I've extracted this from an article about the 100th episode, because this bit is non-spoilery, and it shows James gettingo ver his frightening glee in describing Spike as a jerk: Angel was cursed with his soul and, after a century of wandering about aimlessly, was spurred into rejoining the human race and using his powers for good. Spike, on the other hand, driven by guilt and a desire to be a man worthy of Buffy's love (a love she once gave freely to Angel), risked life and limb to get his soul back -- and wound up saving the world.
"Angel doesn't seem to register that Spike has a soul," Marsters says. "It's the same reason that Spike never believed Angel having a soul. When I was evil, I didn't buy it. Now that I have a soul, I don't buy that he's reformed at all.
"The reason is, I've seen him in action. I've seen him kill too many people to ever believe that he could be reformed. It's exactly the same for him. He's seen Spike do so much stuff that all this prancing around, pretending that he cares now, has gotta be bull, but it's not. That's the wonderful thing. They both are reformed; they both are trying very hard to make up for it." <snip> So, underneath all "Angel's" monster makeup and kung-fu fighting, Marsters insists there's real meat on these bones. "Joss always aims so high in his themes. He's got two people striving to be good, in the real world.
"That sounds strange to say, because it's got vampires and stuff, but to not be coy, to not be overly sentimental, to not be overly simplistic about it -- how do you reform your life? If you really have done evil, how do you face the world and try to become your best self? How do you talk about these things?
"Man, redemption, it's what we all hope for, because frankly, we all know we've done evil. We're all human beings, and all of us have. We all have regret; we all have deep guilt; and we all, at the inner core of us, want to believe that we can redeem ourselves."
From zap2itThat's more like it, James!

Spike (James Marsters), Angel (The WB) I can't think of another character so often reinvented and so consistently delicious. James Marsters was born to play Spike, the bad-ass vampire turned reluctant good guy, turned lovelorn underdog, turned self-assigned hero, turned wisecracking sidekick. After going out on Buffy's last episode in a literal blaze of glory, he reappeared this season on Angel. Awash in contradictions, he's both fiendish and vulnerable, heroic and villainous. Wherever he might be along the good/evil continuum, he is surely the pulse of the Buffyverse. /features/best2003-colgan.shtml" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.popmatters.com//features/best2003-colgan.shtml

Here's an interesting piece on Spike, and why it might have been better for the character to have not been brough tback for Angel 5. She's a fan, it isn't a bash. And I think there are some good points made..... Here's the link - www.darkworlds.com/ls/art_13479.html - it's worth a click! I think my own selfish desire to see James week in, week out is what kept me glad Spike was back, in the early part of the season. I think he has been written more consistently lately and he has been a major player in some of the best episodes. But dramatically, I think she is right.....

KristenLuvsSpike transcribed this and said it could be posted wherever. It is attributed to zap2it, but I just went there to find the origianl and couldn't see it. Maybe it is so new it hasn't made it there yet! Anyway, it's a nice little piece. "Angel flies to TNT in reruns"
By Kare O'Hare Zap2it
Although he felt that Angel could go on "to season 6 and beyond", JM will likely depart the show at the end of this season as one happy actor. In mid-Feb, execs at The WB chose not to renew AtS for another year, so the Buffy spinoff comes to a close in May after 5 season and a little over 100 episodes. After Buffy ended last year, Marsters brought himself and his character, the Britpunk vampire Spike, over to AtS, which also airs weekdays in reruns on TNT. "I felt like, over on Buffy, I was at a feast where my plate was smaller than everyone else's," Marsters says, in an interview conducted before the cancellatioan announcement. "If you counted the pages, Spike averaged about 3 pages an episode, and that had to do with just getting him in the room more than anyghing else. I'm not complaining. I'm surprised they were able to fit that character in at all." "But, I also felt like, 'Everyone else has got all these beautiful, wonderful jokes and great plays on words' What I got was fabulous----I just wanted to act more, I wanted to be here more. "Now they've heaped my plate so full that I'm stretched to the breaking point. It's everything that I dreamed of. Now, the other side's starting to look sweet. Boy, I was well rested back then." After slowly changing from Buffy's (SMG) foe to her reluctant ally to her eventual love interest, Spike sacrificed himself to save the world in the series finale. But Angel wanted him too, so Spike's sojourn into the Great Beyond was cut short. He soon appeared---1st in ghostly form, then later corporeal---in the LA office of the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart, now being run by Spike's mentor, nemesis and cheif rival for Buffy's affections, the do-gooder vampire Angel (DB). So the only 2 vamps w/ souls (and therefore consciences and moral compasses) became very reluctant allies in the fight against evil---that is, when they weren't fighting w/each other. Marsters wasn't all that nuts about being a ghost for several episodes at the beginning of the season. "Techinically, it was really a pain, frankly, setting up those shots where you go through a wall. It burns a lot of the day, and it takes away froma cting, which is what I'm here for." "Angel, in his evil, pre-soul days, taught young vampire Spike how to live the bloodsucker's life, which was a far cry from his mortal existence as William, a tortured Victorian poet. "Spike is a bit of a doppelganger for Angel," Marsters says, "and so, functionally, it was good to start on the thematic level, an almost human level, as opposed to just rocking it out w/ a huge fight right off the bat." Forced to talk instead of fighting, the 2 characters got a chance to work out their differences. "It's an older bro/younger bro thing," Marsters says. "That's how it feels. At the point when William met Angel, he was everything you'd want to be. He was cool; he was dark; he was mysterious." "You get the sense with William that he didn't really have a strong father figure in his life, so he looked up to Angel pretty quickly." Although no one but the writers know how the show will ultimately end (and The WB is talking about doing movies), Marsters has a specific goal for his character. "What I hope can happen for Spike is that he will impact Angel & send him on a forver more interesting arc towrds redemption. It's Angel's show. It will not work any other way."

