The Lifetime Movie Network has picked a darkly compelling subject for its first original miniseries: the story of the Green River serial killer who preyed on women in the Seattle area in the 1980s and '90s.
"The Capture of the Green River Killer," airing Sunday and Monday (8 p.m. EDT), stars Tom Cavanagh (``Ed'') as Dave Reichert, the police detective (later sheriff, and now congressman) who became obsessed with cracking the case.
Reichert detailed the saga in his book, "Chasing the Devil,'' on which the miniseries is based. The drama tracks an unhappy teenager, Helen, played by Amy Davidson, as her fate becomes intertwined with the killer who targets runaways and prostitutes.
Meanwhile, Reichert is following every lead and trying every approach, including a heart-to-heart with convicted serial killer Ted Bundy (James Marsters, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer''). Reichert slogs through turf battles, public criticism and false confessions.
The investigation took nearly 20 years but finally pinpointed the man who was linked by DNA and fiber evidence to the crimes and confessed to taking the lives of 48 women.
When trucking company worker Gary Ridgway pleaded guilty in 2003, he became the nation's deadliest convicted serial killer. He avoided the death penalty by offering to help investigators locate victims' remains that had been missing for two decades.

Tom Cavanagh played a sweet man known for his romantic gestures in the now-gone romantic comedy "Ed." He plays a very different character in Lifetime's miniseries "The Capture of the Green River Killer."
Cavanagh play the dedicated detective, Dave Reichert, who spent two decades tracking down the notorious killer while others mocked him and gave up the hunt. From the early 1980s to the late 1990s, four dozen prostitutes in the Seattle area either went missing or were found dead along the Green River. The small sheriff department in that area set up a task force, with Reichert leading the group, to search for the killer. While the number of victims grew, the leads and clues didn't.
As the investigation plodded into a new decade, Reichert's boss and the FBI constantly downplayed his evidence and conclusions and eventually disbanded the task force. Reichert, however, stayed at it long enough to see the killer sentenced to prison in 2001.
"The Green River Killer" matches Reichert's story with that of a victim's. Amy Davidson ("8 Simple Rules") plays a girl who grows up with an alcoholic mother and the abusive men whom Mom keeps bringing home. Eventually, the daughter moves into prostitution, and it's her voice that Reichert hears as he keeps on the killer's trail. Davidson, like Cavanagh, turns in a believable performance, but Sharon Lawrence as the abusive mother is a disappointment. Mom is an alcoholic who believes she's competing with her daughter for men, so it's not a sympathetic character, but Lawrence misses the mark in capturing the pathetic woman.
"The Green River Killer" airs at 8 p.m. Sunday and MondayNCTimes

• If anybody's planning another Ted Bundy movie, James Marsters' ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") brief but mesmerizing portrayal of the late serial murderer in "The Capture of the Green River Killer" (7 tonight and Monday, Lifetime Movie Network) would make a great audition tape.
Alas, the Lifetime Movie Network's first miniseries visits Bundy for mere minutes in its two-part exploration of the murders of 48 young women that spooked Seattle in the '80s and '90s.
Tom Cavanaugh ("Ed"), who's irresistible in comic roles, is mostly uninteresting as the Washington state detective who cracked the case. The story, stretched out over four long hours, feels slow - and if you can't figure out what the deal is with the young narrator, Helen (Amy Davidson), in the first 10 minutes, you're not paying attention. Perhaps it's just as well that I don't bother watching most of this stuff, just dutifully bring my google alerts and YT subs updates, then. I can cope with stuff like that in its context (ie the whole movie) but in clips, not so much.
There will be some more airings for this on LMN, this month:
April 10 8 pm - midnight EDT April 11 12 noon - 4 pm EDT
