Casting sides news for ep 4 from www.filmjerk.com/nuke/article595.html
The Haunted House Comes to Wolfram & Hart: Episode 5.04 Details for ''Angel'' Written 08-20-2003 by ChrisFaile
Details on the fourth episode of “Angel” for the coming season have arrived here at FilmJerk.com and it looks like Wolfram & Hart is about to become a little more haunted by its past than usual. In the as-yet-untitled episode, written and directed by Steven S. DeKnight, six new characters are introduced— albeit only as guest or co-stars, none recurring. And one new character has a direct connection to Spike, who seems to remain in ghost form at this point as well.
The episode, which appears to be the series' first ever Halloween-themed story, centers on the W&F offices being overrun by spirits due to a void created by a former employee, with all the spirits having a past connection to the law firm. Feel free to speculate on what the following roles mean for the episode in the feedback forum below. The new characters are:
Pavayne: A regal man, who possesses an 18th century, aristocratic bearing with the physical precision of a surgeon. A brutal psychopath (a la Jack the Ripper), he was nicknamed "The Reaper" and infamous for performing unnecessary surgery on his patients— the kind they don't recover from. His skill in the dark arts has allowed him to survive as a spirit in the bowels of Wolfram & Hart since the1700's. The character is listed in his 30s or 40s.
Claire: In her early 20s, she is described as “hip, fun and hot.” The character is a clairvoyant brought in to lead a seance at Wolfram and Hart, which we’re guessing might be an attempt to eradicate those haunting the place. Smart, sharp, quick-wilted, she is not one to suffer fools. Trying to get to her Pilates class, she's gotta move this séance along.
Lawyers #1 and #2: Listed as 25- to 35-year-old males, they are somewhat disgruntled with the new regime running Wolfram & Hart. Possible cannon fodder?
Hanging Man: A distinguished attorney, he ran Wo!fram & Hart in the 1940s, until he committed suicide. His spirit is still hanging around, trapped in a void where he roams the halls of his old law firm, thanks to Pavayne’s efforts. The character is described as being in his 40s or 50s.
The Glass Woman: A female spirit killed in the 1940s, she's a “Girl Friday”-type professional still drifting around W&H and suffering the shard of glass embedded In her eye. In her 20s and beautiful, she continually taunts Spike (James Marsters) throughout the episode, to his displeasure.
The Armless Woman: A young female spirit (circa 1890), whose arms are severed et the elbow. She too is trapped in the void created by Pavayne. The casting directors are looking for double or single arm amputees, disabled below the elbow.
DeKnight was responsible for writing and directing episode 4.17 “Inside Out,” which introduced Jasmine as the Big Bad for the season.
The Scorecard Executive Producer: Joss Whedon Co-Executive Producer: Jeffrey Bell Producer: Kelly A. Manners Writer & Director: Steven S. DeKnight Casting Directors: Barbara Stordahl and Angela Terry Start Date: August 27, 2003 Location: Los Angeles Production Companies: 20th Century Fox Television and Mutant Enemy Network: WB Network

Okay, I have more....
Spike and Fred are getting closer She is real worried about him fading out, and is working like a gal possessed to find a solution.
Ahem, there is a shower scene... oooh! But Fred is oblivious and Spike is just trying to communicate. He writes in the steam on the mirror. Awww!
That nasty ghostie is taunting Spike, well, they all do... And... we get nekkid Spike, Spike in a dress, and nekkid Spike Um, I guess he didn't get the no gratuitous flesh shots written into his contract after all.... But it is not nice, why he is nekkid, and why he is in a dress
And.... dundundun.... Spike saves Fred! And he does this just as he could have a chance of getting solid again... so all noble, and back to the drawing board for getting the bod!
But Fred.... she say he is worth saving - YAYAYAYAYAY!! Someone likes Spike! At last! Finally! And hypocrite that I am, I am now a Fred fan
Angel and Spike - They were actually seeming to get on, little bit of gentle banter.... Angel likes William's verse, but as Spike points out Angel likes Manilow - hehehehe!
Do you likee the sound of this ep?! Huh, huh?! ;D

