Butcher Praises Dresden Files
Fantasy author Jim Butcher told SCI FI Wire that he's pleased with The Dresden Files, the SCI FI Channel's upcoming movie adaptation of his wizard detective novel series.
"I saw the clips [of the movie] and thought my jaw was going to fall off my skull," Butcher said in an interview. "I'm very pleased with how well [screenwriters] Robert [Hewitt Wolfe] and Hans [Beimler] get the whole wizard detective concept, and I liked the movie script very much."
Paul Blackthorne (24) stars as Chicago-based wizard and detective Harry Dresden in The Dresden Files, from executive producers Wolfe (Andromeda), Beimler (Profiler), Nicolas Cage, Norm Golightly and Morgan Gendel.
Based on Butcher's best-selling series of novels, The Dresden Files tells the story of Dresden, a Chicago-based private detective and the only wizard listed in the Chicago yellow pages. Where others see typical crimes of assault, kidnapping and murder, Dresden sees otherworldly forces at work.
Butcher said that he optioned his books to Gendel, a producer and writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Now, Butcher said, "I am in regular contact with Robert Wolfe, the show's producer, who has been great about letting me suggest things here and there and about asking for my thoughts on things."
Butcher added that he plans to visit the movie set in Toronto. If the movie, a pilot, becomes a series, will Butcher write any episodes? "Not if I want to meet my book deadlines," he said. "If the show goes on and on for seasons and seasons, maybe I'll try to write an episode. But outside of that, I'll probably just focus on my job and let the screenplay writers do theirs." The Dresden Files will premiere on SCI FI in the summer of 2006.Sci-FiAnd SciFi has created a page for the Dresden Files HERE

Is this gonna be a proper film then at the pictures, not just on DVD? I'm looking forward to seeing this, though I shall prolly be imagining how James would have managed the role. I hope it does marvellously, but not too marvellously or I'll be feeling James has missed out.

No, it's a movie length pilot for what they hope to turn into a series on the US Sci-Fi channel.

I only just read that article. I should get out more. I like the way he mentions James. That's a turn-up for the books, that actor being a Brit and having to do an Yank accent, flipside to James as Spike. If they make more audio CDs will James still be reading them or that new peep?

I have moved Marilyn's adventures at DragonCon, as she thought I might ;D I guess this is where I would write about Jim Butcher? If not PK, you can scrape it up with a spatula and flip it to the right spot, lol! I missed JB on Saturday, but was able to catch his hour long talk on Sunday. The room was PACKED, about a hundred chairs, and people lining the walls and the entire back area was filled with people content to stand....it was great! He was very gratified to see everyone, saying that only a couple of years ago he was happy to meet and greet a much smaller amount of readers. There were alot of men there, too, which shows you Harry's appeal to all! A new Harry is coming out in March, a new Codex in December (I haven't read those yet). The Harry series is in the process of being made and should be on fairly soon. Who is playing Harry?? I don't know, somehow I missed that answer, duh me! (I'm sure it's at one of the Harry sites.) Toronto is being used for Chicago, which I think we already knew, cos the money goes further. He answers all questions very charmingly and is still very down to earth and readily admits when he just doesn't know something.... I really enjoyed it! I also met a newish author, Rosemary Laurey, (really sweet, and loves Sookie Stackhouse, too!)...she writes vampire books...the first two are Kiss Me Forever and Love me Forever, and I'm saving them for the airport wait and plane ride on Friday! I'll let you know what I think when I've finished them!!

I don't know if he said it to everyone at this session, Marilyn, or to someone in particular, but Jim apparently did make it clear that James was the one who got the interest going in making the books into a movie/series (bigging them and Jim up to Morgan doodah). It's so long ago now that even JM fans might have forgotten that, so it's nice that Jim still acnowledges it

I have, I have.... ;D I saw a very short promo earlier in the week, it was gone before I even realized what I was seeing, but there was a long one yesterday....seems like something I'd watch anyway, has the potential to be sexy and intriguing....I didn't recognize the guy playing Harry, but he's not bad looking, for sure...Jan 19 is the day.... Oh, it's Paul Blackthorne, who played Stephen Saunders on 24...I don't watch 24....

I've seen it a few times actually. But I'm ignoring it cause I'm upset its not our James! *Wah*
It was funny, too, cause J saw it and said to me, wait is that . . . no, it's not. I'm like, is that who? He said, I thought it was Spike. I said, it should have been!!
