DVD Review: Shadow Puppets Jolene Blalock ("Star Trek: Enterprise"), James Marsters ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer," "Angel") and Tony Todd ("Candyman") star in this creepy chiller about a group of strangers who awaken in a locked asylum ward with no idea of who they are or how they got there. Several actors with good genre credentials find themselves without memories and locked in an underground facility with a shadow monster chasing them and hungry for blood. It doesn’t exactly tread any new ground but it is a good enough little time killer.
What the back of the box says: “Jolene Blalock (Star Trek: Enterprise), James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Tony Todd (Candyman) star in this creepy chiller about a group of strangers who awaken in a locked asylum ward with no idea of who they are or how they got there. They are half-naked, cold, and frightened.
And they are not alone. Who has erased their memories? Why have they been imprisoned? And what is the supernatural force that is slaughtering them one by one? The answers wait deep in the darkness where a beast hungers to feed, escape is virtually impossible, and the shadows of sanity may hide the most shocking revelations of all.”
The old plot of a cadre of amnesiac strangers being trapped in a strange area is not exactly a new plot twist, but this little film does manage to milk it for an interesting 103 minutes. It helps matters that a trio of genre veterans is in the cast. Jolene Blalock played T’Pol on Star Trek: Enterprise, James Marsters was Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Tony Todd is quite the vet but is best known as the hook handed Candyman. Blalock makes a fetching heroine and Todd growls his way effectively through the part.
The plot may be familiar but it has enough mystery to keep your attention till the credits roll. Where it may let down is that the shadow monster is a digital creation and it’s not hard to see the digital seams in my opinion. The rest of the cast also does well. I think the film’s low budget has a lot to do with the sparse sets and lack of a better monster. Director Michael Winnick shows promise and it would be nice to see what he has if given a larger budget.
Shadow Puppets is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features include a commentary by director Michael Winnick and cinematographer Jonathan Hale.
The 8 minute “Shadow Puppets: Director and Cast Comments” has recollections from director Winnick, James Marsters, Jolene Blalock, and Tony Todd. A making of documentary is mentioned on the back of the box but there’s not anything like that on the disc. Finally there’s the trailer and trailers for other Starz DVDs.
It’s not anything that hasn’t been seen on screens before but it would make an interesting rental if you’re in the right frame of mind to accept the digital beastie or are a fan of any of the genre vets in the cast. You have to be willing to give it a little slack and if you are too critical then the film will fall apart.
Shadow Puppets is now available at Amazon. As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Monsters & Critics

Sad to hear SP went straight to DVD. When I get a chance, I shall read back for details on how to acquire this long-awaited James-lusting material project. ;D

I received my copy of the DVD this morning, after reading all the reviews of SP I expected to sit and just drool at James and put up with a crap movie. However I was pleasantly surprised, okay it wasn't great but I actually enjoyed it I really liked Tony Todd's character though he and James did a good job with a less than average script . Jolene Blalock left me cold, I actually thought she was rather 'hammy' and a bit expressionless Marc Winnick wasn't bad either as for the rest of the cast instantly forgetable. I found it wasn't scary in the least and the 'monster' lol .. well I've seen better on Who and Torchwood. All in all it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either and to be honest I probably wouldn't have bought it if James wasn't in it

And to think, some people complained about the quality of Abaddon - on a BBC 3 episode budget ;D

I got my copy of SP last week as well and started off being really pissed cos it wouldn't play on my DVD player I could of sworn it played all regions but obviously not. I did watch it on my comp though and even though it's no Oscar winner. It was quite watchable and JM, TT and JB did a decent job with what they'd got. The only thing that I thought was bad that was JM could have been in it longer or just get rid of the last few minutes of the film ;D James looked really good running around in his undies but I found my eyes drawn to JB too she didn't look bad either ;D

I loved it! Heee, it was rocking good hokum of the first water. And anyway worth it to see James do the Spike walk up them stairs. It was creepy enough to make me feel a bit nervous watching on my own and I jumped out of my skin two or three times. I'd never have taken the time to watch if James weren't in it, but I likes a good horror really and enjoyed this one. Lol at the monster once you could see him properly. It's always more scary when you are just wondering and hard to keep up the scary when you know it's just a black cloud with hilarious blue eyes. ;D James actoring was smashing, that girls actoring was a bit off in parts but that might have been the cliché dialogue which is expected of a horror film and so okay. Hilarious that they didn't put the lid back on at the end and let the damned thing out, then it's chasing them and they just fall over a log and lie there when they think certain death is gonna get them. Even I'd be up like a Jack Rabbit then lol. Loved the metaphoric ending with light prevailing over evil and the last line of dialogue was a doozy. ;D Pure cheese. 10 out of 10 and shame on James for dissing it. He's always dissing his past work and work-colleagues and it's gonna come back to bite him on the ass if he doesn't watch out, the prat. Loved it and to Twistie and Will for sending it to me. Now I feel guilty for not buying it. I shall do when I have a bit of spare cash.

It's a pity they seemed to succumb to all the old cliches, coz if you don't do it tongue-in-cheek people laugh for all the wrong reasons ;D And if you don't have the budget to reveal your monster/menace, don't try! Keep it a mystery.

Jolene Bla-lips bothered me throughout Shadow Puppets. She could have been better. I enjoyed the movie though, and I liked the twist toward the end, too.
Also, maybe it was already noted, or perhaps I'm the only dirty mind that, uhm, noticed but . . . what's up with Jolene's nipples? They were in completely opposite directions.
...
Just saying.
... Back to the movie itself, I still enjoy it and have watched it more than once, so I suppose it wasn't too horrible.