Here is Tensai's summary of the ep, from www.spoilerslayer.com/archives/002399.phpEpisode Title looks to be 'Hell Bound'. Angel: Hell Bound
The episode has a Halloween-theme, with what seems to be several spirits trapped at Wolfram and Hart coming out to play. Their interest seems to be mainly in Spike, who himself is obviously a spirit in the material world.
The episode opens with night falling on Wolfram and Hart, where a few associates grumble about 'Mr. Good Fang' and Fred heads to her lab. It appears that she's investigating the amulet. The next bit is Spike in the offices, hearing a woman crying somewhere. He finds the spirit of a young woman from the turn of the century (err, not Y2K). She asks Spike to hold her because something is coming and then passes through him and vanished.
There is another scene, where Angel confesses that he liked Spike's poetry. In this scene, Spike is being haunted by the spirit of a hanged man. But, much like Angel's visions in 'Amends', Spike is the only one who can see him.
Later, the 'Fang Gang' has gathered in a conference room confused because the can't find any ghosts (except for Spike). While they are discussing this, Spike is being taunted by the spirit of an armless woman. She tells Spike that "it's" coming for him. Spike begs Fred to help him, as he vanishes once again.
Spike ends up, where else, in the basement (even he's not surprised). He's followed one spirit, only to discover another. It's a young woman with a shard of glass through one eye. She tells him that the Reaper's going to come for him. That takes the glass shard out and slashes him across the cheek with it. It actually cuts him.
We then turn to Fred's lab, where she's furiously researching. Spike is there, but Fred can't see him. Spike must do something that Fred recognizes, because later Angel is insisting that Spike is gone. The mystics at Wolfram and Hart also can no longer detect him. Fred disagrees, stating that she knows what she felt, and she's trying to find a way to contact him before he's gone for good.
Cut to an office later that night. Eve has brought in a psychic, Claire, who's going to conduct a seance. Spike is in the room, at while at first it seems she's made contact with him, she's actually discovered something much worse. What's behind Spike's torment, the Reaper. It possesses Claire and ends up killing her. There is some brief consideration that Spike might have been behind that, but it's quickly dismissed.
Fred heads off to take a shower (her outfit fell victim to Claire's bloody demise). Spike appears in the bathroom and is able to concentrate enough to write the word 'Reaper' into the steam on mirror. (and I'm going to be honest, it really does appear that they are looking to pair up Spike and Fred). As Fred notices it, the mirror cracks and a shadowy form rushes at Spike and pushes him through the wall.
Spike appears in the lobby, He sees a lawyer, but it turns out to be another spirit. Spike begins to undergo attacks ala 'Hellraiser'. Nails, Stakes, lots of pain. As it reaches a climax, Spike's tormenter appears. It's a creature that calls itself Pavayne.
Elsewhere, the 'Fang Gang' seems to have a handle on what's going on. Something exists in Wolfram and Hart that feeds on spirits. That's why they couldn't detect any spirits other than Spike, and Wolfram and Hart should be overflowing with spirits of the dead. Essentially, Pavayne is the cleanup crew for the building. He cleans up the loose spirits, sending them to hell. There is an extensive scene with Pavayne showing that he can distort reality, with the various spirits (illusions of Pavayne) taunting and tormenting Spike, and Spike coming to a realization of what Pavayne is and what lies ahead for himself.
Fred is driving herself to the edge with her research, making the others wonder if she's gone Pylea-mad again. She hasn't, but she's determined to do whatever it takes to save Spike. Not only that, but she's managed to figure out a way to make him corporeal. In the meantime, Spike has begun to understand a bit of Pavayne's power. He's not just a janitor, he's a spirit himself, who figured out a way to stay out of Hell. As Spike and Pavayne spar, Fred activates the device that will bring Spike back. Unfortunately, Spike has momentarily left the room and Pavayne goes after Fred.
As Pavayne strangles Fred, Spike reappears. He has a difficult decision to make, he can either save Fred, or he can become flesh again. He pushes Pavayne away from Fred, and into the area of effect for the machine. Which explodes as Pavayne becomes flesh and blood, and the 'Fang Gang' steps in to clean up. Spike warns Angel not to kill him, as it will only make Pavayne a spirit again.
As the show wraps, Fred and Spike are talking in her lab as she disposes of the remains of her gadget. Spike's acting as if it's all right that he's still a ghost, learned a few things, like how to pick things up with some effort. Fred makes a comment that he's worth saving (and I don't think there is any denying that they are playing up Spike/Fred).
The episode ends on a very dark note, as we discover that Angel has caged Pavayne in much the same way Connor caged him. Locked away in the basement, Pavayne will spend eternity in a metal box, unable to do anything but look out through a small peephole. Fade to blackWhen the sides were first breaking I didn't realise Spike's torment was quite so intense and ... nasty. For fuck's sake, hasn't he been tortured enough?!

