Casting sides for AtS 5.1
There is only one scene shown. It involves Angel, Wes, Fred, and Gunn with a new character named Eve. She explains that she's there to show them around W&H and explain how things work. She's taking Lilah's place because it takes up too much energy to reanimate a dead person on the mortal plane for a long time. Lilah was used to bring them in because she was a familiar face, but from now on they have to deal with Eve. Eve explains that the W&H client list involves a lot of demons and other evil entities, and because it's a business those clients have to be satisfied. But before Angel and his friends start attacking the clients they should think about the good they can do just by having access to W&H information. They can prevent the worst evils while living with the lesser evils. Fred, Gunn, and Angel all sass Eve and give her a bit of a hard time, but one senses they're all going to pretty much knuckle under.
The description for Eve said she's to be younger than Lilah and should dress more "casual-sexy" than Lilah would, but they're "sisters under the skin."

More sides:
Episode One spoilers (sides)
Hauser - Hauser is the leader of W&H special Ops. He is first seen securing the area, after Angel rescues a woman from a vamp. W&H are tracking Angel. Hauser is of the opinion that he and his team should do the actual 'wetwork'. A W&H lawyer hands over a sheet of paper to the rescued woman, indemnify W&H for any injuries sustained in the rescue
EVE - Nothing new really, the text is different slightly. This scene happens after Angel meets Hauser, before going into the Office, Angel and Gunn talk about W&H's interference. They mean changes to the original Eve side we had a wee while ago, and posted here - PK
Angel is trying to get (info) on a guy named Spanky. Harmony knows where he is. Spanky is a freelance sorceror who showed up at Corbin Fries a few times (need Fries' sides to work out his role, but its important). Fred has trouble reaching Gunn. Angel gets to Spanky's by car (one of seven sporty numbers). In the garage Hauser again reminds him that its his role to do the wetwork. Angel asks him whether he means fieldwork, and says he will be getting Spanky.
Spanky is a sorceror in his 50's, he appears to be into S&M, his name is derived from his favourite past time. Spanky built a 'vessal' for Corbin Fries, that disolves when a magic word is said. Looks like Fries has put a bomb inside it. Spanky tries to kill Angel by strangeling him (doesnt work, vampire).
Gunn is visiting the doctors. He had to wait five hours (doctors sides would be useful).
Fries is in court for unknown reasons, I assume W&H are defending him. Lorne tells Angel to get Fries junior (either Sam or Matthew I assume) into issolation. It seems Fries is going to say the word (the one that dissolves the magic vessal holding the bomb) soon. Hauser thinks a better way of containing the threat is to kill Fries Junior, and everyone else at the school
Angel, Wes and Harmony, comment that Angel won't reach the class in time by car. There is confusion between Angel and Wes as to who is boss.
Hauser and the special ops arrive at the school, but Angel is already there (Helicopter). Angel and Special Ops fight it out Angel escapes, leaving the ops team beaten.

Angel: In the fifth-season premiere (which remains untitled), the show is looking to fill four roles, each a guest star of some type. They include: Hauser, a no-nonsense soldier who is “jarhead to jartoe”; Spanky, an older man who works in the mystical trade “who is a bit kinky” and is “in the kind of good shape that is slightly wrong for a man his age; A man called “the Doctor,” who is textbook creepy and who does a medical procedure on Gunn of some type; and the well-healed Fries, who is very much a thug. The latter is a client of Wolfram/Hart, looking at a 20 year sentence for a variety of felonies. We’re getting close to the new season, and I can’t wait.

