Rosie Goes to See James in Los Angeles – Grand Slam at Burbank Marriott Hotel Part 1 Saturday 12th April I had a good start to the day (despite being awake from 3.30-5.30am – still on UK time – and was texting home for some normality!) At breakfast – Willie, the UK dealer I met in the taxi here from the airport asked me if I would like to get his 3 pictures of James signed for him as he wasn’t bothered to meet him. Is the Pope Catholic?? Do bears shit in the woods?? ;D Of course I said yes! Which meant I could do his today and mine tomorrow giving me longer to talk (and later on, Willie said he would buy all the Smallville cast autographs that I got as complimentary signings for $10 each – so I made $40 and that went towards another photo op ticket…..! ;D) I spent far longer getting ready than I would normally ever do for anything – it was like getting ready for a really special date (who am I kidding – it IS a special date!) I spent ages on my hair and face – and would you believe it? My skin has been clear for weeks and today I had 2 spots come up on my chin! Argh! Just typical – did my best to hide them. James was getting there at noon to start with autographs – and he did! Because I was doing Willies pictures for him, I had much higher number tickets and they were calling them in order, so had to wait for a bit. I was getting very excited as I got to the top of the queue and could actually see James. He is looking good – his hair has been cut (thank goodness – no more poodle head! – he has been doing Smallville this week so they were bound to cut it) and he’s got a bit of a tan. And he is still looking thin. He was wearing a long sleeved grey t shirt, dark jeans (someone said it was a relief to see he finally had some new ones!) and trainers. Later, he put a white shirt over the top. I discovered I wasn’t allowed to take pictures in the queue (oops, but got about 3) and did manage to leave the video running on the little camera as I got to him. He was being very lively and laughing (I love his laugh – so distinctive!) and waving his arms about as usual. Then it was finally my turn. I got that piercing James look, right in the eye and that devastating smile as he shook my hand and said ‘hello’ – what is it about the way he says hello that makes my knees turn to goo?? – and being James he is off talking straight away as he signed. I said I had come from England just to see him – and he said he’d come from Canada (Vancouver) just to se me! (cue that gorgeous laugh) then he said he had lost his passport for 5 days and finally found it yesterday! He was going crazy looking for it. – I remarked it was a good thing as we would have been very disappointed if he couldn’t make it to the UK in 2 weeks. He said he was definitely coming! Then I told him about writing the dances to 2 of his songs and how I was getting my classes interested in his music – he did listen and was pleased to hear it. I managed not to giggle nervously too much and speak slowly – but how I managed it whilst James is looking at me and smiling, I don’t know. Up close he is so much better looking than any picture ever really shows – he’s so very very pretty and gorgeous! So then it was back out and much drooling generally and waiting to do the photo ops at 3pm. I discovered the lady I was sat next to in the auditorium was none other than Magie from JMConAps board – who said she was going and wanted to meet up. I had a really good seat – first row behind the Gold ticket holders, so in 7th row, right in the centre, one in from the aisle. The lovely lady on the aisle seat – who wore a different Star Trek costume every day! – said I could sit there whilst James was on stage doing Q and A, so would make it easier for pics. I had a very hasty lunch, and when I came back, they were doing an auction of loads of exclusive stuff, pictures and clothing and big PVC vinyl banners. It wasn’t till the one with Spike came up that I thought about it – then thought “Sod it – got to spend the divorce money on something!” so stuck my hand up and joined in the bidding and won it for $275 plus a ticket to get it signed tomorrow. It’s HUGE – about 5 feet square, if not bigger. It’s going to have to fold up in my suitcase. There was a Brainiac one as well which went for the same price. And then it was nearly time for photo ops so I went off to join the queue. Photo ops were being done in a side room so we had to queue all down the corridor. I was next to a lovely lady called Janet who was deaf – had fun with her, she was worried about her hair looking nice! – and 3 younger girls in the queue behind who were very excited too. Everyone was brushing their hair and checking their face and putting on perfume (because it was hot waiting in the corridor and we were going to see James so it was even hotter! ) and those coming out all had these daft grins on their faces. It was lovely when you got in the door and could finally see James. He was sat down this time. Everyone was looking all shaky and nervous beforehand – and even more wobbly afterwards! (The