FORUM REGISTRATION, LOG-IN AND OTHER TIPS « Thread Started on Jun 7, 2005, 9:26pm »
Since our upgrade there have been a few changes to the way yuo register, options for logging in, and the way you can use the forum. So I thought it was about time to update this HELP thread
Registering and logging in
When registering you may specify your desired password instead of receiving a random password via email. You will receive an email with an activation code that you must use to activate your account.
When a user accesses a page which requires that they be logged in, instead of giving an error message it will display a login box so that the user may login and continue.
If someone attempts to login to an account more than 10 times unsuccessfully within a 10 minute period, that user will be banned from the forum for a period of an hour.
You will be able to get your password reminder sent to you just by entering your email address -- you won't need to remember your username.
I login fine, but when I click a link it logs me out!
Your browser is not accepting cookies properly. First check to make sure you have cookies enabled. Also, in Internet Explorer 6 you need to make sure that you have 3rd Party Cookies enabled.
Here's how:
Click on tools on the menubar on your browser Click on Internet Options on the drop menu On the window that pops up, click on the privacy tab Put the arrow and track so that the arrow is on low Click ok
This will enable third party cookies:
Click on tools on the menubar on your browser Click on Internet Options on the drop menu On the window that pops up, click on the security tab Click on the custom button On the little window that pops up, scroll down to where it says cookies, and make sure the radio button is in the enabled position Click save
***
You also can opt to stay logged in for a varying amounts of time; this includes being able to opt for staying logged in "Forever". This means that you won't have to always enter your name and password when you visit the forum.
Profiles
Signatures will be displayed on the view profile page
When a user's email address is changed -- by either an admin, or the user -- a new randomly generated password is sent and emailed to that user.
You can choose if you want to see people's signatures when reading threads
You can opt to not display avatars when reading threads
Birthday will become a required field in the profile. As we do not allow users under the age of 13, an age check will be in place which will remove accounts of users under this age.
Clicking on "profile" at the top will allow you to view your profile. An option to edit your profile will be on that page.
Bookmarks We are introducing a new system to replace the notifications system. Using the bookmarks system, you will be able to bookmark different threads and have quick access to them from your profile screen.
For each bookmark, you can specify whether you would like to receive a PM, an email, or receive no notification when a new post is made in the thread that is bookmarked.
You will only receive notification that a thread has been updated one time until you view the thread again. This means that if 10 people post before you get back to a thread, you still only get notified once. Once you view the thread, you may then receive notifications again. An option will be available to set what your default notification action should be for threads you bookmark. For example, you can set your default action to be to PM you. Then any time you bookmark a thread in the future, it will automatically set that bookmark to notify you by PM of any updates.

Yes, that's right. I don't vet membership, so there's no delay on that score. Usually the problem is the activation email is languishing in your junk mail.

Hey Marilyn! I saw you as logged in at the bottom of the board a while ago, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you post. Great to hear from you though!

Somebody help I'm trapped in this board. Everytime I click over to the prattle board it goes back to "hello guest, please log in" This is the only place it will let me post.

Help I can't get into the prattle board. I login fine, then when I try to go into the "off topic" board it logs me off. I stay logged on at all the other boards. I just posted a message here like this one, but I don't see it anywhere, so I can only hope this one goes through

Yup, it's showing up fine, and I see you got into Prattle in the end. When you log in, don't forget to opt to stay logged in for a decent length of time. I'm logged in "forever" and don't have any problems.

We have just undergone a forum upgrade.
There are a few new features, although most only apply to admin. However, you might be interested in:
Character limit in posts and personal messages has been in been increased from 25,000 to 60,000 characters.
Calendar entries displayed at the bottom of the page are now in date order
Ability to add a poll to an existing thread
Ability to request a forgotten password by email address has been restored
And apart from the threads in the Smallville section inexplicably havng been duplicated (which I've now rectified) and the Last Post info not showing up in sections that haven't been posted in since the upgrade, all seems to be working okay.

Apologies to any guests with queries, or members who have difficulties logging in and want to leave a cry for help here - I've had to make this section logged-in members only for posting (like the rest of the forum) because of the frequent spamming.
Check out my profile for my email addy if you need some help.