From SpoilerSlayer: I can provide at least a solid confirm that what everyone is hearing is accurate. There's a lot of information available, but I'll try to summarize as well as I can here (note: I'm doing this while at work, so there may be some tweaking later on with the details) The main gist of the episode seems to revolve around one of Wolfram and Hart's old clients, who is on trial. They are threatening to destroy the city (apparently he has a young child who is essentially a giant magical vessel) if he's convicted. Some of the tidbits from the episode.
- Angel is out on night patrol in the opening scene. He rescues a young woman, only to discover that Wolfram and Hart is keeping tabs on him. It seems he has a Special Ops detail led by a man called Hauser, who are planting tracers/bugs on Angel when he's in the field. Not only that, but a team of lawyers also travels with the Ops team, to take care of any legal issues.
- In order to get a feel for the staff of Wolfram and Hart, Lorne is conducting interviews with the employees. You could almost call them auditions, as they have to sing for Lorne so he can get a read on them.
- One of the Wolfram and Hart doctors wants a closer look at Gunn, because of his experience in the White Room. The doctor refers to the creature in the White Room as 'The Conduit'. Gunn is subjected to some pretty intense tests.
- There have been a few minor changes to the original Eve scene. She does not refer to Lilah, nor mention that she won't be seen again. In addition, Fred is not in the office when the initial exchange with Eve takes place.
- Harmony not only is in this episode, but seems to be part of either Angel's or, and this is more likely, Wolfram and Hart's staff
- Angel has to force some info out of your usual wacky demon, who's name Spanky. Which is also his occupation. - Angel wants to neutralize the child/vessel by isolating or preventing the trigger from being activated. Hauser's team has different ideas. Angel's solution is to fire the Special Ops team, theirs is to kill Angel
- The show has taken on what I can only describe as a definite 'Alias' feel. Flashy cars, helicopters, special ops teams. If Harmony starts going undercover wearing cool wigs and skimpy outfits, maybe we should call it 'Angelias'.
(thanks again to T for providing the confirm) As for Spike, he's nowhere to be found. But I have a feeling like last seasons Buffy, he'll probably make at least a cameo in the final scene.

Episode 5.1 Spoilers July 17, 2003 The casting sides for Episode 1 (written by Joss Whedon) have been released. Here's a summary: -In the teaser, Angel saves a woman who's being attacked by a vamp in an alley. He dusts the vamp.
- Angel is confronted by a group of paramilitary type guys with machine guns. Then several lawyers arrive on the scene. The leader of the paramilitary guys is Hauser. He tells Angel that they're his operations' team and they were sent by W&H to back him up.
- Then one of the lawyers comes up to Angel, telling him not to leave until they control the scene. W&H has been tracking Angel with a tracking monitor on his shirt.
- The woman who Angel just saved is giving a liability release form to fill out then asked by the lawyer to pose for pictures with Angel. The woman and Angel are both rather dumbfounded.
-Act 1 begins with two kindergartners going to class, talking about comic books. They walk into their classroom. As one of the boys sits down, something happens...
- A few scenes later, Angel goes to work the following day and complains to Gunn and Wes about W&H tracking him.
- Angel goes into his office, and Eve is there. She's the W&H liaison between Angel and the Senior Partners. She starts to explain what Angel is supposed to be doing, which is keeping his mostly demon and evil clients happy.
- A few scenes later, Wes is briefing Angel on a legal case W&H has. Lowlife criminal Corbin Fries and his thug lawyer, Desmond Keel, come in. Harmony is there as a secretary or assistant, offering everyone coffee.
- Fries goes on trial tomorrow. He's guilty and he gave W&H a lot of money before Angel started running the place to keep himself out of jail. But they're his law firm and they have to get him off, or he will drop a bomb and destroy all of California.
- Act 2 begins with Lorne reading W&H employs in a conference room. He has a list of names and is marking off whether they are evil or not. He listens to a W&H employee singing.
- In the next scene, Fred explains to Knox about Lorne's abilities to read people while decorating her office.
- A few scenes later, Fred is trying to page Gunn, but he's not answering. Lorne is questioning why Harmony is there.
- Angel is going out to meet with a sorcerer named Spanky who's connected to Fries. He's not going via the sewers, instead W&H has a fleet of sports cars in the garage for Angel. Hauser comes up to Angel, wanting to know if his unit is going on the mission.
- Angel goes to Spanky's ratty apartment and tells him he's there on W&H business and is let in. Angel wants to know what Spanky did for Fries. Angel threatens Spanky with a paddle. Spanky reveals he gave Fries a mystical container - one that a bomb could be placed in.
- Spanky tries to strangle Angel, but that's rather useless. Angel whacks Spanky across the room with the paddle.
- Gunn is at an incredibly creepy doctor's office. The doctor knows about him being in the white room. The doctor does some very painful procedure on Gunn.
- Fred & Knox are researching what work the W&H lab did for Fries.
- Fred reports to Wes the information that she and Knox have found about a virus that Fries had a W&H lab tech make. It looks like Fries doesn't have a bomb but instead a chemical warfare type virus.
- Lorne is monitoring the courtroom where Fries is on trial, reporting back to Angel. Keel is trying to drag things out. They've found out that Fries has a kid, and he's dangerous. Angel heads to the boy's school. Hauser is monitoring Lorne and Angel's conversation from a van. He's out to prove how things are done, so his team heads out to terminate the boy.
- Wes and Gunn arrive at the courtroom, right as the defense can't stall anymore and it's time for final arguments.
- Gunn moves for a mistrial on the grounds that the judge has a conflict of interest. Gunn has tax records that show business dealings between the judge and Fries. Gunn totally has the judge and is being a big shot lawyer.
- The Ops team busts into a school, looking for a boy. But Angel had gotten there first to prevent them from finding the kid. There's a fight between Hauser and Angel. Hauser first pulls a gun on Angel, but his team has stakes and holy water too.

