Yup, on the face of it this sounds like the most interesting project he's had since... well, Torchwood, but I'm biased ;D (I would say TCotGRK as well, but that was teeny).

Info on the 'movie' from Here

ITV confirmed as co-producer on factual drama MOON SHOT

With the factual drama MOON SHOT, Dangerous Films have secured their first ITV1 commission. Controller of Popular Factual, Jo Clinton-Davis has confirmed the UK broadcaster will join partners ProSieben and TF1.

Drawing on the pioneering special effects techniques and lavish production values of 9/11: THE TWIN TOWERS and D-DAY 9.9.1944, the feature-length programme celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Moon landing. The special uses powerful reconstruction written by award-winning writer Tony Basgallop, state of the art CGI, incisive interviews, breath-taking HD archive, and an established relationship with NASA.

Dangerous Films’ highly respected track record for landmark event television lends itself perfectly to this project. With a primetime Emmy nomination and Grierson & RTS shortlisting for 9/11: THE TWIN TOWERS, MOON SHOT looks set to be one of the most talked-about specials of 2009.

Synopsis

Man’s landing on the moon was our greatest technological achievement.

For the first time, our species walked on another celestial body. Even more remarkable was their ability to make it back.

This glossy, thrilling and moving docudrama combines stunning space-recreation with breathtaking interviews from those who were there.

In production. Due for transmission 2009.

History Channel has been confirmed as the US partners for the major drama special, MOON SHOT. Head of Creative Content at Dangerous, Richard Dale, said, “The Apollo 11 moon landing is one of America’s greatest triumphs. It is thrilling therefore to have an American partner on board. The History Channel with its excellent reputation in dealing with recent historical events is a perfect home for this project.”

“The History Channel is delighted to join Dangerous Films on this exciting project celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing”, said Susan Werbe, Vice President, Programming, The History Channel. “In 1969, the whole world watched this dramatic and courageous feat. In 2009, we expect the world to watch again as we dazzle viewers with newly enhanced HD images and enlighten viewers as to the inside story of MOON SHOT.”

Mike Kemp, Dangerous Films’ Managing Director, added: “It has been our ambition to partner with History Channel for a long time. It is great news that MOON SHOT has provided the opportunity to bring together our two respected factual brands.”

The special is currently in pre-production, and will shoot in 2008.

James Marsters takes off for ITV's 'Moonshot'
In negotiations to play Buzz Aldrin
By Leslie Simmons and Mimi Turner

May 23, 2008, 01:00 AM

James Marsters is heading to the moon.

The actor is in final negotiations to play astronaut Buzz Aldrin in "Moonshot" for Britain's ITV.

The 90-minute telefilm tells the story of the July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 moon landing, beginning 11 days before the launch, and follows Aldrin and fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. ITV plans to air the movie in the U.K. in July 2009 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the mission.

Principal photography is set to begin June 3 in Lithuania.

The series was commissioned by ITV popular factual head Jo Clinton-Davies and produced by Dangerous Films, the creator of "Inside the Twin Towers." The estimated $5 million telefilm is being co-produced with a number of partners including the History Channel, ProSieben, TG1 and NTV Japan.

Marsters is best known for his role as Spike on the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." He recently completed filming "Dragonball," Fox's live-action adaptation of the manga franchise. Marsters also has had recurring roles on "Smallville" and the BBC America series "Torchwood."

Marsters is repped by Himber Entertainment, the Kohner Agency and, in the U.K., Amanda Howard & Associates.

Leslie Simmons reported from Los Angeles; Mimi Turner reported from London.

Marsters ready to join ITV's 'Moon Shot'
Friday, May 23 2008, 10:13 BST

By Dave West, Media Correspondent

Buffy star James Marsters is in final negotiations to play Buzz Aldrin in a big-budget telling of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

ITV1 is lining up made-for-TV movie Moon Shot to air in July next year - the 40th anniversary month of the historic mission.

The budget for the project is estimated at $5m (£2.5m).

Fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins have yet to be cast but producers have promised "big American" names.

Moon Shot will take up the Apollo 11 story 11 days before launch and combine NASA footage, CGI and live action.

Marsters, who played Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, also had a recurring role in the recent series of Torchwood.

Hee, oh DeeDee ;D

But what is it with all these reports saying he's in negotiations for the role - JM's crew never announces anything until it's a done deal ??? Here's another one:

James Marsters Takes One Giant Leap to the Moon

Buffy alum James Marsters is dotting I's and crossing T's on a deal to play astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the British TV movie Moonshot.

The movie's July 2009 airing will coincide with the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's moon landing — piloted by astronauts Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins.

THR.com says the telepic's budget is in the $5 million neighborhood and is being co-produced by, among others, Britain's ITV, The History Channel and NTV Japan. — J.R. Whalen

Mind you, these articles do always have a tendency to repeat themselves, so if the first one out of the blocks says it, they all do.

Spike Gets His (Moon) Shot At A Leading Role

He's played an undead Englishman, a time-traveling dandy highwayman and an evil alien supercomputer made flesh, but if rumors are to be believed, James Marsters' next role will see him play a regular human, but not one more down to Earth. Yes, dear readers, next year, it may very well be the case that James Marsters is astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

Marsters is apparently in talks with the UK's ITV network for an upcoming project called Moon Shot that will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. The made-for-TV movie - which promises unnamed "big American" actors to play Neil Armstrong and forgotten third astronaut Michael Collins - will recreate the last 11 days before the launch of the Apollo 11 mission that changed the world, using a mixture of NASA footage, CGI effects and Marsters' unusual transatlantic accent.

The movie is scheduled to premiere in the UK in July 2009

I'm thinking it really has to be cast right now with it due to start filming in June, which is just days away. Dangerous Films sure aren't giving anything away about the actors, though.

Yeah I do. I really like Andrew Lincoln (Egg in This Life; also in the first series or two of C4's Teachers; also in Love, Actually; and does a bit of voiceover and doc narrating). Also Anna Maxwell Martin was great as Esther in the sublime Bleak House (where of course she had quite a lot of scenes with Burn's Mr Guppy).

Oh, and Andrew was in the Brit rip off of Medium - Afterlife. Only watched one as I couldn't stand the bleakness, nor the leading lady. But he's a good actor, and quite cute (especially when wearing glasses, but I'm a sucker for cute guys in glasses)

Not many Americans in this, huh?
