I'd been sticking my fingers in my ears and going la-la-la about this, hoping it would prove to be one of my weird dreams I was watching an awful alien bug movie on Sky 3 last weekend and thinking 'oh noes, James's thing could be even worse because of the cowboys!'
Anyway:
SciFi won’t greenlight a sequel to “The Lost Room,” but it’s just greenlit three more of the 36 TV-movies it’ll air next year. They are:
* “Sand Serpents”: Giant lizards snack on American servicemen in Afghanistan.
* “Alien Western”: 1890s cowboys battle extraterrestrials.
* “Carney”: A sideshow attraction escapes to terrorize the East Coast during the Great Depression.
Ain't It Cool News
Sci Fi, RHI ink pact for five telefilms Deal includes project starring Jason Gedrick By Kimberly Nordyke
Oct 9, 2008, 01:00 AM ET Sci Fi Channel has inked a deal with RHI Entertainment for five original movies, including an Afghanistan-set telefilm starring Jason Gedrick.
The license agreement includes basic cable rights for the U.S. TV premieres of five new horror and thriller projects. Production is set to begin shortly in Romania on three of the movies:
-- "Sand Serpents," starring Gedrick, follows American combat soldiers in the Afghan desert who battle the Taliban and a horde of giant carnivorous serpents.
-- "Alien Western" is set in an Old West town in the 1890s where monstrous buglike machines from another world attack.
-- "Carney," based on the Jersey Devil legend, where a fiendish carnival side-show attraction escapes and terrorizes a Depression-era Mid-Atlantic town.
Also part of the deal are two previously announced movies: "Hellhounds," directed by Ricky Schroder, and "Rise of the Gargoyle," starring Eric Balfour. Those two just wrapped production on location in Romania.
The two-hour movies are produced for RHI by Muse Entertainment. Muse's Michael Prupas exec produces with RHI's Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr. RHI also will distribute the titles in key territories worldwide and will be at MIPCOM this month in Cannes.
For RHI, this marks the company's fourth multipicture deal with Sci Fi in the past 12 months. RHI also produced Sci Fi's record-breaking miniseries "Tin Man."
"Last season, we did a third of all of Sci Fi's movies," Halmi Jr. said. "What sets our product apart is that we spend more money so that we can get a better cast and have better production values onscreen."
Sci Fi senior vp programming and original movies Thomas Vitale said the telefilms will premiere in mid- to late 2009, airing during the "Most Dangerous Night of Television" weekend franchise.
"RHI has such a great track record in the genre," Vitale said. "The (weekend franchise) features movies are that are fun, escapist entertainment, and these movies are a perfect fit for that brand."
Sci Fi in the summer added Sunday nights to the "Most Dangerous" franchise. It said its original movies are showing growth among households and total viewers.

And we may as well have the full blurb from Muse:
11.21.2008 Alien Western, a sci-fi television film about giant, vicious, alien bugs that come to earth to gorge themselves on the uranium deposits found in the ground of an Old West town, began principal photography this week in Romania starring James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Smallville) as Sam Danville, an outlaw who is about to be hanged when the aliens land. Sam leads a small group of survivors who fight the creatures.
The frightening story is written by Richard Beattie (Cold Comfort; Almost Heaven) and directed by KT Donaldson (Pursued; Anna's Storm). Muse Entertainment and Media Pro are producing the picture for the SCI FI Channel in the U.S. and Super Channel in Canada. Cindy Sampson (Swamp Devil; A Christmas Choir) takes on the role of the nurse Abigail and the hero's love interest. Sebastian Knapp (Beyond the Rave; Sand Serpents) is Jules, the scientist who discovered the uranium mine that attracted the alien invaders. Sanny Van Heteren (The Last Word; Inside Out) plays Rose, a fast-talking, fast-shooting bounty hunter and Antony Byrne (Straightheads; Doctors) plays Gus, a fellow prisoner of Sam's who has his own designs on the uranium ore. "Alien Western will put you in your seat and keep you there for 2 hours. Forget the days of the 'good guy getting his gal'. The real question in this film is who, or should I say what, will get the good guy? The authentic feel of the old west combined with outstanding visual effects will definitely twist any preconceived idea of the western genre," says Producer Ric Nish (Durham County; Swamp Devil). The director of photography of this CGI-and-special-effects-laden extravaganza is Pierre Jodoin (Flood; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), the production designer is Guy Lalande (The Deal) and the editor is Simon Webb (Tales from the Neverending Story). Muse Entertainment's Michael Prupas (Human Trafficking) is executive producer along with Irene Litinsky (The Last Templar), RHI Entertainment's Robert Halmi, Sr. (Tin Man) and Robert Halmi, Jr (Flash Gordon). RHI Entertainment is the international distributor.

I just want to know if the giant, vicious alien bugs will have antennae and googly eyes. They'll be a bugger to lasso if so...

Men about to be hanged don't usually wear cowboy hats and chaps so he'll have to take time out from fighting/evading giant vicious alien bugs to go a-thieving some

James Marsters Saddles Up For Alien Western
By Meredith Woerner, 7:00 AM on Mon Nov 24 2008
Genre workhorse James Masters is getting back into harness one more time. Our beloved vampire and gay time traveler will be killing big fat alien bugs out West amongst the coyotes and dirt roads in a new Sci Fi Channel original movie. Marsters plays an outlaw who escapes death thanks to some dangerous aliens, but mostly the whole business seems like an excuse to have the awesomeness of Spike in a cowboy hat. Details and spoilers below.
According to Muse Entertainment the movie is described as as:
Alien Western, a sci-fi television film about giant, vicious, alien bugs that come to earth to gorge themselves on the uranium deposits found in the ground of an Old West town, began principal photography this week in Romania starring James Marsters as Sam Danville, an outlaw who is about to be hanged when the aliens land.
Sounds like a Tremors rip, which is fine by me. You can't have enough scifi Westerns, especially when you get old cult character actors involved (yes sorry he will always be Spike to me).

Ive snagged this link from Grey Sunrise over at MTS, because it is undoubtably hilarious!
The writer gives a breakdown on the plotlines and characters of any SciFi Movie Channel original
http://www.badassoftheweek.com/scifi.html (warning - adult language)
Have to laugh (or I might cry - but mostly from laughing my off!!) but I'm sure James will make something out of it. There has to be a reason he went for the part.

Article about James's nursie Abigail (Cindy Sampson) in the Chronicle Herald, although they say she's a doc
Sampson has just wrapped an as-yet-untitled project which stars Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) filmed on the same $30 million set as the Oscar-winning feature Cold Mountain.
The made-for-TV movie is set in 1890. She plays a doctor at a small-town infirmary and the love of her life returns to town and gets caught by the sheriff. The day he’s to be hanged aliens show up.