Lumily at the BBB posted this when she found a detailed summary of the first ep. I have that summary. If you haven't found it, and crave it, let me know At the beginning of episode 1, Angel is given an envelope by Fred, that he doesn't open until the end of the show. When he opens the envelope the amulet Spike was wearing when he died/burned up/got out of Buffy's life/whatever it was, falls out and turns into a burning, screaming Spike. Fade to black.

A-ha! At last, a summary that can be posted in the fresh air! www.spoilerslayer.com/archives/002420.phpConviction Summary (Courtesy Of Eljay)
Episode opens with a scene that echoes *In the Dark* -- girl running down an alley, fleeing from a pursuer, and getting saved by Angel. He stakes the vampire and prepares to leave as half of Wolfram & Hart show up. Lawyers with waivers for the rescuee to sign; an ops team prepared to take out opposition, headed by a man named Hauser; and an obsequious guy who nervously offers Angel a latte as he brings his car around for him.
Next morning at Wolfram & Hart, Wesley and Fred are discussing their continued misgivings at coming to work there. Fred introduces Knox to Wesley, and she and Knox head off for her office together, Wes not especially pleased that Fred allows Knox to carry her box of files after not allowing Wes to do so. Gunn shows up and is equally ambivalent about being there, even as he shows Wesley the office he has selected for himself. They run into Angel on the way to his office, and Angel is annoyed about how W&H put a tracer on him and interrupted his helping the helpless efforts the night prior. The only one who seems totally at ease with the new regime is Lorne.
Angel and co. are even less happy when they enter his office and find Eve waiting for them. She's going to be their liaison to the Senior Partners. She explains the dilemma they're in -- if they destroy W&H, they won't have it anymore. Evil will just set up shop somewhere else without them, and they'll be back on the outside again. Whereas, this way, at least they can nip away at the edges of evil. Isn't that exciting?
She points them toward their client files, and they spend the remainder of the day and evening in sickened reading. Gunn returns to his office to find Eve waiting for him with an offer he can't refuse.
Next day, Angel discovers, much to his chagrin, that his new secretary, er assistant, is Harmony. Wes chose her -- figured Angel could use a familiar face in this environment. Harmony can't wait for Cordy to find out -- oh. Oops. Nobody told her.
Wes tells Angel there's a problem with one of their clients -- Corbin Fries. He's on trial for various nefarious acts, and it isn't going well. Fries tells Angel and gang that if they don't get him off, he's going to drop *the bomb*. Which will kill pretty much everyone living in California.
Meanwhile, Lorne is checking out the staff, having them sing for him, one after the other. Knox and Fred are talking when she gets called to Angel's office to discuss the Fries crisis. So does Lorne. Nobody can find Gunn. Angel is afraid Fries' *bomb* might be some kind of disease or virus thing, hence, Fred's department. She heads back to the lab to work on that while Angel goes off to interrogate *Spanky*, a freelance mystic who's done some work for Fries.
Spanky tells Angel that he built a mystical container for Fries, that could contain anything. After some *encouragement*, he tells Angel where the container is now located. In his son, Matthew.
This hits Angel hard. Eve comes over to console him. She's the only one who knows why he's so upset; after all, none of the others remember Connor. He's not happy that she knows. She tells him if he reacts this way to all his cases, he's going to burn out within his first week on the job.
We meanwhile find out why Gunn is missing. He's at some scary lab, having scary things done to him. We know not what.
Fred and Knox figure out that a former W&H employee probably developed a virus for Knox under the table -- but since the man seems to have been killed for doing so, he can't tell them anything useful about his creation. And apparently, all Fries has to do to release it is say a particular word, but they don't know the word, so Wesley can't come up with a defense. Lorne is keeping an eye on the trial, and things are NOT going well for Fries. Angel decides to seize the boy and put him into isolation to contain the possible release of the virus.
But Hauser's ops guys have been listening, and they decide to do the job themselves by killing the boy and everyone around him. Unfortunately for them, Harmony hears this in office scuttlebutt and alerts Angel. Who has a helicopter. And gets there (to the school) first. Unluckily for Hauser and friends.
Meanwhile, as the trial is working toward an unhappy (for Fries) close, a new lawyer shows up. It's Gunn! He demands a mistrial, because of the judge's unrevealed stock holdings in one of Fries' companies. He's spouting off chapter and verse of the California legal precedents, and Wesley and Lorne, watching the proceedings, are very confused.
Gunn tells the others he'd had a procedure to stick the law in his brain. The MoG didn't have a lawyer on their team; now they do. Of course everyone else is worried about what else they may have stuck in Gunn's brain.
Angel and co reflect on their *victory* -- they saved a scumbag from justice, and returned to him the son he had infected with a deadly virus. Hooray. But at least this buys them the time to try to figure out a way to de-trigger the boy and find an antidote to the virus.
Angel says they are going to figure out how to use W&H to best advantage, and why they were invited to work there. As he speaks, he's tearing open an envelope, and something falls to the floor. It's an amulet. They back away as dust swirls, and a figure appears in the dust, slowly becoming more and more clear. It's Spike!

