Jim, via the McAnally's list:
Hey all,
Just wanted to drop some updates on you all. We'll start with the most often asked about:
TELEVISION--
No new word to report, except that the project is still moving forward and still looking strong. I have read a draft or two of the proposals flitting back and forth, and they bear a pleasingly strong resemblence to the novels, and may include dispensing of "Erik" Dresden for Harry Dresden.
(Which makes me happy. The most prominent Eric in my life was a high-school rival for the affections of a girl. He 1) egged my car and 2) got the girl. All in all, it worked out better for me that way, but my car's paint is STILL stained with eggs.) <snip>

Actually on James' site!
The Sci-Fi Channel has begun looking for their Harry Dresden in the 2 hour MOW of “The Dresden Files”. As many of you know, James brought this book to life in the audio version. If you’d like to see James as the lead in this MOW and possible series, feel free to contact the following executives on the project:
Bonnie Hammer (president Sci-Fi Channel) 30 Rockefeller Center NY, NY 10112
Mark Stern (President Original Programming for Sci-Fi Channel) 100 Universal City Plaza Bldg. 1440, 14th floor Universal City, CA 91608
Kevin Beggs (Lions Gate Studio) 2700 Colorado Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90404
They don't need to look any further than James , but I'll send em a postcard ;D

We had that whole postcard thing going back when the books were first optioned, but I find this a very positive thing in terms of James' management getting a campaign going - JM must really want to do it afterall. ;D Sometimes it's been hard to tell, he's been a bit cagey with his answers to questions about the project. But he's in love with Canada too, which helps ;D It was always seen as a movie project to act as a pilot for a possible series, so fingers crossed.

Oh, um. Jim B, who has always been very supportive of the idea of james playing Harry, is being a bit cautious in his response to this news on the McAnnally's list: Oh I hope it's not going to end up like the 'Spike' movie, ie; It's happening *yaaaaaaay*....ooops nope it might not be , sorry to sound so pessimistic I really hope it's just a case of miscommunication and I'll send off postcards anyway

I've been pondering this. I actually have little to no doubt that the project is moving forward. There have been heavy hints dropped for weeks now from... well, from someone who is excited about being involved in a very similar-sounding but not prepared/able to say exactly what yet project; and who has been wondering aloud about who might play the lead role... Steve is too savvy to broadcast this prematurely (look at how they sat on the Smallville role news); so you have to assume that he has received word as JM's manager that the role is looking to be cast. Jim B has had cause to say before that he really doesn't know what's going on. Remember the hooplah when it looked like TPTB wanted to change Harry to Erik, for instance. So if info is being sent out to agents etc for castings, then there's no reason why he would know about it (and let's not forget, he was the one that started the postcard campaign for the DF to be developed for / movie and was happy for JM to be mentioned as the choice for Harry in that).

Extraxr from an interview with Jim B, at SF CrowsNestFinally, and in this post-Buffy world, it's an appallingly obvious question (so forgive us), but if the Dresden Files were ever filmed, who would you like to see directing and acting in it?
That's actually harder to answer than I would have thought at first. When I see the books in my head, I almost always see them as Japanese-style animation. And I've never been asked about a director before. Hmmm. I've really enjoyed a lot of David Fury's work (on Buffy and Angel). Raimi, of course, has gone big time with Spider-Man, but I've loved his stuff ever since Evil Dead.
James Marsters (Spike from Buffy,) has read the audio books of the Dresden Files, and has really done a fantastic job. He doesn't just read them. He acts them, giving characters different voices and everything. He'd make a fine Harry. I think Vincent Vincenza ("Fun Bobby" on Friends and leading man of "The Invisible Man" on SciFi) could also do a great job. In idle moments, I think about Will Smith playing Dresden, purely for the wiseass insouciance that he's so good at. I tend to do fantasy casting without regard for petty considerations like Time, so I also think of a young Alec Guiness for Dresden, or a 1976 Carrie Fisher for Karrin Murphy.
I try not to think too hard about it, honestly. I can imagine the anime very clearly in my head, but I would hate to lock on to a fantasy cast and be disappointed when something actually does get made. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that everything works out for the best.

Picked this up at McAnally's. From VarietyPosted: Wed., Oct. 5, 2005, 10:00pm PT Net cages sci-fi guy Thesp ventures into with 'Dresden' By DENISE MARTIN
Making his first foray into television, Nicolas CageNicolas Cage has set up and will exec produce two-hour pilot "The Dresden Files" for Sci Fi Channel. CablerCabler has greenlit production on the project, based on Jim Butcher's bestselling novels. Lions GateLions Gate Television is onboard to produce in association with Cage's Saturn FilmsSaturn Films.
Hans BeimlerHans Beimler ("The District""The District") and Robert Wolfe ("The 4400") will write and exec produce alongside Cage. Saturn Films' Norm GolightlyNorm Golightly and Morgan Gendel also will exec produce.
Story follows Harry Dresden, a wizard who makes his living as a Chicago-based private eye. Using his extraordinary abilities to see the paranormal forces behind crimes, Dresden helps the police solve their more baffling cases.
Sci Fi exec VP of programming Mark SternMark Stern said, unlike the cabler's other original dramas, "Dresden" will pursue a more procedural-style of storytelling.
"It's very much a detective procedural with a speculative sci-fi spin -- a first for us and something we've been looking to do for a while," Stern said. "What the script did so well was to make the fantasy elements integral to (rather than superimposed on) the plot."
"There's this 'Rockford Files' quality to it that I love," he added.
"Dresden Files" is one of two pilots under series consideration at Sci Fi. Other is "Painkiller Jane," a comicbook adaptation about a young woman exposed to a biochemical weapon that gives her self-healing powers. Production on "Jane" wrapped early this year.
Sci Fi last month ordered to series "Eureka," a quirky drama about a man who stumbles upon a small town of geniuses working for the government (Daily Variety, Sept. 26).
"Dresden" is out to directors and casting. Production will begin in Toronto this fall for a target summer 2006 premiere.
Cage will next produce and star in "The Wicker Man" for writer-director Neil LaButeNeil LaBute. He toplines Paramount's upcoming pic "The Weather Man."
Date in print: Thurs., Oct. 6, 2005, Los Angeles

Jim has posted at McAnally's about the movie news. Y'all should go sign up so I don't feel so guilty about posting snippets from there! NOW it's official.
The script is based on the novel for Storm Front, but it ain't like it's going to be letter-for-letter or anything. Some elements are going to be discarded for the sake of story-length, others emphasized. There might be special effects! Don't expect the movie mirror the book precisely, although the writers have read the entire series and they're using elements from several different books, though not necessarily in the same way--think, I dunno, maybe X-Men comics versus X-Men movies versus X-Men cartoon series. Similar use of the story's characters and elements, but not necessarily positioned or utilized in the same way.
(Which is itself just the modern version of comedia del arte, but that's neither here nor there.)
I've seen the scenes they're using to audition for Dresden, which was interesting as hell. I hope to get a look at the full script before too terribly much longer. They're doing casting now (and I'll share information about it as it becomes share-able) and filming is scheduled for November 19.
Jim
Eep, November 19th! But StevieBoy must have known this when he made the postcards campaign post at JM's site, surely. So it would be do-able? *starts speculating wildly* If James injured himself filming Smallville ep 8 (Fortress of Solitude = ep Solitude in my mind), that would be maybe his sixth episode. Perhaps we then have a gap before they pick up his storyline again. The actual filming of a two hour movie wouldn't take so very long, would it?