steward at the head of the queue looked the spitting image of John Cleese which made me laugh! ;D) Watched Janet do her pictures – James seemed to be in a good mood but much quieter than last time (we thought afterwards he might have been a bit nervous about the concert) then it was ME! I decided to have 3 pics today and 3 tomorrow – draw out the experience! So James nearly knocks me out with that killer smile and shakes my hand (saw one girl earlier hugged him – must remember to ask if I can hug him next time! ) and then he has his arm round me and is hugging me in close – his cheek against mine (but only found that out later when I saw the pic) then he got me to stand in front of him while he hugged me and I didn’t know what to do with my hands – wanted to put one on his knee – but didn’t dare! ;D and then I just turned my head to him and asked if he would do a “bitey” pic to which he said “sure” and the next thing I know, James has grabbed my head and pulled it to one side and his teeth are on my neck and the whole room is laughing. ;D ;D Then Chris the photographer wanted to retake 2 cos he said I blinked. So he did, but it was still all too quick. I thanked James, and got another devastating smile – he really does look at you like at that moment, all he cares about is you. I’m sure there was more than that, but despite my best efforts, James Fog attacked again! I went out with a silly grin on my face to join all the other silly grins…

next bit of report!
Part 2 – Saturday 12th April - cont.
So then it was into the build up to James appearing on stage. They showed a fantastic video montage to introduce him – to “I Touch Myself” (Buffy joke there!) all Spike bits but with these hilarious pop-up facts and statistics that were really funny. Things like (on a clip of Spike running after Buffy) “72% of Americans exercise by running” then “Spike gets 100% of his exercise running after Buffy” – “men think about sex every 7 seconds” and then it kept showing “thinking about sex again” over all the spuffy bits. Also “the tongue is the strongest muscle in the body” with Spike getting the blowjob (we assume!) from the Buffybot! Best of all was the famous ‘Smashed’ bring-the-house-down scene – “chandelier - $975” “curtains - $450” – “new floor - $3000” – “Finally getting it on with your nemesis – priceless!” Great stuff!
And then there was James, bouncing onto the stage, now wearing the white shirt over the grey t shirt and just being his usual gorgeous self. I just started taking pictures like there was no tomorrow – as James never stays still you just have to take pics all the time and about 1in 5 comes out clear, 1 is a complete blur and the other 3 are degrees of ok! I did get a couple of crackers though. Now, I can’t remember all the questions and certainly not the order they came in, but this is what I do remember (im sure other reports will have different memories!)
The obvious question about kissing John B in Torchwood came up – James said he was straight so didn’t like kissing “whiskers” – but John kissed better than some hot actresses according to James. (Side note – as I’m writing this on the plane home, the map on the screen has shown we have just flown over Jamestown!) James told the story about John being very naughty on set and grabbing all the women (as he was being in character) and how James didn’t understand it and thought he couldn’t behave like that. He delightfully described it as John “whacking off on the set” – meaning he was messing about - then realised what he had said – much laughter from us! There was a question about Capt John’s costume – James said about how he saw, liked and just took what he wanted – “like the sword – you’re dead” and then added “But in that jacket, I felt like Michael Jackson” and then did a little MJ impression “I want to touch children” and then he put his hand over his mouth and said he felt guilty – thought he had gone a bit far!
Asked about “the Green River Killer” and playing Ted Bundy and how he didn’t want to hear it when the guys on set said “you look exactly like him” and how it was very hard work emotionally as he is a method actor – would really get to him later on when he was in the hotel room alone.
Then someone asked about whether the Spike movie would ever get made – so James sits down and explains the whole story that he came up with in detail (whilst waving his arms about to illustrate as usual!) about Spike liking a girl and his attempts to hide the fact that he is a vampire from her, but she finds out and is disgusted. Then there’s the whole thing about the new shoes and how he cant steal them cos he is good now, and how he cant kill the owners of the shop, and all the ways he tries to get hold of the money that he hid there a centaury before from a robbery and then he gives up and does the right thing and tells them about the money. They say thank you and don’t give him any of the money – but do give him a pair of new boots – so he loses the girl, but gets the shoes. Believe me, its much funnier when James tells it!!