I don't know if we're going to start a seperate thread for commentary, but for now, I'll stick my comment in here... I just finished watching the first ep... a bit grainy but it'll look better on the . Anyway, my favorite lines: ----- Angel: "I have no problem spanking men." ----- Wes: "Spike?" Angel: "Spike!" Harmony: "Blondie Bear?!" -----

Here is fine. The threads will have to remain marked as spoilers, because of the rest of the world! But we can have the comments and thoughts here.
Yeah, the versions available so far aren't the finished copies - titles, SFX, etc - but spoiler whores can't wait for the niceties. ;D
I've been hearing good things about Harmony's role so far. I wasn't sure at first, but I think on reflection it was good to have her around for Spike's return.

Yeah it was a very rough version still with last years credits. Apart from all that though I thought it was Bloody Brilliant. So funny made me laugh out loud more than once and Harmony was just amazing. Hats of to Mercedes for doing a great job. I know Joss has changed the premise of the show so that more new viewers are gonna be able to pick it up without having followed the previous seasons. But there were so many in house jokes going on aswell that it was though there hadn't been a gap between Home and Conviction.
If I was gonna score it I would definitley give it 10/10 but then it was written by Joss. ;D

For those who haven't been down the download route, but are lookin' for a good 'Feed, you'll find a lovely entre at www.angelsacolyte.com/I have succumbed and am downloading the episode now. Back later with thoughts - I don't have as much faith as Twistie is Joss' writing no more. But I am open-minded (all I can say right now is it will have to go a long way to score more than Just Rewards, in my book!)

OK...the big moment (hour) arrived and half way thru all I could think was...Gee, I really misss Buffy and the gang. It's no secret that I am not a fan of the Angel character, tho I am starting to watch S1 and found the 1st ep not too shabby. However, now that I've watched the 'Conviction' ep, I guess it is not really necessary to watch the backlog as the new show, in it's attempt to attract new viewers, doesn't seem to have a lot to do with it. I plan to watch it again, just to be sure, but my first impression was: posh offices and characters don't meld, premise is a real stretch, banter that seems to be for the sake of banter, (Cyrus hit the high spots above), highstrung (taut) Fred would not last a week in her new job in the real world, very 'Alias' (which, hey, is already on the air, on a major network, Joss) and Matrixy (how the hell did Buffy ever knock Angel down?) Eve was cardboard 'sexy' appearing in repetitive scenes and Spike showed up for the last 5 seconds. I deliberately did not read any of the spoilers so I could watch this 'fresh'. I just didn't find anything fresh about it. The clips for next week focused on Spike irritating Angel and they were funny but I hope there's more than one-liners. If I was watching this show for the first time, and not eager to see what develops with Spike, I wouldn't tune in next week. Oh well, to each his own.

