The rot set in when I let the internet take over my life, really. Plus I used to do most of my reading in bed on weekend mornings, but it is too uncomfortable to sit up in bed these days and I either lie listening to the radio or trundle downstairs and log on instead! I can't really blame the fic writing as I only do wee things at the moment.

*Sigh* Yes, I'm a net addict too. Trying to figure some way to justify getting one of those mobile things that lets me connect to the net anywhere... It's sad really.
It's probably good I'm a reseach nazi so at least I read books for reference....
I think I will challenge myself to read at least on novel over the holidays.

Yup, me too. I read mostly Spuffy fanfics. Sometimes even my own... how sad is that?!

Saw a few mentions about ´The Davinci Code´on the main thread, I picked up a copy at a book exchange in Cuenca a few weeks ago, it took me just over 24 hours to read it! I loved the pace of it and was chuffed that I was able to break the Newton code before they did ;D This is not a masterpiece or anything but it´s a damn good read, especially when you´re doing a 16 hour bus ride!

I'm currently reading "Running with Scissors" by Augustus somebody-or-other (my memory for names is not at it's best on a Friday afternoon!) and it's really fascinating. It was with great reluctance that I finally put it down last night and went to sleep, and I'm actually feeling resentful of having to spend time with my bf tonight cos I wanna finish the book!! lol It's the memoirs of a boy brought up by his insane mother and eventually sent to live with her psychiatrist, who also turns out to be mentally . A bit like "A Child Called It" only with a big side order of humour that makes it seem like even when things were bad for the kid, they were still kind of funny in a warped way, even to him. The reviews are all raves and I can see why. It's different to what I would usually read (I found it in a charity shop yesterday when I was hunting for good sci-fi's) but I'd definitely recommend it just cos it's intriguing. Also, "The Magic Toyshop" by Angela Carter is pretty good...there are no real conclusions reached but it follows her usual pattern of odd characters and pubescent symbolism. Not the best she's written, but worth a look anyway.

Guys- you HAVE to read "Ella Minnow Pea"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the most original novel I've ever read- the idea is that it is a series of letters being sent between Ella, her cousin Tassie and various other characters from a town called Nollop. Gradually, their council makes it illegal to use the letters of the alphabet, one by one, either in speech or writing. Anyone who breaks the rules gets publicly flogged and eventually banished. Eventually they are left only able to use LMNO and P, which of course causes huge problems in the writing of the letters which make up the novel. It's fascinating to see how the writer handles the written word under such a stringent set of rules and yet still manages to produce an engaging story and keep the interest of the reader.

So, Sarek got wind of this really cool musical called Wicked. He checked the CD out from the library, and I have to admit it didn't turn me on at first. But, the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. It's about the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Then, I found out it was a book, so I'm reading the eBook version right now. It's called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
It portrays her as an activist for Animal rights and the Wizard as an evil tyrant. It's pretty cool. I'm finding I need to read all the Oz books now so I can get the backstory. ;D

Good Lord...I didn't know there was a book about my Ma -In -Law out there ;D Wow Lily, that sounds like a very original novel *writes title down* I've just finished Dean Koontz's reworking of Frankenstein ...Book 1 'The Prodigal Son'..excellent, he never fails to disappoint ;D Same can't be said of Patricia Cornwells latest Scarpetta book 'Trace' I'm finding it heavy going and disjointed Kathy Reichs however is going fromstrength to strength...Monday Mourning was terrific, and I'm looking forward to the T.V serialisations with DB ...I know, sad but true LOL

I just finished the third in a series which starts with "Dhampir", by Barb Hendee. It's about a girl and elf who make their livings pretending to be vampire killers, and turns out she is really one....sounds duh, but if you like vampires, and light easy reads, these are pretty good. (I can't go to sleep without reading something, lol)

Hmm, that musical sounds interesting...We've just started to do musicals again at the Theatre, so if it's good maybe we could do that one. Certainly sounds original!!!

For Stephen King readers, this was in his latest newsletter: Amazon.com is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a series of events including a Hall of Fame which features an excerpt from a novel in progress (the working title is currently Cell). We do not have a publication date for this new novel at this time, but you can read the excerpt titled “The Pulse” here

*hangs out the bunting* I finished The Da Vinci Code, 5 1/2 months ahead of schedule ;D This in itself says something about the book, surely. I found it very readable, despite mentally editing and rewriting some paragraphs as I went along - Dan was a bit sloppy in parts. But I thought the pacing was great, and the scenes jumped between characters well. He was preaching to the converted with me, with some of the subject material. I think my views on religious institutions and hierarchies and their rewriting of history and their attitudes to women are pretty well known to most people who know me . I was suprised, though, that although I wanted all the details on places and art etc that he gave, some of it wasn't all that well blended in - almost like he was pasting in from a guide book at times, tsk. But on the other hand, I thought he explained the mathematics very very well, for a non-logical, non-mathematical person like me. All in all a right rollicking read and entertaining, if lacking some polish, and fizzling out a wee bit at the end. If people now want to sneer at it, diss it, as part of the backlash against the book's success well, that's up to them. Dan's laughing all the way to the bank. And he's raised some interesting ideas along the way.

Ditto...you'd be able to read James Patterson...his chapters are rarely more than a couple of pages long , and the stories whizz along ;D I've just finished his last Alex Cross book London Bridges ...excellent, although the ending was a bit weak I can rattle through one of his books in about 4 or 5 hours ;D Also finished Dean Koontz' second installment of Frankenstein, a retelling of the old story ( M was reading the same thing when she was over here ) Brilliant ;D...DK is a fave of mine, always has been ...he really is a master storyteller .

I haven't read anything of Dean's for a few years.. well, you know how my reading record has been. I used to think his endings let him down, a bit weak. But he improved enormously over the years.
