I know we have a number of artists on the board, and although this thread started out celebrating my faves, let's broaden it out. The old cliche, I don't know much about art but I know what I like, was written for me. And I would be hard-pressed to tell anyone why I love the Pre-Raphaelite painters so much. I am so not a romantic, and yet many paintings seem to deal with romantic themes.... or is it the mythic, stuff of legends aspect to much of the work that appeals to me? Probably. And the almost photographic detail in many painters' work. This is a lovely site for having many many paintings at your fingertips, not to mention artist profiles etc, - www.artmagick.com/

Two of my fave Pre-Raphaelite artists are Waterhouse and Burne-Jones. Here is Waterhouse's famouse "Lady of Shalott", which is actually hanging over my computer desk (well, a poster of it, you understand, lol!) My print is darker than this, greener, and I think more brooding because of it. I love the detail of it, like the embroidery on the coverlet thingie hanging over the side of the boat, and the dripped wax of the candles...

Another Waterhouse - The Magic Circle. I would really love a print of this.... The bleakness of the landscape, the abandoned quality of the woman's hair and face, and the glowing fire...sexy stuff!

This one I just love for its movement and melancholy, and the beautiful blues! I can't remember what it is called, so I call it Waterhouse Blue, LOL!

This Burne-Jones is in my bedroom.... Merlin falling in lurve.... not a good thing as it turns out! I love the expression on his face. Sexual, yet kinda bemused! ;D

I don't know, that last one kinda looks to me like he's thinking ..."I'm fucked again...but don't leave"
All kidding aside, these are exquisitely haunting. I'll have to keep an eye on the site to see more. Thanks for sharing. I love this genre.

I think I'd better make it clear straight off, I didn't take these pics from the site I mentioned in my first post! It was just one I recommended for being pretty comprehensive in its info. I'll try and find a pic of the one I have hanging over my bed, about sleep! Sleep is a wonderful thing! And this is a beautiful painting. "Night With Her Train of Stars and Her Great Gift of Sleep" by Edward R Hughes. *toddles off to look for it* Found it

*the scruffy little art student in the corner waves her hand!!* ive saved that site PK, some gorgeous piccies, im an old fashioned girl and believe art is all about the talent, the ability to capture a likeness or express a persons feelings by useing form and colour....none of this screwed up pieces of paper or chopped up animals shit! one of my fave artists is called Francis bacon, he is a pretty unusual kinda artist, probably not to your taste but his work just amazes me, how his mind works must be amazing.......i know this is kinda OT, but these are a few of his piccies..... www.francis-bacon.cx/self_portraits/self72b.html www.francis-bacon.cx/figures/onthelight.jpgwww.francis-bacon.cx/portraits/dyer/dyerfreud.jpg (all from his official website!

I shall rename the thread Lozz!
I've never been into Bacon (ha!), but he was a fascinating man! So now this is a general art thread, let the discussion broaden out and post your faves if you like.

My personal favourites are Monet, Mucha and Escher - all very different! I love the impressionists anyway, and I like the stylized stuff of Mucha, and the general weirdness of Escher... Wonder if I can find you some interesting sites...? Here's an Escher one... favourite pictures include "Belvedere", "Ascending and Descending", "Concave and Convex" (don't look at it for to long or you'll go dizzy), "Day and Night", "Drawing Hands", "Print Gallery", and "Waterfall". There are other besides, but those come out top...

I got a smashing print at the weekend from the car boot...it's Echo and Narcissus, don't know who it's by though...
I like the impressionists and I marvel at Constable and them. How did they paint like that? Amazing, all the detail.