He was asked about the democratic nominations for the presidential elections, a lot of this went over my head, cos I don’t understand it, but he seemed to make a lot of sense.
Then he was asked how he felt about being in his forties – was it good or did it suck? He said it still rocks! He has more experience and control and “the urge to procreate dies down just a little bit”
One girl came up and said she didn’t know what to ask him, but she just liked to hear him talk. So James tried to prompt her and said “Lets talk about particle physics” and then went off into a whole discourse on science and how every now and then so arrogant scientist will get up and say “we know everything” and then something new is discovered. Its happened a lot through history and will carry on doing so.
James was asked about fame and how he deals with it. Said he never goes to any place where the paparazzi hang out – never goes to the hot spot restaurants and bars, he avoids them – would rather be with people who cared about him.
Dragonball question – the make up was very tight and very uncomfortable – and the first time they did it, it took 17 hours – they got it down to four eventually. And he ended up doing a lot of stunts himself again – jumping off cliffs and stuff – because they couldn’t do the make-up as well on the stuntman, so the director would take one look at the shot and say “get James back in here”. He had a big scratch on the back of one arm (you can see it in one of my pics) and said he had bruises. He talked quite a lot about Piccolo's look and how they wanted to make him more beautiful than he should be, not old and gnarled like he would be after 2000 years in prison, and he managed to get the director to agree to it – so had his own little rebellion. And then said – “I’m going to get into so much trouble for talking about this again – they said I wasn’t allowed to!” but he was laughing
Thats all I can remember, there may well have been more. Decided I would definitely get up and ask a question tomorrow. I took about 150 pics but a few were just ditched straight away as they were just a blur. Did get a couple of crackers though, including a nice one towards the end, when James put his arms above his head (when he is doing that hand in hair thing he does a lot) so his t shirt rode up and revealed a nice bit of tummy…yum! It was great to finally hear him talking live.
So now it was the build up to the concert – I checked my seat out earlier – A16, on the front row just to the left of the stage – excellent. I was getting my free autographs that I was selling to Willie and that took AGES – in fact by the time I was done, it was almost half 8, so I just dashed upstairs and dumped stuff off and then dashed back down again. Luckily it was all running a bit late because of the autographs taking so long, so had time.

Part 3 – Saturday night concert
My seat was great – in the front row. I was sitting next to Becky – otherwise known as Happy Meal who takes the best pictures of James – at least 50% of my screensaver slideshow pics are hers. So I know where hers will be coming from this time!!
James came out without any ceremony- in fact so quickly that we are all scrabbling to get out cameras out! I started taking pics and it’s the same problem – he doesn’t stay still, and also on my side, the mic was either covering his face or throwing a really awkward shadow. Started with “Not a Millionaire” then went into “Looking at You”. Then he sat down (which at least meant he stayed a bit stiller!) and sang “Don’t Worry Son” – he messed up the start of the third verse because the mic was fighting back – it kept slowly sinking southwards and James was trying to follow it! So he did an extra rift and picked it up again, no problem. Straightened the mic out but it was still playing up during “White Hot Girls”. (he said about how it needed the third verse about good girls to complete it) After that, the guy came out to help with the mic “Oh, its that bolt that tightens it” says James!
Next it was “Like a Waterfall” – so great to hear him sing that as its one of the ones I’ve written a dance to. He was supposed to do "London City" according to the set list, but he missed it out and then slipped in “Fall of Night” at this point instead. Then it was “Louise” and James said his hand was giving him trouble, a bit of nerve damage, but nothing a chiropractor couldn’t sort out. (phew! – we worry about him so much don’t we?) “Civilised Man” was up next – that sounds really good live – then “Angel” and “Dangerous” – “All She Wanted” and “Birth of the Blues” At this point , my camera batteries died, which was good timing as James went off briefly. But for some reason, I couldn’t get the camera to work again, so I just stopped and sat back and enjoyed watching him do his last 3 songs – none of which I have heard before (remember – James concert virgin here….!) but the first “ Picture in a Frame” seemed to be unfamiliar to most. He followed up with “Chocolate Jesus” and finished on “Baby Blue”. He couldn’t remember how it went to start with and took two attempts at starting – then had a long think – and didn’t get frustrated - and then went into it fine. And then it was over – despite us all standing up and whooping and hollering for all we were worth. It seemed so short – 14 songs in all, but it felt like about 3. I was all “hang on, you’ve only just got here – sing some more!”