Bub's sides summary from F4F. Don't forget, all this info is gleaned from chunks of script where new characters are involved, not from a complete script.
In the teaser, it’s the end of the day at W&H. A couple of lawyers are complaining a bit about Angel’s new policies. Fred is going through some scientific papers. The camera stalks her as she goes into the lab, which has a lot of equipment and mystical stuff on it, including Spike’s amulet. She whirls around, seeming to sense something, and when she turns back, Spike is standing right there. Fred screams unconvincingly and drops her papers. *****
Spike is walking down a hallway, and the lights are going out one by one, leaving him in darkness. There’s the sound of a woman crying. He sees her – she’s wearing a white dress from around the 1890’s, and holding herself. Annoyed, Spike asks why she lured him there. She asks her to hold him, and reaches for him, but her arms have been severed at the elbow. The woman advances on Spike, saying that it is coming…and then suddenly flies at him. She disappears before she hits him.
Angel is in his private elevator, checking balance sheets. Spike appears and asks him what’s on the agenda. Angel frowns and the doors open, and Spike follows Angel into…(no idea).
*****
Angel and Spike are talking, and Angel says he never told anyone this, but he really liked Spike’s poems. Spike snarks back that Angel likes Barry Manilow, and Angel smiles a bit. The light moment is interrupted, though, when Spike sees a hanging man with a plastic bag over his head. Angel doesn’t see it, but the hanging man whispers that it’s coming for you….The man disappears, and Spike shakes it off, but when he turns back, the man is right behind Angel. Spike just looks at the man in horror, but Angel remains oblivious.
*****
Gunn and Eve inform Angel that there are no ghosts. Spike is stunned, but Gunn says that Spike is the only non-corporeal entity in the building. The armless woman is staring at Spike from across the room, again saying it’s coming for him. Spike says to check again, they’re really there, something is happening. The woman appears right in front of Spike, and says “it’s here”, before disappearing. Spike turns back to Fred, desperate, but then flickers out.
***** Spike is in the basement, and there’s an eerie chopping sound. Spike says he’s already played through this, a second time isn’t going to rattle him. He approaches a table under a bare bulb, and there’s a bloody butcher knife with some chopped off fingers. They twitch around a bit.
A woman emerges from the dark, saying that it hurts. She’s a lovely, 1940’s professional, but she has a huge piece of glass sticking out of her eye. Spike quips that he imagines it would. She giggles, and Spike says that it’s good that she can laugh about it, though. The woman sing-songs that it is going to get him, that the Reaper is going to take him. Spike laughs, thinking she’s talking about the Grim Reaper. Spike says he slipped through the cracks somehow, and the woman rips the glass out of her eye, saying she hasn’t forgotten him, and slashes his cheek open with the glass before disappearing.
Spike’s shocked…she actually hurt him physically. A disembodied voice laughs.
Fred is wandering about the lab, scribbling notes and checking things and mumbling to herself, a bit Pylea-like. Spike looks at her sadly, the cut still on his cheek.
*****
Angel is gently telling Fred that the mystics did another sweep, and Spike’s gone. She says she knows what she felt, and they have to find a way to contact him before he’s *really* gone.
Angel, Gunn, Wes, and Fred are sitting around a conference table. Wes says perhaps they should reconsider, and Gunn says these things always turn out ugly. Even enters with a beautiful woman named Claire, and Gunn looks smitten. Claire says she’s heard they have a ghost, and Fred tries to explain no. not technically, but Claire doesn’t care.
Claire and Eve sit down at the table, and Claire says she has pilates class early in the morning, so she wants to hurry this along. She says that they need to clear their minds, which from the looks of them, shouldn’t be hard. Angel wonders if the insults cost extra, and Fred asks if they need to hold hands.
Claire says not unless she’s lonely. She starts doing her thing, and then says she senses a presence. Spike pops up next to her and says damn right she does! He says to get him out of there. Claire starts talking about the dark soul, and suffering, and Spike starts getting annoyed. She says it’s coming, and Spike snaps that he’s already there! Then a shadow flickers past the windows…she doesn’t mean him. Spike yells at her to tell them it’s the Reaper, but as she starts to say the word, she starts to choke and convulse. Gunn and Fred want to know what’s going on, and Wes says he has a hold of her. Claire’s nose drips blood, and Angel tells Spike to stop it. Spike says it’s not him, and suddenly the convulsions stop. Fred leans in to ask if Claire is okay, and is splattered with vomited blood for her effort.
Angel covers Claire’s body with a sheet. Gunn wants to know why Spike would do that, and Wes says that he wouldn’t, there would be no advantage in hurting someone who was trying to help him.

