forward, I have no doubt that some of the ANGEL/Mutant Enemy regulars will return.
Updated: The boys and girls over at Whedonesque had a good point that contradicts the report (that I, I'm ashamed to say, didn't think of) - some places have already reported that TRU CALLING will be picked up for another season, even though networks seem to like to mess with executive producers' minds and tell them they're being renewed when they haven't been. Regardless, remember that this report is a rumor. Take nothing as absolute fact until you hear it from the Frog. Still sceptical, but hopeful inspite of everything...

Whedon: Angel Telefilms Unsure
Joss Whedon, co-creator of The WB's vampire series Angel, discounted the network's reported plans to spin off a series of movies next year based on the show, which ends its five-year run on May 19. "The rumored movies are so far just rumors," Whedon said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles. "There are no definite plans to do anything with Angel besides finish out the season as well and as hard as we can."
Whedon is currently prepping to direct Serenity, a feature film based on his canceled Fox series Firefly. "I started Buffy [the Vampire Slayer] partially because nobody would hire me as a director," he said, tongue in cheek. "I thought, 'I'll create a show, and I'll hire me.' So after eight years of what I consider to be publicly broadcast film school, I'm finally making a film."
For her part, Angel co-star Amy Acker (Fred) said she'd be willing to return for any movie projects. "I heard that they wanted to do it, and then I heard it may not happen," she said. "But ask Joss and then tell me, and tell him to do ones that are all about me," she said with a laugh. Acker added that last month's final day of shooting on the show "was very sad. It was actually an all-night shoot in the rain, so it was very sad. It leaves it pretty open. I mean, some things really come to an end, but ... I think you'll be happy with the ending." " rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2004-05/05/11.00. Star Relieved At Angel's End
David Boreanaz, star of The WB's Angel, told CNN Headline News that he's relieved that the show is finally coming to an end after five seasons, and that there would have to be a good reason for him to put Angel's black trenchcoat back on for the reported Angel movies-of-the-week under consideration for next year. "There's been talk about films, board games—let me see—video games," Boreanaz told the news network. "Everything, across the board. These characters that [executive producer] Joss [Whedon] has created will live forever."
Angel is ending May 19, though reports have suggested that The WB may be considering one or more movies to extend the show's story next year. But, Boreanaz said, "I think whenever they want to revisit that character and bring it to a higher plateau, I would only be interested if the bar was [raised] a lot higher."Well, so what?! We can have a series of Spike and Illyria movies. Or a mini-series.. yeah, I like that idea.

Censorship for US , not here. Spike becomes British poet laureate, and doesn't even bother with Angel in the title.

bugger.nu posted a load of bollocks yesterday about NBC taking on "Angel" but no-one believed it! Anyhoo, here's a smidge about the possibility of Spikecentric movies ;D Kinda ties in with what James has been saying on his Euro tour (maybe we'll get more out of him on Saturday) Making sense of the Angel rumours Posted on Wed, 12-May-2004
According to Aint it Cool, news about "Angel" moving to NBC might have been a bit premature. The site contacted an anonymous source who shed some light on the situation. “I wish it were true, but it's a steaming pile of BS. The sets have been struck, the writers are on new shows, etc. Joss is very focused on SERENITY which starts shooting in three weeks.”
There is good news though. James Marsters recently told reporters that that he could be spraying the hair white again for a ‘Spike’ Spin-off. We heard from a reliable source overnight who backed up this one.
“It’s about the only thing that’s likely to happen at this stage. Marsters is pretty keen to keep on being Spike. You can’t blame, it’s a cool character. They’re looking at shaping the telemovies around him, only because Boreanaz isn’t that interested, not because Spike’s the more appealing option.”
According to ‘Tabasco’, the telemovie might happen before the end of the year – but not as early as September as previously rumoured. “Best case scenario for everyone: telemovies go off, Spike gets a series. Whedon’s taking a break at the moment though, so don’t expect anything official for a couple of months”.
Meanwhile, J.August Richards [‘Gunn’] is testing for a plum role movie role, according to his official site. www.moviehole.net/news/3648.html

So, is James delusional? Has he been heasring disembodied voice of Joss? JM seemed pretty confident there'd be something Spikecentric on screen in the future when he was doing his grand tour. The Furious One pfft's such a notion in an interview in "Dreamwatch", and what he has to say runs contrary to what so many Spike lovers, or even just Spike non-haters would think. I think the man has Spike envy, because his missus loves the character, lol. 'Ever since the WB announced that AtS's 5th season would be the end for the show, there has been speculation that Team Angel's adventures will continue in a movie. Sadly, both Bell and Fury are quick to dismiss such reports. "I've heard rumours, but that's all they are to me," states Bell. "In the meantime, everyone's looking for work."
"I believe the rumours are very false and it is my understanding there is no AtS movie in the mix," adds Fury. "Joss is busy doing the Firefly movie and he will have no interest in doing an AtS movie for some time."
Fury also notes that there are no real developments concerning other BtVS spin-offs. "Eliza Dushku is starring in Tru Calling so a Faith series is not happening. As much as everyone loves Spike, I'm not sure anyone feels the character can carry his own show. I know a lot of fans feel differently, but he really makes a great supporting character or a co-lead. Is it possible? Absolutely, but Joss has a lot of other ideas too.I might agree about a spin-off series, but two or three movies revolving round the character could really have fun with his past, his development to where we left him on AtS, and his future.

i would of liked to have seen a spike series but i'm just going to wait for official word on everything now because there is no point in getting your hopes up when people who work on the show have no idea either

WB Wants Angel Movie
Garth Ancier, chairman of The WB network, confirmed to SCI FI Wire that the network has approached Angel creator Joss Whedon about doing a telefilm version of the canceled television series, about a vampire with a soul. "[We] have an offer on the table to Joss to do movies," Ancier said during the network's fall press preview in Los Angeles. "When Joss and David Boreanaz are both interested in doing it at the same time, I'm sure we will be doing Angel movies. Certainly Joss would like to. David will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it."
Ancier later attributed the cancellation of the series, which ended a five-year run on The WB last May, to pressure from producer 20th Century Fox Television for a quick answer as to the show's renewal. "They had pushed for an early decision on whether the show should come back or not," Ancier said. "Had they not pushed for the early renewal, or, conversely, if we had said, 'You know what? Let's wait till we get to the scheduling room in May and decide then,' ... the show may or may not have been back. But I think we would have had that opportunity to discuss it. I think the mistake that was made is that between us and 20th, we didn't wait until May. We just made the decision early based upon their request." Oh so it's 20th/Joss' fault for wanting to know early so they could fit their plot lines accordingly?!

Well I wasn't real sure which thread to put it in, because it mentioned both the possiblity of movies, as well as the cancellation, so I figured news... ah well! It don't matter where it ended up.

Thats not how I took the statement. I could be wrong, but I think they have serioulsy backpedalled with their attitude of "We dont need Angel or Joss Whedon" since the fans and ratings proved they did in deed need JW and us. It also looks to me like they are kind of sucking up to JW to ensure he doesnt take his bat and ball home and move to another network with anyother project including possible a Angel movie. I think WB are being as two faced as usual and I really hope if JW does decide on a movie or any future spin off then he finds another backer and tells WB to shove their network where the sun doesnt shine. They've screwed him and the fans far to often
