The Rift: London Torchwood Convention
The Rift, the world’s first all-Torchwood convention, will be held on Saturday 26 April 2008 at Porchester Hall in Central London.
The confirmed guest list includes series regulars Eve Myles (Gwen) and Gareth David Lloyd (Ianto); episode guest stars James Marsters (Captain John Hart) and Alan Dale (Copley); producer Richard Stokes; writers Chris Chibnall, James Moran and Cath Tregenna; and Doctor Who author Keith Topping. The price of admission includes question and answer sessions, a number of autographs and an evening concert by Marsters.
Marsters, who has appeared at a number of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel conventions, says he expects The Rift to have its own identity. “Buffy conventions have their own flavor. Back when I was young and [an attendee at] conventions for Star Trek, they had their own character. I suspect that a Torchwood event will have its own character. I suspect it’s going to be pretty cool, pretty intelligent and pretty randy.
“Frankly, we have three of the best writers from Torchwood and I think that the writers usually come up with the nastiest jokes during conventions and the most truthful comments. The fans get to learn more of what’s really going on behind the scenes.”
Some of the guests will be new to the convention scene, but Marsters says he doesn’t foresee having to act as a guide. “No, they’re Welsh!” he laughs. “They know what’s up. I think Eve’s going to take to it like a duck to water. Gareth has a very dry sense of humour…He’s going to do very well.”
This will be Marsters’ first convention appearance since the airing of his first Torchwood episode, which saw him in a passionate smooch with John Barrowman’s Captain Jack. Is he looking forward to the Q & As? “Hell, yeah!” he exclaims. “I can’t wait!”
Event organiser Steve Himber, who is producing The Rift with JM Live, says all the guests are really looking forward to it. “Eve Myles has been talking it up quite a bit, I understand, and James Moran is just downright giddy on his blog about the whole thing and being part of it. They’ve all been really supportive. I think they’ve been looking for something like this, to satisfy the hunger of the fandom.” dwscifi.com/features/1768-the-rift-london-torchwood-convention]DWScifi

THE RIFT
TAKE A BREAK The action won’t stop at the forthcoming London event, The Rift, but James, Eve and Gareth are looking forward to a few breaks during the day and a chance to catch up with fans. Each of the actors will hold one intimate meet and greet session, 20 minutes long, with refreshments with up to 10 lucky fans in a private setting. So that everyone who wants one of these tickets gets an equal chance, they will be allocated on a prize draw system. Put your name and number down at the merchandise table for the star/s of your choice and if your number is drawn, then £25 gets you the ticket. Entries are limited to one per person per meet and greet.
TORCHWOOD MAGAZINE Staff from Torchwood magazine will be attending The Rift where they will be answering fan questions, discussing the magazine and covering the event - please go and say hello. They will be reporting on the event so watch out for stories and photos of The Rift in a future issue.
QUESTION TIME Ask a probing, funny or entertaining question at any of The Rift's Q&A sessions and you could win a special goodie bag, courtesy of Torchwood magazine, as a spot prize. Get your thinking caps on and feel free to ask all and any burning questions you've always wanted to know the answers to. Don't be shy! Please remember that while you’re welcome to be cheeky in your questions that this is an all-ages audience. Questions and Answers sessions: Alan Dale, James Marsters, Eve Myles, Gareth Lloyd-David, Writers Panel, Behind the Scenes Panel and Actors Panel.
PHOTOS AND AUTOGRAPHS Photograph and autograph tickets will be on sale at The Rift. Photograph tickets for James, Eve and Gareth will cost £20 each. Autographs for the actors only, over and above the two included (one each with James and Gareth) will be between £10 and £20, depending on the individual. Autographs with all participating Torchwood behind the scenes staff are free within reason (i.e. please don’t ask Chris Chibnall to individually sign every DVD in your box set, he has to get round to everyone else too). While there will not be official photographs with the writers and producers, we’re sure if you ask them nicely they’ll be happy to be snapped as they hang out.
EVENT DETAILS Information about the event how to get there to the venue and queuing has now been added to the website www.jamesmarsterslive.com/therift/venue.shtml

Due to work commitments we regret that Cath Tregenna will not be able to join us at The Rift, but Gary Russell, Torchwood's script editor, will be stepping in to join in the fun.
Aw, no Cath. But yay, Gary Russell! Can someone ask him about the non-fiction TW book he's got in the works for later in the year, please? I'm really enjoying The Twilight Streets - yes, I'm actually reading one of those papery things known as novels ;D

I hope this is ok to post this in this thread. It breaks my heart but I can't afford to travel this year and have one Premium Rift ticket number 083 available for sale at cost and one Borderline Gig ticket available for sale at cost. I put the Premium Rift ticket on ebay (my first time trying to sell on ebay) initially asking for my cost in USD, but there have been no bids, so I reduced the price at a loss of $10.00 USD for me.

Thank you Pokerkitten! I think that worked, because I just sold my Rift ticket. I'm very sad that I cant' be there, but I'm relieved that someone can now benefit from my loss. I still have my Borderline Gig ticket available for sale, but I'm thinking if it doesn't sell it will make a nice souvenir because it is such a pretty green ticket with really nice shiny decals.

Glad you've sorted out the expensive one wistful. The Borderline is limited numbers and a Q&A isn't it? About time I started a thread for it, and your ticket can be advertised in there.

The Rift happens this Saturday, and perhaps the name we've chosen is a little too apt, because we're still in flux.
We're pleased to announce that Kai Owen, who plays the long-suffering Rhys, boyfriend and now husband of Gwen Cooper, will be joining us at The Rift. Kai replaces Alan Dale, who has had to withdraw due to other commitments. Kai will be answering fan questions from the stage and offering autographs and photographs with attendees on the same basis that Alan would have. Alan sends his apologies to you all - and he's also still sending the signed Spamalot prize for the free draw.
We can also reveal that that The Rift will have a world exclusive - scificollector.co.uk will be attending and showcasing their first Torchwood action figure sculpts, as approved by the BBC. These figures are still in development and thus we must ask that nobody photographs them - but if you attend, you'll be able to take a good look, and you'll also be able to put your name down in advance for the first orders. Scificollector will also be selling official merchandise from the series.
Other vendors at the event will be Fantom Films, pre-selling their audio tapes of H.P.Lovecraft stories read by Gareth David-Lloyd, and the Astral Gypsy, who draws brilliant manga portraits.
Less happily, Chris Chibnall has had to tell us that he will not be able to appear on Saturday due to pressure of work. However, we're working on another little treat instead for those attending.
For those of you who are primarily James Marsters fans and have not yet bought a ticket for The Rift, you can now buy evening-only concert tickets. These cover James's concert, party music and a cash bar. And possibly a little more.
Just a little note: no soft drinks or alcohol will be allowed in to the venue, but you can still bring in food.