Bub's summary continued...
Fred is showering, and Spike is in the room. He absently puts his hand on the glass, and it leaves a little mark. Surprised, Spike tries again, and this time his hand passes through. Concentrating, and with a lot of effort, he begins to write one word. The word forms, but Fred doesn’t see it. She steps out of the shower, and then sees the word, written backwards on the glass. “Reaper”. The glass cracks, and Spike catches a glimpse of something rushing at him before he’s thrown through the wall.
Spike drops from the ceiling into a hallway. He gets up, and something is coming up the stairs. Spike says to quit hiding, but it turns out to be a mousy little lawyer guy, and Spike laughs, relieved. Until the lawyer turns to Spike, smiling as he walks past, and his face is partially covered in blood. “William…” the lawyer whispers…
*****
Nails and stakes are being driven into Spike. He’s writhing in pain as a man’s voice is talking about how Spike will suffer for eternity, but first he gets to play. The man finally reveals himself – tall and thin, dressed like a 1700’s aristocrat, creepy (Pavayne). He produces a scalpel, and says he’ll get started.
*****
Angel is telling Wes he doesn’t get all the W&H ghosts. Wes says there aren’t any. Angel says that’s the point – it’s high-risk employment, the place should be teeming with ghosts. Gunn wonders if Pavayne has been munching on them, and Fred says that whatever he’s doing to them, they need to get Spike back before he’s next.
In Fred’s lab, Spike crawls along the floor, all cut up. Pavayne says the vampire soul is fun to watch struggling, more fun than the others. Spike tells him to go to hell, and Pavayne says that’s Spike’s journey, not his. He raises the scalpel again, and the lights go on in Fred’s office. Pavayne laughs, saying how sweet it is that the pretty thing is still trying to save Spike, all that passion…maybe he’ll have a taste sometime. That pisses Spike off, and he tries to hit Pavayne, but his fist passes through him. Pavayne says that in this place, the rules are his.
They’re now back in the basement. Pavayne says reality bends to his desire, and then pops off. Spike creeps around, looking for him, and saying that it was him…Spike’s not just fading away, it’s Pavayne’s doing that people can’t see him anymore. Pavayne says it is all parlor tricks. The glass woman appears, and Spike’s wounds disappear before the woman vanishes again.
Pavayne says there is nothing here without the will, and suddenly Spike’s back in front of the table with the knife and fingers. Not the voice, not the body, not the clothes Spike thinks he wears. The hanging man appears again, saying it’s the mind’s final gasp. Then the bloody lawyer, saying it’s easily pried away. Spike is suddenly naked and alone. Pavayne’s voice laughs, and taunts Spike, saying he was a scourge and destroyer, but if one scratches the surface….Spike is suddenly wearing a dress. The armless woman appears, calling him a nancy, crying for his mother, and then disappears. Pavayne’s voice says he knows all the things Spike has done, and how he fell in love, and got himself a soul, and now he thinks he’s superior. The other ghosts appear, saying it doesn’t matter, hell still waits and sees who Spike really is. And Spike is naked again.
Pavayne says all the ghost played on the ground where his blood was spilled, and Spike wonders if Pavayne killed them. He says no, they all died here at W&H. Spike begins to figure it out, saying that the spirits hung on, trying to keep from falling into hell, until Pavayne gave them a push. Pavayne says they are burning forever now, just like Spike will. The ghosts advance on him. Spike says that it has to be a trick, they can’t be both in hell and here. Pavayne says they are real enough, and the faceless ghost sticks the butcher knife into Spike’s chest. Spike screams and collapses, but then the knife and the wound are gone. Spike still feels it, though. Pavayne laughs, saying that hell hungers for the wicked, and the ghosts tear into Spike.
Fred is scribbling furiously on the walls. Wes seems a bit concerned but Fred says no, she just ran out of white board, she’s not crazy again. Supposedly, what she’s doing will bring Spike back. Angel says fine, first they’ll get him back, then they will concentrate on Pavayne.
*****
Spike falls through another ceiling, and lands hard. Pavayne says Spike seems to have learned some of his tricks. Spike starts to get up, but Pavayne kicks him halfway across the lobby, saying that in this realm, he’s God. We hear a power surge from Fred’s contraption, and Pavayne looks up in surprise. Spike slams Pavayne to the floor, and rushes through the closest wall.
Fred announces that Spike is there, and Angel and Gunn stand well away from the recorporealizing thingy. Fred yells for Spike to get inside the metal circle on the floor. Wes says the contraption is destabilizing, and Fred urges Spike to hurry, they only have one shot at this. Suddenly, Fred convulses in pain – it wasn’t Spike in the room, but Pavane. He clutches Fred’s throat. Spike appears, and Pavyane tells him it’s either corporeality or the girl, he can’t have both. Spike looks at the ring hopefully, but does nothing. Pavayne thinks he’s caving, but Spike smashes Pavayne into the circle. He’s flesh again. And he’s furious, yelling abut how he’ll feast on everyone…until Angel decks him. Spike warns Angel not to kill him, because they can’t let him become a spirit again. Angel says he’ll just do a lot of bruising.
Fred drops her broken equipment into the trash, exhausted. Gunn asks if she’s okay.
*****
Spike and Fred are talking, and Spike is wondering if it’s because he’s handsome and brightens the place up. Fred says Spike is worth saving. He’s touched. He says he doesn’t have it so bad – lots of room and good company, and he’s learned some new stuff. He picks up her coffee mug, and she laughs happily. Spike says there are worse things than being a ghost.
Pavayne is strapped to some sort of steel container, wires and tubes keeping him paralyzed. Eve tells Angel that it’s permanent storage. Angel tells Pavayne congratulations, he gets to live forever…though he cant move, touch, feel, or affect anything. But at least he had them give Pavayne a window. He seals Pavayne in, and says “Welcome to hell.”