I2, you MUST watch it next week!! It is absolutely glorious! I was so excited I could barely breathe! But that's JE, not Conviction! Lol! And do keep watching S1 - Doyle is an absolute delight, and it is useful to see how far certain characters have come (and to wonder where others have gone!). And yeah, Angel leaps tall buildings at a single bound on his own show, doesn't he! ;D I think the whole point is they are MEANT to look out of place, be uneasy. It's a very dubious and risky thing they have done... well, Angel did on their behalf, making a pact like this with the Senior Partners. And a certain character will be pointing out the inherent dangers of it all, trust me. Okay, my take on the episode..... the plot is wafer thin, couldn't possibly stand up on its own. But what it does do is allow Joss to introduce us to the resources and working style of W&H from the inside, introduce new characters and develop our core gang. Have to say, I loved the teaser so much that I was smitten and willing to go with it the rest of the way. There's Angel, leaping his tall buildings, fighting the good fight (and it WAS a good fight!), being all broody and noble and ... well, patronising! And then WHOA!! The might of his W&H crew descends and takes complete control, leaving him bemused, befuddled and way out of his depth. Contrast this with the way he "handles" Hauser at the end... more of which later So, leaving aside the skanky plot.... I thought Joss did a great job with the characterisations, scene setting and dialogue. Fred, nervous and excited, yet later kick-ass take charge; Lorne slipping into his new role with sublime ease and relishing his schmoozing with the stars; Gunn wanting more from his life and by god taking it without hestitiation when the time comes; Wes seems right now to be the sceptical, quiet, reflective one.... but I wonder how long that will last? And Angel all conflicted and confused, but given the way he offs Hauser - and this IS a taste of things to come - he is going to be treading a very ambiguous path, to say the least.... The last of mercy? Bloody hell! And Harmony ;D I don't want to turn into an adoring Harmony fan... I really don't. I always liked her as a comic foil for Spike but she did get on my nerves... But here, she is wonderful! Truly an inspired addition to the cast, and I hope the other writers find her voice consistantly throughout her eps... and man, she just HAS to be taken on for more than a few eps. I feel it in my water, lol! Does anyone else think that the guests and supporting actors in "Angel" are somehow of a higher caliber than on BtVS? It really struck me for the first time when watching the first two eps of this season. Maybe it's because they tend to be a bit older and more fleshed out (and more experienced actors). But as small as their roles were, Spanky and Fries were excellently done, Fries squirmingly loathsome but having a great line which I may have to use for a while "Do you think I give a ferret's anus....?!" And Knox... I'm gonna keep my eye on Knox.... hugely likable, excellent actor (and he was a shining light in the dreak of Buffy for his one ep last season), but no singing for Lorne...?! And just too.... nice and getting along with Fred too well.... As for Eve, I neither like her or dislike her right now and wait to see what happens (although being spoiled senseless I'm kinda looking forward to ep 5 ) Other wee touches I enjoyed - Joss doing the telephone switchboard vocieovers.... very funny! Angel to Wes "You turned evil a lot faster than I thought you would" on him hiring Harm. ;D And then there was Spike! Uh, and just how did Wesley know.... Don't forget to rate this ep in the poll further down the Angel section!

Don't get me wrong, I realize the point is for them to be uneasy...the prob was it all just seemed so stilted.. contrived, wooden (acting), predictable. I did like the transformation of Gunn tho.
...Lmao, which he actually DID in the opening scene!
And you know I will watch next week due to a certain returning character.
Oh yea, I like Doyle already!

Lol, I went back and added to my post somewhat, after I watched the ep! But I forgot to mention Cordy and how that was handled.... I thought Harmony's reaction was great, all concern for 20 seconds and then all bright and breezy and on with the show. But they need to do something about the leaving her in a perpetual coma thing at SOME point in the series or it will be very very annoying. And the references to Connor were okay I guess. I think the enormity of the end of last season has to way heavy on the Brooding One and will inform his actions for quite some time if the writers are doing their jobs properly. Complete newbies to the show wouldn't know what the freaking hell they were all on about of course.... but would they give a ferret's anus, I wonder..?!

I was at Lazer X last night of course when the ep aired... which my dad would not let me watch because he was watching some random movie he happened upon... his theory: "You're taping it at home." Yeah hopefully it taped properly... I know that my season 1 tape did not start and my sister started it soon after the show came on... of course, it was "In the Dark"... Anyway, I should be back after I've watched it... if it taped... but I'm having a very hard time typing and it is driving me CRAZY!!! [insert crosseyed frustrated smilie!] edit: I have only checked out the beginning to be sure I got it, and I just have to say I love the way they've completely redone the opening credits, especially the way they've added James/Spike throughout the whole thing and have him credited second! ;D

I liked this episode. It's good, but IMHO, not great... I am intrigued to see what else W & H did to Gunn (come on, there HAS to be something else! ). Also, are Gunn and Fred completely over now? They didn't show any sign of them ever being together! Not that I liked that pairing a whole lot, but I just thought he would have more of a reaction to Fred & Knox, that's all. And, Spike is back! Spike is back!! ;D