It was great to see him sing live finally – and I was really impressed – he is getting more and more confident with his singing and playing – his voice is improving all the time – I’ve seen the videos of earlier concerts and he sounds so much better now – completely different even because he has got so much better. Again I took about 100 pics, and had to ditch quite a few for being blurry but got some good ones – but then Happy Meal will do so much better. I need to get one of those expanding pole tripod things before the Rift so I don’t shake so much and I might be able to keep up with James!
Stephen beat everyone to the stage and got the set list – though it was a bit of a scramble! Then he let us all photograph it – its hand written on the back of an email from Steve to James with his weekend itinery on it – maybe that’s why he was late on Sunday morning cos he didn’t know where he was supposed to be!.
I was still buzzing after the concert and as I hadn’t had time to eat, I went and had dinner with Anita (Red Sunset) and we were later joined by Sheila and we checked out our photos and tried to wind down. Lovely to be able to talk to other people about James who understand and are as willing to talk about him all the time like me! Finally went to bed about 1 o clock, still buzzing, and hoping that going to bed so late would help me stay asleep!

Sunday 13th April - part 4 No luck with staying asleep – my body insisted on still trying to operate on UK time – so I pinged awake at 3.45 am and didn’t sleep again until 7am. So I texted home and practiced how to word my questions for James today (not well enough it seems – think I should have said it differently and then James might have understood what I meant! Obviously I don’t do my greatest thinking at that time of the morning!) Tried to decide whether to do all my autographs at once – I had 4 of my own plus the banner – or do the banner first and then go round again! Decided to treat myself to another photo op ticket - after all, the $40 I got from Willie almost paid for it! – and just say to James “ go mad” and do different poses. Then I fell asleep until 9.30am – so got up – went across and bought photo ticket (in case they all went!), then had breakfast and then went to beautify myself again! I did have use of a Gold ticket today if I had wanted, Willie had been given one by a friend who couldn’t be there today – but I decided against it in the end – although it was in row C it was right on one end. Would have been good for photos of James answering questions when facing one way, and useless when facing the other way! He was due on stage at 12 noon – and was late of course! Probably got stuck in the traffic. (Or as we suspected – had no idea what time he should be there cos his itinery was on the back of the set list!) I had moved up to the front now by the mic ready to ask my question – I was second on our side. Was sat with Magie and another fan I remember from Manchester and we all knew when James had arrived cos we heard him laugh – very distinctive that laugh! Had another Spike video to introduce him (we need a Capt John or a Brainiac one now) to “Like They Do on the Discovery Channel” – not as good as the day before. – and then there’s James, leaping onto the stage and bouncing about. He was wearing his old faded jeans and boots again, a cream t shirt – and a red and cream Hawaiian shirt over the top, which was a bit of a shock! (everyone must have seen pictures of it by now!) Apparently he did get it in Hawaii, so at least it was genuine and he did look good in it! He started off by saying he was tired, because he hadn’t slept very well – he had gone home over night and his niece had messed around with the air con. First question up was “ what makes him cry?” because the questioner said that him doing the toast in PSILY always made her cry, it was so emotional. To tell the truth, I can’t remember his answer, because I was preparing for me to question him. I can’t remember what the question from the other side was either! Then it was me! I said “hello, James, how are you?” hoping he would reply he was good and how was I, so I could say “ All the better for seeing you!” but he didn’t. he thought about it for a pause and then said he was happy, yes, happy today. Then I carefully said “you have a very loyal fan base – I’ve come from England to see you (cue the odd whoop!) and I know I am not alone. You always give everyone time, you are very nice to us – my question is – why?” (I know now that I worded that completely