nightnurse Spike's Consort Re: Ats S5 - Spoilers and Speculation « Reply #73 on: Aug 21st, 2003, 4:43pm » OOH, excellent detective work PK, can't wait!! I'll try to find out when we get to see the eps here. ******************* twistedspike Big Bad Re: Ats S5 - Spoilers and Speculation « Reply #74 on: Aug 21st, 2003, 4:57pm » OMG this ep sounds amazing. Looks like James is getting alot more air time than I expected. Ok they're not treating him too well all the time but it looks like the Angel gang are accepting him a lot quicker than the scooby gang ever did. Hmm don't know how to take the Spike/Fred pairing but if she treats him ok that's fine with me. Do you think they'll make him corporeal before he goes off to do Italian Heat or leave it till he comes back. I know he's filming all his Angel scenes before he goes but wont he have more to do when he's solid. oops that sounds a lot naughtier when I read it than it did when I typed it Sky usually start showing the new eps in January. Then because we don't have breaks like the US we usually catch up with them and end up only being a couple of eps behind. ******************** tactile Human Re: Ats S5 - Spoilers and Speculation « Reply #73 on: Aug 21st, 2003, 8:36pm » This sounds like the best epsiode yet. Lots for James to get his acting teeth into...I'm really looking forward to it.. God I hope Season 5 airs no later than January in the UK. Having to make do with clips and spoilers and other peoples reviews is a killer. I know I could download the episode of course, but I won't, like to see my first full airing on ..Go figure..

