Saturday afternoon live update from Toronto, Canadian Sci-Fi Expo
Hello everyone, it's me again. Having a wonderful time, enjoying my time with my family and others, too!
This morning I lined-up for the Photo Session which began about 11:15am; VIP Line, first; then Gold. The volunteer staff is friendly and helpful and the morning went by well and quickly. I did it...my first photo session with James, just mind-blowing! The man is so kind, offered his hand for me to shake and gave me a warm, "Good Morning/Hello". La-la-land not too far away...he's so "huggable" (pictures ready by 5:30pm). This, I will always remember...
SpikesGurl4Ever - held a spot in the Q&A line for me and my daughter (so we could go out to lunch with hubby). When we returned at 12:30pm; OMG! Lines for VIP and GOLD were separated once again, and only entered Theatre 1 after much congestion by Expo attendees in the corridors who were trying to walk by us as we entered the room. Again, well-worth the wait...James was "on"! Came on stage about 1:15pm (had to wait for the previous event attendees to clear out, first).
Steve Himber is absolutely charming, and appears to be such a delightful person. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed him, he's gracious to audience members, keeping them informed about time pictures would be ready; how the Q&A would be handled; and just set the tone for when he presented James Marsters!
I will post a few questions and answers jotted down...but I have to tell you; we had, AGAIN, the best audience members. The questions were really good ones; fun to hear his answers to...and some of the questions were fun to hear out loud even before the answer came from James! So seeing as you couldn't be here...hope this helps:
in no special order and not verbatim
Yoga Lady was first in line, today! She started off the Q&A with an excellent question which made us laugh before we even heard the answer,"James, you've written a lot of songs about previous relationships, girl friends you've had; have you ever suffered any repercussions from them about the songs you've written about them?" (I'll let YL answer this one when she returns to post...)
Do you have any guiding principles in life? James replies, "do no harm to the world, "leave the camp site as clean as when you came in it", be nice to others, "take care of the babies...you'll have a good death scene if you do."
Remember to express yourself: James pursued art more for himself (painting showed him all the colors in the world around him).
Favorite Movie: Apocalypse Now
Smallville: He calls himself Professor Fine but it's Brainiac who controls him.
For 3 years he was waiting to see a VERB on the script pages of BtVS for Spike...just waiting for "Spike to pick up a bottle of water!" Has a better feel for his role on Smallville; because he has clear objectives...he feels we'll love his Brainiac character even more so than Spike! He commented, "Wait and see, and oh ya, my first scene on Smallville, the camera shoots him from behind you will see a crawl up my butt when I finally do appear..."
Someone asked about his relationship with Steve. James turns to one side and says out loud, "Steve, how long have we been lovers?!" Everyone was laughing, then burst out even louder when Steve opens the conference room door just as James was finishing his comment. Steve had no idea why we were laughing so hard and so long...James made it fun by covering up his mouth rather quickly, then went on to say: he admires Steve and is so happy to have him as his Manager. James went through hell to find Steve and wants it to last...says Steve is a decent honest man, but do not offend him. Steve is able to do deals unheard of through his decency without pissing people off. James has a great deal of respect for him, also.
Someone asked if he would have ever liked to have played another character on BtVS? He said no, not really. Joss picked the people he did for a reason to carry out his vision. Spike was blissfully free (because he was dead) from the self-loathing, self-doubt of the other characters. And, he mentioned, "12 hours after the Show went down, I shaved my blond hair off."
Most embarrassing thing ever happened to him on stage? Discussed the wheel and nudity...said, "Nudity on stage is weird, man. To keep the actor safe, there is a process you go through... (perhaps someone else can elaborate here on this answer, thanks).
Someone mentioned how James has had a diverse career - what has been the most exciting, most feared? His answer to both was Producing. He was responsible for hiring the cast and ultimately got an ulcer because he couldn't get the actors to learn the words quick enough.
What are you teaching your kids, and what are they teaching you? James is teaching his kids to "Love Yourself" and they are teaching him Patience.
Bob Dylan inspires him the most; then Joni Mitchell/Kurt Coban for his (4) chords, not lyrics. James says he is becoming a better songwriter but needs to learn Music Theory, someday.
What does he want to be remembered for as Spike? James replied, "for his real passion".
Do you improvise when acting or did you on BtVS? James replied, "The only line I ever wrote for BtVS wsa "Bite Me!" I had been saying out loud everywhere and whenever...and was able to use it on the Show." Told us that Jane Espenson (sp?) would come over concerned and tired when saying to a flubbed line, something to the effect "...but I spent two hours working on the last bit of that sentence, could you please try it again and get it right this time."
Someone asked about Professor Fine's wardrobe because Spike didn't have one: James got excited and told us he was given Prada shoes, cool distressed jeans and a Black suade coat to wear...told us "Professor Fine is very, very cool, man!" Referred to Spike as being dressed like "Gilligan's Island".
If he could have a walk-on role, what would he choose? James answers 'anything with Martin Scorsessee (sp?) film, anything with Meryl Streep -would've loved to have been in 'Sophie's Choice'. Loved the Deer Hunter movie, "do it Bobby! do it Bobby!" would've loved to have said that line.
Someone said, "Besides Spike's physical attraction, it was his humor which fans also enjoyed about him. Will Professor Fine have a sense of humor?" James answered, "Humor will be part of the Brainiac character." (if someone would care to elaborate here, please do, thanks)
If he could meet or work with 3 people, who would they be? 1) Ghandi (not work with him, does his voice and makes us laugh); 2) Martin Luther King (really admired the man as a leader who never changed his platform, his stance on where he stood about how he felt); 3) Brando (really admired him as an actor from his younger days to his older days, even though the work he played changed dramatically).
Last night at the Concert he wore a Black Shirt unbuttoned, low. Someone asked him, if he was trying to steer away from that why would he show us the goods by wearing a shirt like that? James replied something to the effect his Pimp Shirt (given to him by stunt man Steve Tartalia (sp?) brought it back from Europe; cost $2,000 and told James he needed to dress like a Rock Star; James teases us by wearing it, just like a woman does when she wears a bikini (you'd rather see her in a bikini then naked; with the shirt, that's as far as he's going with it).
A young man approached the microphone and wanted to ask the Actor's Workshop Questions in rapid order. Now I didn't write down the questions, will do my best to outline them here
Favorite word: Exhultation
Word you dislike: hate
Favorite sound: a happy baby
Worst sound: anything mechanical
Favorite _______: Life...the female side of it.
Worst ________: Blindness, ignorance; people who choose to be blind to the world around them.
Favorite job other than what you do for work: Musician
Worst job you'd have to do for work: Insurance Sales
Favorite word: f**k.
What would you like God to say at the Pearly Gates when you arrive? "I know you tried, bro!"
This was my favorite back-and-forth rapid fire question and answer...it was hilarious seeing and hearing the two of them get through this.
Hope you enjoyed my update...perhaps some other members will come on and read this and will kindly elaborate where I happened to place my pen and paper down...and drifted off to James-land, only getting parts of this and that from questions and answers. But I know what it's like to be home waiting to hear something, so this ends my recap for the Q&A.
James was pleasant, fun and looked delicious as usual. He has fun teasing each side of the audience by shaking his bottom so each side feels appreciated by him as he stands and faces in different direction from time-to-time. The audience was always ready to clap, yell, hoot, hollar, whistle and laugh along to his words and gestures. Yes, the man was born to entertain!
Signing off for now...