Some Spikeyness in the latest UK Angel mag (#10), including a big ol' centrefld. But it is "just" one of those blue-green S6 promo pics. One of the newer ones would have been nice...
They also have their Spike Top Ten ep picks, with the nice legs and arms akimbo, tight black tee and jeans look pic to illustrate it. But they are such crappy journos that they get episodes WRONG! This thankfully isn't listed as a fave, but they say the attempted rape ep is in Entropy... did they ever watch BtVS, I wonder?!

Excerpt from a David B interview in TVZone ;D Spangel ahoy! They may not have gotten along in the past but Angel and Spike are going to have to set aside their differences for their sakes and that of the world. "Midway through this season a bond forms between both characters that is quite unique and one you've never really seen before on ," says Boreanaz. "Spike and Angel find that they're going to need each other because of what's ahead. As I mentioned before it's terrific to have James Marsters on the show with us. He's a good person and a strong actor and to have someone like that on the set day-in and day-out is, for me, a blessing. James has such an intensity as well as passion about the work. We look at each scene as being a challenge and if we keep on raising the acting bar it can only mean the audiences are going to enjoy themselves all the more."
Hee, "never really seen before on " - full on hot Spangel sex! Well, maybe not, but still....

www.rugbyreviewtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=689&ArticleID=830936
A LOCAL salon has stepped in to ensure the lead in Rugby Theatre's latest show has a hairstyle with bite.
When Adam Trezise had to bleach his hair for the lead role as a vampire in Rugby Theatre's current show, staff at Klickers in Regent Street volunteered to help, to avoid any mishaps.
Adam is playing Gabriel, the lead character in The Late Sleepers, an all-singing, all-dancing vampire musical which opened at Rugby Theatre last night (Wednesday).
Owner Martin Cole said staff were more than happy to help ensure Adam's hair looked its best - as well as reminiscent of Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
He said: "We're always more than happy to help the local community and charities, so when the theatre approached us we were pleased to help by doing Adam's hair free of charge.
"By all accounts the production is going to be great, and we're looking forward to seeing it."
The Late Sleepers is the annual production by the Youth Theatre Project and runs until Sunday, August 1 at 7.30pm.
For tickets call the box office on (01788) 541234.

I haven't seen the mags myself, but Clairel at the ASSB posted this info: The BUFFY and ANGEl magazines conducted a fan poll of who the sexiest male characters on both shows are. Results follow with a few of my own remarks in brackets, and after that the magazine's comments on the top winner are quoted verbatim:
1. Spike - 58% of vote 2. Angel - 23% of vote 3. Wesley - 8% of vote 4. Xander - 3% of vote [everyone else mentioned got 1% or less so I ahve snipped]
SEXIEST MOMENT/EPISODE: Spike gout our temperatures rising quite a bit by appearing semi-naked several times -- but he could not have been sexier when he cuddled up to Buffy in "Touched," held her, looked after her, and simply watched her sleep. Ahhhh, how romantic!
WHY WE THINK HE'S SEXY: Spike's a combination of what everyone wants. He's strong and can look after himself, while at the same time he's vulnerable, sensitive and not afraid to speak his feelings and wear his heart on his sleeve. He's just wicked enough that you can't help finding him exciting, but he's also very charming. But perhaps the sexiest thing of all is that he changed who he was because he wanted to be a better person, for himself and the woman that he loved. Oh, and we suppose his killer physique, sparkling eyes and wicked sense of humor might also have something to do with it.
IDEAL DATE SCENARIO FOR SPIKE: A Ramones concert, followed by a splot of pool at the Bronze, with onion flowers and Buffalo wings to eat, or a visit to a poetry reading, then cuddling up in front of his favorite show, Passions, with the girl of his dreams (or should that be fantasies).
SPIKE'S LOVE STATUS: Old Blondie Bear has always been a bit of a hit with the ladies (though, sadly, we can't say the same for poor William). First there was Drusilla, then there was Harmony, then there was Buffy, then -- very briefly -- there was Anya, but in the end, Buffy was the girl that won Spike's undying love. Spike is currently single -- and will, no doubt, be there when Buffy comes into his life again.

