Heh, I'll have to pass that on ...he'll be thrilled anyone thinks he's gorgeous He thinks you're all very nice ladies , and remembered Dee Dee from the Guilty Pleasures disco and said how nice it was to see her again , but he's very much spoken for I'm afraid ;D I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by unplugged Blue Gillespie ...I much prefer their mellower sound . The Smoke Fairies sang beautifully with some stunning harmonies , but yes, they really do need to expand their repertoire and include some songs that don't sound much the same as the previous ones ! You can tell that James adores playing the UC , it really is a special venue and the quality accoustics seem to give his songs extra shades that you may not have heard in some of the other venues he's played . I hadn't realised just how many songs he sang When you think back to when he first started performing solo , there were just 12 songs to choose from ( with long introductions and in-between patter to fill the time ) , his repertoire has certainly grown some , and he can easily fill up an hour plus and still have several songs spare ! ;D

OK - here it is - the first Rosie Ramble..
ROSIE GOES TO SEE JAMES – UNION CHAPEL 1ST MAY 2009
The Union Chapel is such a great venue – fabulous acoustics and a good view wherever you sit – ok the pews are hard, but who notices when there’s James to look at and listen to?
I had to work Thursday night so drove up to London on Friday morning – dropped my stuff off at my sister's house in the depths of north London suburbia and took a quick tube ride to Highbury and Islington, arriving at about 12.30pm There was already about 15 people in the queue, including Kelly who had saved me a spot, so I joined her. It was nice weather so no real hardship to sit ands chat for all the intervening hours.
Patti was at the head of the queue so I gave her her birthday present – the new James picture which I had got him to personalise for her at Elf fair the week before. She was very pleased (to put it mildly!) and kept hugging me every time she saw me after that! Also able to catch up with various other people in the queue as it kept getting longer and longer.
At least there are several places to eat nearby, even if one of them is MacDonald’s – not my first choice but needs must….. ! A few JM Live people were about saying hello, but the queue was pretty good at self policing. Quite a few people stopped to ask what we were queuing for and we were quite happy to tell them. I had met Erykah and Nicky who were organising the “This is the James Marsters Queue” game on Sunday and had got a nice BIG badge with it on so that helped with the explaining!
At some point mid afternoon, James (with guitar case) and Steve etc were all spotted arriving, walking across the road like they had all just come from the tube (which it turned out they had!) and came past the head of the queue – I didn’t see them (curses!) but others did. I went over to Starbucks to get my afternoon cup of tea (and use the facilities…) and met Jean and Jill in there. I told them that James had arrived, and with perfect synchronicity they both asked me in unison “What was he wearing?”
I couldn’t tell them as I hadn’t seen him, but when I asked Patti and Team Brit at the front of the queue, none of them could tell me either – they were too busy looking at his face!
Time passed very quickly really, with lots of people to talk to – I managed to get a shot of Steve Salchi fast asleep in the queue – so then we put a McDonald’s cup in front of him and I made a sign saying “James Marsters fan. Please give generously” but he woke up before we could get him to earn us any money….
Eventually the queue was able to move up to the chapel doors (as long as we left everyone’s front door clear, and then we were allowed in. Kelly and I zoomed down the front and as I don’t like being straight on for photographs, sat in the third row just to the left hand side. I was able to go and buy my Capt John figure before the concert started and waved hello to Steve.
First up was the Smoke Fairies – I did like their ethereal sound, but wished I could hear the words better and they need a little more variation in pace (they had a very dry sense of humour when they talked between songs!)
Then we had Blue Gillespie-Unplugged – Gareth singing and the lead and bass guitar players. Let’s just say I am not going to be going to any Blue Gillespie gigs anytime soon - too much teenage-angsty type shouting for me. (And the bass player with only 3 strings? He could have had just one and I don’t think it would have mattered – there only seemed to be one chord anyway..!) (sorry PK - please dont ban me - its just my opinion!)