There's a very detailed summary available now for episode 4... Contact me if you haven't found it Anyway, pretty much what we had already had from the sides, but the Spikey torment distressed me more, there was no mention of the dress, just the nekkid, and Angel is a big mean ugly... sorry, sorry. Letting my prejudices show again! But the little poetry/Manilow moment is still there so not all BadAngel And if anything, Fred comes out of the summary even more saintly in my eyes than in the sides

www.spoilerslayer.com/archives/002426.phpHell Bound Summary (Courtesy of Eljay)
The episode opens on closing time at W&H, as we follow Fred to her lab. There Fred feels a presence and scans the lab looking for someone or something, but nothing is there. She turns back to her research and -poof-, Spike is right there. Fred tries to act surprised and scared, but Spike doesn't buy her reaction. She admits that she knew he was following her since the lobby.
Fred has been doing research on Spike the past few weeks, trying to figure out why he's popping in and out of existence. Spike is trying to be nonchalant about the whole business, but he's concerned that he doesn't have much time left. Fred promises that she will do her best, although it won't be like a Shanshu where she can make him human. Spike has no idea what she's talking about, so she explains about the prophecy relating to Angel. Spike continues to banter with Fred while she runs tests on him, until he leans on a lab table and falls right through it -- and the floor. Spike discovers himself in familiar territory, a basement. He hears something in the distance, and finds a man cutting something at a table. Spike moves closer, to discover the man is cutting the fingers off his left hand. Then suddenly, the man is gone and Spike is alone once again.
Fred goes to see Wes in his office, with a list of some books she needs -- some very esoteric books at that. Wes is happy to help, but is also a bit concerned at the effort she is going to. Fred assures him that she's fine as she rushes out of the office and into Eve. Eve asks if she's got a moment. In Angel's office, Angel says he's concerned with Fred's drive to restore Spike. Eve definitely does not appear to like the idea, even hinting that she'd rather be rid of him entirely. Fred understands Eve's reasoning, but she can't understand why Angel doesn't care more. Especially since Spike is just like Angel -- a souled-vampire-champion. Angel does not like the comparison, because he knows Spike better than anyone. He thinks Fred is falling for Spike's charms. She agrees that he may be playing her a bit, but that's not why she wants to help him. She feels it is the right thing to do.
Spike is wandering the halls of W&H, where he hears a woman crying in the distance. He finds a young woman, who asks her to hold him. As he comes closer, he discovers that she has no arms. She lunges at him and then vanishes. Spike heads off to find Angel. Spike pretends to be there because he's bored, but Angel can sense that something isn't right. They get into an argument/discussion about hell dimensions, being a champion, and prophecies. But Angel backs off a bit and tells him that he liked his poetry. Spike makes a crack about how much that means based on Angel's taste in music -- then sees a man swinging from a noose on the other side of the room. But Angel sees nothing.
Angel summons everyone to his office, where Angel and Spike fill them in on the details about the spirits. Nobody else -- even the W&H security team -- can sense or see the spirits. Suddenly, Spike vanishes while talking to them. Problem is, he's still there. The others head off to look for him, leaving Spike alone and perplexed. He figures that he's finally falling into hell, and then an eerie voice speaks -- telling him that his assumption is correct.
Spike challenges the voice, but gets no response. He sees something in the distance and follows it off into the darkness of the building. It leads Spike to the basement. He discovers the table again, but all that remains are the knife and the fingers -- still wriggling. Spike hears something and turns to find a woman standing there -- with a shard of glass in her eye. She tells Spike that the Reaper is going to get him, then pulls out the shard of glass and slashes Spike. She vanishes as Spike discovers that he's actually been cut.