Joss on Spangel slash: whedonesque.com/comments/9323#106460 Honestly, what's most fascinating is that every post here tells me more about the poster than about the subject matter. That's what makes fiction grand. I will say a few things:
1)When I called James "the best ingenue Angel ever had" I merely meant that there was enormous acting chemistry between them. After throwing different actresses up against David (sometimes literally) it was gratifying to find someone who brought out passion in David's performance that I'd never seen. I mean, look at Caveman vs Astronauts, for god's sake! David is off the charts hilarious. I learned early on to film those two in one-ers instead of regular coverage because their energy just kept increasing. Others have misinterpreted that quote before.
2)What may or may not have happened is entirely up to the viewer, that's what makes it art. Having said that, I know EXACTLY what happened and it's funny that I'm never going to tell anyone. But did no one see the obvious smoldering passion between the Blue Hand guys? MAN, did you guys miss the boat.
3)In my world, heroes bugger each other senseless. Not all of them, but more than you'd think, and probably not who you're thinking. But seriously, Anybody here care to tell Apollo and the Midnighter how a hero should behave? To their faces?

This from an author of vampire fiction, as posted at AmazonTERESA MEDEIROS REVEALS HER FAVORITE VAMPIRE (Not counting Julian from THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME!) Originally posted 6:39 PM PDT, September 19, 2006, updated at 5:43 AM PDT, September 20, 2006
With or without a soul, Spike from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is my all-time favorite vampire. (I started to say "fictional vampire", then realized that would be redundant.) Spike, with his soulful eyes, biting wit, and self-deprecating humor could definitely tempt me to try love at first bite. (And my oh my, what about those cheekbones???!!!)
Spike (as portrayed by the incomparable James Marsters) arrived in Sunnydale early in the second season with his lunatic lover Druscilla in tow. Introduced as the definitive Big Bad, no one could have guessed his character's journey would lead him to fall deeply and irrevocably in love with Buffy, proving just how quickly loathing can turn to love when one's nemesis is a diminutive blonde with a martyr complex and a weakness for creatures of the night.
Their sizzling chemistry was explored in Season Four in the episode "Something Blue" when a heartbroken Willow inadvertantly cast a love spell on the vampire and the Slayer. To the horror of Buffy's friends and family, Buffy and Spike begin to nuzzle each other's necks and pick out china patterns for their wedding. In Spike's piece de resistance, the Season Five episode "Fool for Love", the pre-vampire Spike is revealed to have been a sensitive soul, something of a mama's boy who was christened "Spike" and "William the Bloody" not because he was so fearsome but because he wrote poetry so bloody awful it made you want to drive a spike through your forehead. (What writer who has ever been reviewed by KIRKUS couldn't identify with that?) This episode also revealed that by the 1980's Spike had metamorphosed into a leather-clad vampire so preternaturally cool that Billy Idol stole his platinum locks and rebel's snarl.
Spike won my heart for keeps at the end of this episode when he marched up to Buffy's house with shotgun in hand, determined to purge his life and heart of the Slayer forever. Instead he ended up letting her cry on his shoulder while he awkwardly patted hers. More tingles ensued when Buffy and Spike finally consummated their attraction with a swoon-worthy kiss at the end of the legendary musical episode, "Once More with Feeling."
So who is your favorite vampire of all time? Do you prefer Angel's Heathcliff-style brooding to Spike's caustic sarcasm? Did Frank Langella's smoldering DRACULA tempt you to leave your balcony door unlocked or would you prefer to have Gary Oldman's untrimmed fingernails caressing your throat? Does Louis or Lestat light your fire? Do you prefer the laid-back Southern gentleman Bill from Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series or the cunning and elegant Jean-Claude from Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books?
In a fictional world where every vampire has a little bit of soul, who would YOU be most likely to greet at your front door with those two immortal words, "Bite me" (You can visit Teresa's website at www.teresamedeiros.com

I think FFL really sealed the deal on their Spike love for a lot of people. Seeing who he really was/had been made him even more interesting, and suddenly made the character make even more sense. I'm sure M reads the other vamp books mentioned, I bet she has her faves amongst those guys. Personally, I'm fond of Thomas in the Dresden Files, but maybe because I can so see JM as him