And then it was what we had all been waiting for… James! He came leaping onto the stage and my jaw dropped slightly at the sight of him in that little black vest! Very nice! There’s not an ounce of fat on him – it’s all nicely toned muscle and it was lovely to see it on display – chest, neck and arms – looked fabulous in that lighting. (Pity about the very obvious nicotine patches on each arm though, not even the transparent type – he really needs to put them somewhere less visible! Apparently a young girl in attendance was worried that he had hurt his arm - so her mum had to explain!)
Before he said anything else, James called out that he had to remember it was Patti’s birthday and he quickly looked for her. I so wasn’t expecting that right at the beginning that I nearly missed it, as did Patti!
James said he loved playing at the Union Chapel as he always sounded great there. He was playing Chow, the blue guitar again – and having introduced him and said how reliable he was, told how he had been given him by a fan and Stephen called out it was Shirley (Squirl). Kicked off with Don’t Worry Son and from then on it was just a fabulous concert. He does sound great there – the acoustics are wonderful and the atmosphere was great. There were quite a lot of newbies in the audience and they all seemed to love it. I was having a great time taking photographs and James was looking around at everyone a lot as he sang, deliberately catching people’s eyes – several times he looked straight into my camera. I loved the fact that I could see all that muscle definition in his chest and arms and the cords in his neck, made more obvious by the lighting. Gorgeous – got a few really nice arty close-up shots!
Not so much talking between songs – now he has enough material to fill the time, James says he doesn’t need to so much, which is a bit of a shame as I enjoy the chat as much as the singing! He did ask what the time was at one point as he said we all had to be out by 10.30pm…!
We had 21 songs – all James’s own, no covers. He did a clean version of For What I Need – no suggestive talky bit in the middle (Boo!) and said he missed Sullivan playing with him on Moonshot. And I am really getting to love Finer Than Gold, All That She Wanted and most of all Fall of Night – I just love the softness in James’s voice on that (and none of the three which I have on mp3 or CD anywhere! Need to do something about that!) And then James did his deliberate pulling out of the guitar lead to show he was going – but we knew he would be back! Everyone was quickly roaring and stamping their feet on the floor and the noise was huge! Surprised it didn’t register on the Richter scale..! And yes, James was soon back and we had 3 more songs as encores – Millionaire, Civilised Man and he finished on Angel - fabulous stuff. We were all on our feet at the end, yelling for more, and James said his bit about feeling all the love in the room with his hand on his heart, blew us a big kiss down the microphone and said he loved us all. And then he gave the set list to Patti and I was so pleased! I really hoped he would, as it was just perfect for her – now that’s what I call a birthday present!! Threw his water bottle and a few picks into the crowd (he never throws them anywhere near me!) and then he was gone.
It took a bit of a while to come down after that – it was so great. I photographed Patti with the set list – she was grinning from ear to ear and said James had looked her in the eye, smiled and said “Happy Birthday” as he handed it to her. So don’t expect any coherence from Patti for several months..!
We hung around a bit until they were trying to boot us out of the chapel – Gareth was around posing for a few pictures and Steve wanted to know why I wasn’t wearing my James dog tag (because I was wearing my For What I Need necklace) and it was all very friendly and fun and we were shouting out “see you tomorrow Steve” as we left.
There was about 8 of us wanting to eat, but everywhere was either not serving food or shut – so we ended up in McDonald’s again. Twice in one day – I won’t need to eat there again – well, ever really!! As I was last in the queue, I missed seeing James leaving again – the whole group walked past McD’s heading for the tube station – they really did go on the tube – Chow and all!! Then we were all going our various ways, but still all squeeing as there was the Marstersclass the next day!
As always seems to happen now – every time I hear him sing, James just sounds better and better. His confidence in his music and his singing just seems to grow all the time which is wonderful. He is singing all his own songs and confident to bring back some he hasn’t done for a while. He so needs to do another album! Soon!