wrong, so James didn’t get what I meant) he was completely stumped for a minute and then thought about it and said “ I don’t know – probably because I like you!” he then went onto say he had a lot of intelligent and interesting fans – and also he had some completely crazed ones too – but that was fine, because he is a bit crazy too . Not – he did the finger at head swirl – the international sign for “cracked” – but enough. And Happy Meal got a picture of him doing it – www.jaded-paradise.net/lights/details.php?image_id=1722So then I said – “I have another question. Torchwood. Capt John. (much whooping and cheering from the audience!)Will he be back in series 3?”, to which he answered “if they ask me – yes!” (more cheering!) So I said in amazed tones “they haven’t asked you yet??” and he said no, but if they did – he would definitely be back. So now I know what to ask the writers at the Rift! So I said thank you and went back to my seat and started taking pictures again. Next up was Magie who asked “what made him laugh, really lose it?” and again – I cannot remember what he said! James was asked about what other accents he could do and he gave us a lovely demo of his Russian accent – its very good ( I had a Russian taxi driver the next day and he sounded just like that!) asked if Spike and Angel were hanging off a cliff and Xander could only save one – which would he save, James said “Spike, because he’s much smaller – much easier to pull up – Angel is a big guy!” and then went into a discussion about Xander probably not wanting to save either of them! Then “ who would win in a fight between Spike and Brainiac?” – James said he would want spike to win, but as Brainiac is indestructible and unstoppable, he would win unless Spike could think of something sneaky! He was asked if he would do an acoustic album next, as a lot of his fans would like it (much cheering from us) and he said he would, when the current one had made enough money! (hmm - Steve talking???) He had a “great conversation” with one fan who said she didn’t want to ask the question at the Rift next week as she didn’t dare – she didn’t like Capt John (much booing!) and they got into a good debate – James didn’t defend John, as he thought she had a very valid point – after all, he is a bad guy, being thoroughly bad and unrepentantly evil, so in theory you shouldn’t like him she said she hadn’t seen the last episode yet and john was going to have to do a lot to redeem himself (lets hope she is brought round by Exit Wounds!) James said it was the best conversation he’d had in ages. Asked about how he felt the whole Spike dying at the end of Buffy and then being reincarnated in Angel. He thought the end of Buffy was all about the Potentials, so it did kind of cheapen spikes sacrifice – it could have been handled better – and the fact that it was let out before then that he was going to be on Angel was a pity – he thought it would have worked really well if it had been kept a complete secret and then suddenly – there is Spike back again. He told the “Should have punched the preacher” story about smashing his hand again cos not everyone had heard it. Finished on a question very like yesterdays – about kissing John B – again - he gave a similar answer, that he was straight, but if he had to kiss John all day – he would do it. Then he told about his girlfriend watching them film the kiss and thinking it was really hot – it was a fantasy of hers. So they would do a take and then the crew would turn to Patricia and ask “was that hot?” and James did an impression of her standing there with her mouth open, going “yeah, that’s hot. Do it again!” I got some good pics – he was sat down for a while this time which made it easier and the nice Star Trek lady let me sit in the aisle again. So then I sat and talked to various people I’d met over the weekend whilst we waited for autograph time. I went and got my three pictures from yesterday. One – James looks gorgeous – and I’ve got my eyes shut (Argh! Must learn how to not blink when having picture taken!) Another one, James still looks gorgeous and I look ok – its when I didn’t know what to do with my hands. I’m still so fat and wobbly with double chin and great big fat arms – I’m getting on that cross trainer when I get home!! The “bitey” pic is great (despite my chin) and its best viewed sideways, so James is on top so to speak! But I was a bit disappointed, and spoke to Chris the photographer and he said he would retake one later - so in fact I would get five pictures with James! Squee!