continued:
Back in Fred's laboratory, a shaken Spike observes Fred pushing herself to her research limits. He's saying goodbye and thanks for trying to help, even though she can't hear him, since he figures there isn't much time... Suddenly, she has a *Eureka* moment, and Spike, relieved, taunts hell that he's not going there after all. Except, a moment later, Fred realizes that her *Eureka* will destroy half of LA, so not really of the good. Frustrated, she decides her research is going nowhere and that she's going to give up. Spike pleads with her to change her mind (not that she can hear him of course), and in his desperation, he reaches out to touch her on the arm -- and then recoils in shock. He touched her. She felt it too, and guesses it was Spike. Angel shows up, and she tells him that Spike is still around, no matter what the scanners at W&H say, and they've got to find him.
In the conference room, Eve enters with one of the mediums, Claire. Claire is pretty straight-forward, not really relying on the rituals one would expect with a séance. Claire and the others sit around the table and try to contact Spike. Claire seems to at first, sense Spike. But as she gets more uncomfortable, Spike realizes it's not him, but the reaper. It attacks and kills Claire in a fairly messy way. Gunn thinks that Spike did this, but Wes doesn't see why he would have. There must be something worse than Spike roaming the halls of W&H.
Spike returns to Fred's lab, where she is in the shower washing off Claire's blood. Fred realizes that the other spirit killed Claire, because it's hiding something. Spike discovers that with considerable effort, he can write 'Reaper' in the steam on the mirror. Fred discovers this, just as a spirit attacks Spike and pushes him through the wall. Spike is surrounded by all the spirits he saw previously, and he begins to experience -- in his mind -- what hell will be like. The torture of Spike reaches its peak as his tormenter reveals himself. The spirit explains that Spike is going to hell -- but first he gets to play.
The others are trying to discover what spirit killed Claire. The only thing they have to go on is the reference Claire made to 'The Dark Soul'. Unfortunately, there are too many entries in the books. Fred walks in and tells them to add the word 'Reaper' to the search, which comes up with a single hit -- Pavayne. Pavayne was a doctor in the 1700's, who was called 'The Reaper' by some of his more unfortunate patients. Hunted by the authorities, Pavayne fled to California, where he continued his misdeeds until W&H arrived on the scene. In order to open their new branch, they needed a sacrifice of evil blood to prepare the way, and Pavayne was the best candidate for the job. The others figure out why W&H isn't filled with spirits as it should be -- given the precarious nature of employment at the firm.. Pavayne is getting rid of them.
Meanwhile, a bloody Spike is being tormented by Pavayne in Fred's lab. Spike tries to fight back, but it's Pavayne that controls reality. The scene shifts again to the basement and Spike realizes that he's not really gone, Pavayne has shifted him out of the other's reality. Everything that Spike has seen or felt, is all an illusion created by Pavayne. Pavayne tells Spike that he only thinks he's better than the other spirits, because he fell in love and got a soul. In the end, he's still going to hell, and Pavayne's going to help him get there, just as he helped the others.
Fred continues to research frantically in her lab, assuring the others that she hasn't gone Pylea-mad again. She has figured out a way to make Spike flesh again, but there's just one minor problem. They need a huge source of dark energy to make it work. Gunn comes up with a solution and he heads off with Angel head to the White Room. Angel is skeptical about the plan, even more so when he sees what form the new conduit has taken -- he's not a cat-person. Nor is he pleased with the connection that Gunn and the Conduit have.
In the basement, Pavayne reveals hell to Spike and is about to push him in. Spike agrees that he's going to hell, just not today, as he hits Pavayne and sends him across the room. He's figured out Pavayne's secret -- spirits can affect reality if they want it badly enough. As Spike and Pavayne start to battle through the W&H offices, Fred is putting the finishing touches on her machine. But they only have one shot, as the Conduit will not give them any more energy. As the battle between Spike and Pavayne reaches a head in the lobby, Fred activates the device. Pavayne feels it and heads off to the lab, with Spike in hot pursuit. Fred detects a presence and tells Spike to step into the rune-covered circle that is part of the machine. Fred suddenly clutches at her throat, just as Claire did -- the spirit in the room is not Spike.
They try to intervene, but are knocked aside by an invisible force, and can only look on in horror as Fred is being killed. Spike arrives in the lab and Pavayne taunts him with the decision he has to make. He can become flesh or save Fred. For Spike, the decision is an easy one. He knocks Pavayne back into the circle -- and into reality. The others rush Pavayne. Angel's about to kill Pavayne, but Spike warns Angel to keep him alive. Otherwise, he'll just become a spirit again. Angel settles for beating the crap out of him. In the short term.
Later, Wes and Gunn help clean up Fred's lab as she heads back to her office and relaxes for the first time in days. Spike appears, saying he doesn't suppose she can build another machine. Unfortunately, not only were most of the parts irreplaceable, but she has no idea how they could ever obtain another power source. Spike tells her it's okay; he's happy with the choice he made. She offers to try something else, but Spike tells her no. He doesn't want to end up like Pavayne, he doesn't want to risk anyone else just to make him real. Fred tells him that it just shows that she was right and the others were wrong -- Spike is worth saving.
We end in the basement of W&H, in a secret storage area. We discover Pavayne enclosed in a metal coffin, with just his face exposed. Angel looks on, as Eve explains that W&H will have no problem keeping him alive and immobile forever. Angel says at least he provided him with a window. Angel closes the coffin and welcomes Pavayne to hell. Then we hear a door shut leaving Pavayne to nothing but...

