James Returns to the Stage
James Marsters will return to his roots and first love in the San Francisco production of the hit play "The Little Dog Laughed" fresh from its Broadway run. James will appear in the production in a limited engagement starting June 13, 2007 and running through September 9, 2007 (he will continue to appear at his previously announced convention appearances as well). The production will take place at the Post Street Theatre in the heart of San Francisco. Ticket details to follow shortly.
"The Little Dog Laughed" by Douglas Carter Beane is a witty, biting look at what could happen if one of Hollywood's hottest leading men decided to come out of the closet! James will play the leading male character of 'Mitchell'.
James is incredibly excited about the opportunity to return to the stage. Joining him will be Julie White who originally created the role of 'Diane' both off-Broadway and on Broadway. The production will be directed by Scott Ellis.
Squee! ;D ;D

Here's a take on the play, from NYTheatre.comThe Little Dog Laughed is about a rising movie star named Mitchell [James's role ;D] who is poised to star in his breakthrough role if: (a) his agent can secure the rights to the play in which this role appears; (b) his agent can manipulate the author of that play to change it from a love story between two men to a love story between a man and a woman; and (c) Mitchell himself doesn't accidentally "out" himself by taking things too far with the young man he thinks he might be falling in love with.
The superficial themes of this satire by Douglas Carter Beane feel timely, or at least timely-ish: the notion that a gay love story could never be made in Hollywood has been debunked by Brokeback Mountain, although the question of whether it could be made without obviously heterosexual leading men (which is raised in Little Dog) remains very much open; and certainly the issue of whether an "out" gay actor could become a major movie star in America is worth exploring. But you'll notice that I've dubbed these themes superficial because that's precisely what they are: The Little Dog Laughed gets most of its fuel from its central character, who is not Mitchell the gay movie star but Diane the lesbian über-agent (and the fact that she's lesbian is almost entirely incidental, except to remind us of the depth of her apparent self-loathing). In other words, what's mostly being satirized in this play is the soulless, egocentric, power-hungry, anything-for-a-deal mentality that characterizes much of America's corporate climate and that we associate particularly with Hollywood (and always have: it's been 60 years or more since Fred Allen said "If you took all the sincerity in Hollywood and put it in the navel of a fruit fly, you'd still have room for three caraway seeds and a producer's heart.")

Oh BU**er and many more swear words "The Little Dog Laughed" Update:
The play "The Little Dog Laughed" that James was to have starred in this summer has been permanently cancelled. The financial backers have decided to pull out at the last minute. We are all extremely disappointed with this turn of events. James is disappointed of course, but fine - he knows there will be many other opportunities on the horizon for him. We appreciate all the excitement and support many of you have expressed at the prospect of seeing James on stage.
Thank you.good job we didn't book any thing then Ditto