And here is the final part... Part 5 Then it was autograph time again – and as I had the banner, I got to go to the front of the queue (well 4th actually!) Stephen was behind me with the set list to be signed. So I got to James very quickly and what a lovely sight it was! I gave him his present (Union Jack socks!) but he said he wouldn’t wear them on tour over here because he learnt long ago that if he let other people dress him, before he knew it, he’d be wearing a salmon pink jumper! (this from the man in the red Hawaiian shirt…) (Note to self:- don’t get him anything to wear – unless I got him a salmon pink jumper – but would he think that was funny??? It’s a thought!) He signed my banner first – right in the middle, good and big and said he was always paranoid about messing up the J on the big ones. I had four pics for him to sign – two Capt. John, one Professor Fine and one from the PSILY premier. (that Stephen said I outbid him for on eBay!) James remarked on the PSILY one because he couldn’t remember when it was taken, so I told him. He said he was depressed that day because he got screwed over on that film, with a lot of his scenes being cut and not getting any of his own input. Both me and Stephen were assuring him that we thought he looked a million dollars that night! He commented that I had some good pictures – where did I get them? - eBay mostly! - and also commented on the Smallville pic that that was when they were trying to straighten his hair – told him I much preferred his curls and he agreed! Oh and his teeth are fine now – his dentist filled in the missing ones. I shook hands again and thanked him and got another devastating smile. How did I manage to talk to him normally when he is looking at me like that? How did my knees hold me up?? All that time, chatting away and grinning at me – he’s just so pretty close up. – photos, not even the good ones do him justice when you see him for real. That smile. That voice. Those eyes – you could drown quite easily. ….. oo, Mrs Big Pile of Goo again! They were auctioning again and the identical banner to mine went for that same price – I almost bid on the Brainiac one as well, but decided I don’t have enough walls, so didn’t. And so we got to the last bit of James for the weekend. At least it is less than 2 weeks before I see him again. I went and queued up after I had taken the banner upstairs, and felt much more relaxed because I knew it was going to be good .I met more people in the queue – long time devotees and veterans of conventions. I was more towards the front this time, so was in the room quite quickly. James had put the Hawaiian shirt back on over the t shirt for the photographs – and I was thanking the gods I was wearing black! People had some really different photos done – one guy had a replica gun and got James to hold it to his head for the shot. I saw the result and it actually looked good! And then it was my turn again. I lost my nerve and didn’t ask for a hug although other people did. Got another handshake and a smile – and then James fog kinda hit – I seem to be okay with autographs and fogged with the photos! I got a very cuddly pic, then I got to stand behind him with my arms round (and got to feel his tummy muscles again! ) and then on the other side – and as James moved me across; he said something like – and I wish I could remember his exact words as its been bugging me ever since, because it makes it different depending on what he said – “ this is not about sex, its about friendship” or maybe “ I don’t mean this as sex, its about friendship”. I’m really worried that I did something to upset him. I didn’t touch him anywhere I shouldn’t – not intentionally anyway (oh God – just thought – I didn’t put my hands too low when I had my arms round him from behind did I? (though Im pretty sure I would remember that!! ) Doesn’t look like it from photo - God, I hope not!) he did seem more jokey and chatty today so I hope it wasn’t something I did – so I was a bit tense for the next pic and then James got me to do the “Dragonball” pose when you both punch the camera – had to be shown how to get it right by James – it was quite funny. I did say thank you afterwards and got yet another devastating smile, so hopefully it wasn’t anything I did wrong. I’ve been worrying about it ever since – I don’t want him mad at me or remembering me for all the wrong reasons. I swear I didn’t do anything! Got the pics back later – another one with eyes shut (MUST take lessons!) Very cuddly one is great, other cuddly one is good; and the one from behind, I look good and James is doing a Spike face (though it would be more convincing if he wasn’t wearing the Hawaiian shirt!) and the punch one is ok – though I should have been looking fierce, not grinning like an idiot (fat arms!! I’m straight on that cross trainer when I get home) –wonder if I can lose another 2 stone by June for Fangoria? So that was it – all the James for this weekend. It was great, wonderful – so good to see him in concert finally, and so lovely to talk to him again and hear him talk. Can’t wait for the Rift, the London concerts and Collectormania! Things To Remember For Next Time I See James:- Don’t give James things to wear Buy a camera tripod and try out different settings Wear long sleeves for photo ops Take spot concealer! Things to Remember When I Go To Fangoria:- All of the above, and Take travel kettle, teabags and a teaspoon!

Don't be daft, I'm sure there's nothing for you to worry about.
Great reports Rosie.