OMFG! The trailer had frickin' warnings in it! About nudity and graphic content...! Never seen that on a Buffy or Angel ep, even Wrecked. Of course my parents happened to be watching then... And my mom started to say something about it, then caught herself and said, "Oh yeah. You're of age." In the trailer there was Spike with shoulders bare, but that's all they showed... more to come(!)...? ;D

You know, I think it is cheap and nasty of them to be promoting the show in this way. Oooh, a chance of naked Spike flesh... the girlies will tune in in droves, because hey, they don't care if we fuck over the character of Spike, so long as they see flesh and cross dressing - for fuck's sakes!! I gather there was female nudity in ep 3, weregirl, but were there warnings prior to that?! Were there warnings about the gruesome bits in episode 2?

I gather there was female nudity in ep 3, weregirl, but were there warnings prior to that?! Were there warnings about the gruesome bits in episode 2? Not sure if those where rhetorical questions or not, so I'll go ahead and answer. No, there were no warnings other than the usual TV14 rating. What they showed of weregirl was like Spike in Wrecked - bare thigh from the side. She was laying down on her side, with her arms were covering her chest, and her legs positioned just right. Like I said, similar to Wrecked!Spike... I don't remember seeing anything extremely gross in the ep, unlike the pics/trailers I've seen from "Hellbound" which show the guy cutting his fingers off and the girl with the thing in her eye. I'm not sure how much Nekkid!Spike there will be. As it is American television, there won't be any parts, and probably not even arse, so I'm not sure what the warnings were for... Just big hype to get us to watch... using their "Shiny Blond Thing" as marketing... Poor James/Spike. Though if you were watching the trailer, you were probably already watching the show...

Never forget that they are in a ratings war and their survival will depend on at least maintaining the levels set at the beginning of the season. The suits and people like David Fury think Spike is only a popular character because he has bared flesh and looks good, so that is what they are pandering to now. We're all serial killer lovers afterall. The promo wil be shown all week, won't it? And the WB put it up on their site too. I happen to like ghoulish gory stuff, but blokes chopping off their fingers, women sticking shards of glass in their eyes... not exactly mainstream and a bit more "hardcore" than Angel has been before, I reckon! ;D

WoW! I just watched the promo for "Hellbound", and while the PTB were shameless in their Viewers Discretion warning, the trailer is damn good and inviting enough without them needing to juice it up! Spooky or what?! Yay!

The translation is a little off but Slayerverse came up with the first "wildfeed" summary of the ep. It still sounds as good as we had been led to believe. Spike trying to thank Fred for her attempts to help him, even though she can't hear him, make me sniffle.... www.slayerverse.de/tanet/net_buffy_us/?navi=news.php&id=2735

What's with this site's thing for the phrase "completely nude"... they use it to describe Fred in the shower (she's showering... of course she'll have no clothes on!) and Spike in the basement... I guess they took that Spike wearing a dress part out...? I set my VCR last night... hopefully it will tape properly, as I don't think this is one I want to try to watch at work with my dad hanging over my shoulder... but I'll of course post my commentary on it after I watch it...

Yep, no sign of the dress... Fred's nudity was the shower scene, in which we saw her bare shoulders. Spike's was like "Wrecked", in which we saw bare thigh, but his legs were positioned "just right" (or wrong, depending on your point of view ) so you couldn't see anything... The cutting off fingers thing was pretty gross, and the woman with the glass in her eye was semi gross, but I didn't think these things were worth all the warnings they gave in the trailer last week... definitely an exaturation for publicity... Spike discovered if he wanted it bad enough, he could touch things (Fred, that evil dude, mirror, coffee cup), and apparently he can also make the couch sag when he sits on it, cast a shadow, and have noisy footsteps... they're getting a bit sloppy on the editing of those kinds of things... James must've been at day 9 of the bleach cycle, because there were a bit of roots showing. And it may be my imagination, or perhaps the bit of bleach still on them, but the roots looked kinda gray... some very nice facial expressions from James... There were some nice quotes from Spike that I wanted to post, but as it was finished over 2 hours ago, I've forgotten... there was that hint of Spike/Angel slash again, about them being together, etc. Fred says that Spike's worth saving... aww... I'll post my stuff on next week's trailer in that thread...
